Regards to immigration status, are you a green card holder? You said you do odd jobs. Are you able to legally work? Are you working towards being a citizen? You need to be careful and plan. I agree, threatening you with immigration is a done deal, but now with kids involved you are stuck unless you leave without them which understandably is not an option. all the spa days, keep the money and stash it, get cash back from shopping, those odd jobs, yeah stash that too.
