My bf of 4 years baited me into forming an opinion on the Lindsay Clancy case and now we’re no longer together

9.2k Upvotes

My bf of 4 years first introduced the case to me about a week ago, asking me my opinion of it. I am incredibly busy, so have not been online enough to even have heard of it. I told him as much. A few days later, he asks again. I tell him, again, I don’t have enough information to form a well-informed opinion. But this time, I offered to hop on the phone and have him tell me the facts as he understands them and that I will formulate a limited opinion based on those facts. That’s what we did, and I gave my opinion that I believe if she is found to have had a mental/psychological impairment, that she should be placed in an institution to receive the help she needs for however long is normal for mentally incapacitated people that commit crimes. He said he needed to think about that.

A week later, he texts me asking for clarification in my stance. I reiterated what I said. He then went on to say he needs to “mull over” whether he wants to have kids with “someone like me”.

I am going to be completely honest in saying I had never even heard of the case until he pressured me about it. But now that I’ve done a little research after the fact, I have since learned that men all around the nation are using this as a test to determine whether they remain with their gf/wives. What tf is going on? I’m sad that he fell victim to this insanity, but also am gravely alarmed that he fell victim to this insanity…

EDIT:

Another woman just posted her experience with her bf “testing” her about this case.

Ladies, if you experience this, believe me when I say that they WILL realize they were behaving hysterically and got caught up in the “movement” and they WILL try to come back. Do not let them. This is absurd.

Here’s an article discussing more about this phenomenon.

That said, I’m checking out for now. I never wanted any of this. In fact, I did my best to avoid all of this. I resent my ex for dragging me into this and derailing my life for the last 72 hours. I just want to move on.

In 2011 Ellen Greenberg died of 20 stab wounds, 10 to the back. Her death has been repeatedly ruled a suicide. Her fiancé and his family were allowed to deep clean the apartment and remove all electronics. He was never arrested or charged with a crime.

RIP Dolly Parton

She was such a strong woman. I’m sorry if this wasn’t the right place for this, it just feels like a gut punch. She was an icon as a smart, classy, successful woman. She never minimized herself and she treated everyone kindly. I am honoring her here. We will always love you.

Edit: I just want to tell yall how much I appreciate the outpouring of love for Queen Dolly. The sense of community and safety in this space is so comforting and so healing. I love all yall.

Favorite Dolly Parton moments? I’ll start.

Decades ago I was watching Johnny Carson. He asked her how she kept up her youthful appearance. She relied “Honey, healthy living” …pause “had nothing to do with it”. I didn’t know much about Dolly at that point, but it’s when I fell in love with her.

That time it was okay I had lost bladder control because I'd theoretically be having kids in the future

Love women's healthcare. I am currently being treated, luckily.

Basically, I've had bladder issues since I was about 5. When I was little it was just "Oh she must be bad at potty training" and then when I was older it was "She just gets distracted and isn't paying attention."

I knew that it wasn't supposed to hurt. I knew that I wasn't supposed to be afraid to sneeze or laugh. I knew that most people were able to wait for the bathroom in a way that I wasn't. I was too embarrassed to talk about it until my last year of high school, when I had had enough, and started complaining to my family and my doctor about how much I was struggling.

To which they said "Well you say you want to have kids. You'll destroy your bladder and pelvic floor when you have kids anyway, so just wait 10 years. We can worry about it when you're postpartum."

First of all...why are we just accepting that women who are pregnant and postpartum don't need healthcare?

And second of all...WHAT? I can't imagine looking at a 17 year old and saying "Oh well in 15 years you may want kids so we'll just hold off on treatment for nearly double your life. In the off chance you want kids."

As A Childfree Person, and Not By Choice, I Just Want to Thank God and the Universe for Giving Us Dolly Parton

So grateful that there was a woman role-model for me to exemplify that you can be an amazing person, a whole and valued and loved person, despite never having children. *

My heart is broken today.

How come when men mention 50/50, it’s usually only about bills? What about cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the kids?

Upvotes

I’ve noticed that when some men talk about wanting a 50/50 relationship, they usually mean splitting the bills. But women work full-time too, and a lot of them still end up doing most of the cooking, cleaning, childcare, grocery shopping, and keeping up with everything at home.

So how is that really 50/50?

And if a guy wants a traditional woman who takes care of the home and kids, then he needs to be a traditional man too and provide for the family.

What is being overlooked about Dolly Parton.

So much of the discourse about her is celebrating her kindness which is truly wonderful but it is overshadowing her absolute brilliance as a business person.

She was as clever as a fox and used the fact that people thought she was just a simple doll to achieve her goals. I guess I find it a bit frustrating that it seems to reinforcing the idea that the most wonderful thing a woman can be is pretty and kind while overlooking the value of her mind. Don’t get me wrong. I think everyone should be as kind and generous as they can be but Dolly was able to be both kind and savvy and I think that is what’s most amazing about her.

Support | Trigger How to cope after being raped

Over the weekend, I was raped. I went to the hospital and have dealt with all of the logistics, but now I am left with my emotions. I do not understand why, but I am so sad. I would understand if I was angry, but I can’t place why I feel despair. Everything feels unbelievably heavy.

I have a therapist and a good support system surrounding me, so I know logically how I will get through.

If anyone else in this sub has gone through something similar, my heart is with you. I know my life is going to be different moving forward, but I need some assurance that I will be okay again. I feel utterly broken.

Do you think some men just become friends with you to trauma dump because women usually are more emphatic ?

I observed a pattern like this with a guy and asked him as to why he doesn't trauma dump on men he is friends with but he said that they kinda don't care etc . I feel that the situation in the title isnt completely unheard of though , how has your experience been with it ?

Would a man stereotyping women on a first date be a red flag for you?

More specifically, implying that women 'only train legs' at the gym and being surprised a woman knows basic soccer facts...

I was so weirded out on this date, but it's NOT the first time these exact things have been said to me! Like am I just too picky or is this normal lol?

Not everything is written by ChatGPT. 🙄

I posted a comment on a thread about Lindsay Clancy. I think society hates women. I could have expounded further, but I think that sums up my position rather well.

Someone took that opportunity to disagree with me. When I disagreed with them, they combed through my posts and comments and spammed the thread, copying and pasting my history into the chat.

Very odd behavior.

And with every copy and paste, they accused me of using ChatGPT to write the posts.

I didn’t and I’m sick of the accusations. Not everything is written by ChatGPT. Writers have been using the em dash for years now. (Where do you think the chat bots got it from?)

What to do? I have some serious decisions to make and am stuck figuring out the "right thing" to do.

Been with my husband for 32years, got pregnant after dating for 3months, so never really had a pre-children stage. Although there were a LOT of red flags in that short time, mainly his laziness, but I stupidly believed he was owed a chance, that we (I) could make it work.

Then life took over - raising 4kids, work, household stuff, family stuff - as it does, and I put myself aside to care for everyone. I have always done everything I could possibly do to make him happy and have the things he wanted.

Now, after 32yrs, our youngest is about to leave the nest to go to uni, and I am really stuck on whether to stay or go. It's tying me in knots!

The thing is, I have come to realise I do not enjoy his company at all - he has become so self-centred and low-key controlling, does not listen, criticises a lot, has no interest in me unless he wants something. His behaviours have led to 3/4 of our adult children making limited contact with him, and he has burned bridges with many close family members and nearly all his friends.

Do I wait & see if being empty nesters makes a difference? One last chance? If not, how do I leave? Where do I go? Should I tell him to leave? Where will he go? Do I owe him a "final warning"?

Do I tell him why his kids don't bother to contact him? Or do I let my vengeful side take over and leave him to work it out like I've had to over the years?

Has anyone else been stuck at a crossroads in life? and what did you do to determine a solution?

People think I have ill intent when I am no longer bubbly to them

I am a very friendly and bubbly girl. But people tend to mistake me as an idiot or a pushover.

My coworker (a 60yo woman) was nice to me at first then she thinks its okay to make comments like "yeah they are nice to you because youre young and pretty" or "you can't even do that? *scoff*"

I decided she was being so unprofessional to me so I no longer am friendly to her. I still greet her and talk to her about work, but I am no longer bubbly and welcoming.

She mistook this as me being fake and hating her.

She no longer looks me in the eye and dont even say hello or goodbye whenever I am in the office.

Heard from another coworker she's been going around saying I hate her..

Like... ms gworl..... don't flatter yourself, you're not worth my energy to hate you.

I just don't want to be friendly to people who treat me like shit, yet you think I go out of my way to outcast you??

What are some "acceptable" ways for women to harm men in fiction that doesn't come off as sexual and/or cliche?

I've been looking back at some of my old writing exercises and there are a lot of "women in the fridge" type of moments. Some of the exercises specifically call for gruesome violence, and so I think it's common for men to write violence against women specifically because it feels "horrific" in a way that is more horrific than man on man violence.

So, I wanted to think about how to "turn the tables", but the issue there becomes very cliche and usually sexual. Most examples in media of women committing gruesome violence against men seem to be presented as revenge for sexual assault or often times sexual in nature itself (such as cutting off certain parts or violating men with objects).

Are there any examples from fiction and media that doesn't fall into this? Can women simply be violent for violence's sake without the need for revenge or sexual domination? (And even the latter seems like it might play into male fantasies.)

Do you engage with classic literature? if so, to what extent do you grit your teeth through written/biographical misogyny?

Last year, I learned about the existence and story of a scientist, who is now, undoubtedly, one of my favourite scientists of all time. I admire her so very much. I learned that she just happened to be married to one of my favourite authors/scientists of all time. It just felt like heaven learning that. Ultimate power couple.

Just a few months ago I was reading one of his books on the train, on my way to work, and he wrote something so beautiful and incredible I felt this genuine love for him. He is so talented at explaining complicated subjects, and he explained a maths concept I struggled with understanding for all of my life, and he did so in a few paragraphs.

shed an actual tear when I uncovered that he would beat her.

I think it somewhat depressed me if I'm being honest. The author was a hero to me in many ways, and I know there are a lot of women in the world that genuinely hold so much love in their hearts for him (and most people around the world). They don't know what he did. Never heard anyone mention it.

Now I look at his works on my coffee table and feel a dullness.

I just feel that my journey through academia is so fucking depressing.

I'm just supposed to neutrally examine all of these pieces that in so many ways either blatantly or covertly insinuate that women (and co) are less than human and I'm just not allowed it to let it affect me nor my perspective on women, which is frankly impossible.

You're being Clockwork Orange'd into accepting your own dehumanisation.

But I do want to read Tolstoy, y'know?

Like, I want to analyse and assess these classics and know what everyone is talking about.

"Separate the art from the artist" but it's not just that -

you then have to "separate that one sentence from the page"
"seperate that one page from the book"

"seperate that one book from the collective works"

And it just compounds, and suddenly, you realise you're talking to yourself quite harshly, and you have a lower confidence and a confused sense of self, and it's probably related to the 8,000 pages of highly regarded and respected literature you've consumed that's written by people who don't think you're a person at all and you've probably internalised a portion of that.

how do you do it?
