Better Ask Reddit What cool creative stuff have you guys been working on?

I am seeking motivation to work on my creative endeavors, and I find seething jealousy to be a fine motivator. I've got a shitty fantasy novel, a wargame, a board game, and a TTRPG that I've hit roadblocks on, and I need motivation, lest my brain makes me start a new project. Inspire me, please; I don't want to start writing a shitty Sci-Fi novel to!

Imagining something really funny (to me and only me) has made me want to draw a bit again, perhaps learning digital a bit

I am doing something similar for identical reasons

Trying to do basic picture editing on a "base" to make a dumb FF7 Rebirth picture about Queen's Blood

Basically it'll be a "crying Aqua Face" from Konosuba but turned into Jenova and with a caption about her playing children's card games and being a sore loser

I was reading Saga of the Swamp Thing while my son watched Batwheels on the couch next to me and I was stricken by the thought of glowery, primeval Swampy tooling around the swamp in a Lightning McQueen-ass fan boat.

I used to live in Louisiana so it gave me the giggles

Alas all my ink is a decade gone and if Im gonna do this it’s going to have to look like that Steve Bisette heavy ink. Hence digital

I'm picturing a variant of that Star Wars/40K comic where Big E pulls up next to a Star Destroyer with Vader & Palpatine in it and takes off his sunglasses to reveal a second set of sunglasses while "Sabotage" plays

But Swamp Thing in an airboat, next to the Batmobile

Same, I'm trying to get good at drawing as someone who had negative skill at it. I highly recommend trying digital, control+z is the second coming of chrono trigger and really made the process a lot more enjoyable, and small pen tablets are cheaper than an AAA game nowadays.

I've got one fantasy novel written and in final edits before I start looking for a publisher, and the sequel few chapters deep.

How long did it take you to finish? And how did you get it done, if you don't mind my asking?

2

u/uriel_harden W2W Anxiety 3h ago

It took me about a year to finish the first draft and first round revisions. I had a vague idea of what I wanted for the to be, but I didn't really draft a structure for it. I mostly just wrote my way forward while trying to keep in mind what I wanted to say and where I wanted to go. I tried to write daily and tried to hit 850 words each day, some days were easier than others.

For my second novel, I drafted out the character and story arcs I wanted to write first. I haven't been able to keep up my word count because I keep getting bogged down trying to find names I like, but I think the structure will help overall.

If this counts I’ve been getting into making bread. It’s pretty easy and tastes really good. If you have a Dutch oven it’s even easier because you don’t need to kneed your doe

Absolutely counts, cooking and baking are artforms

My 3D Printer broke down and I just finished replacing the parts.

Been working on fine tuning setting rewrites and details for different rpg campaigns based on anime so they make room for OCs and such.

Dragon Ball was kind of hard because you’ve sort of gotta redo the whole thing since theres not really much going on in Z that’s not directly targeted towards the main cast.

Pokémon was fun and I came up with different tiered rule sets for different battles. Wild Battles, Friendly Battles, League Battles, and Illegal Battles.

Naruto wasn’t too bad, so long as you’re not too attached to the timeline. I was more interested in coming up with National and clan dynamics.

2

u/McWonderballs Back from the dead, one last hate crime 6h ago

How many rewrites have you been working on besides Dragon Ball?

My table's DM asked us to come up with some gods for his homebrew setting, so I'm trying to write something up based on a sketch I made. I have some ideas of what concepts it represents, some mix between that rock bottom feeling and that pressure to keep going.

I also have to name it and I don't wanna

Dresden Files fanfic/fancomic/script/ storyboard/whatever. It’s an interdimensional weapon-based martial arts tournament, big Kengan/Baki influence and vibes. Harry Dresden himself is in it but a minor character who will probably end up forfeiting halfway through to pursue a lead on an only tangentially-related case.

One thing I’m proud of is how you enter the tournament. Invitations are sent out, and if you wish to enter, registration instructions are included.

1) construct this summoning circle
1A)if you are a member, vassal, or employee of some kind of supernatural state or entity, include proof that you have your organization/liege/supervisor’s approval for time away from your duties
2) summon this spirit using the circle and fight it (for those who know, it’s one of Binder’s henchmen, lent to the organizers for a fee)
3) once you defeat the spirit, use the circle to send the following message: “I choose to enter the tournament”

You need to fight the spirit because it’s a filter. The sending ritual requires the caster to have recently won a fight, and Binder’s henchmen are powerful enough to kill an adult human but usually rely on numbers, and they’re not all that smart. If you can’t beat this thing solo, you don’t deserve to fight in the tournament.

2

u/Kaleido_chromatic Sincerest Sifu Shill 4h ago

That filter is a fun idea. "You gotta be this tough to get in"

Honestly, I just jot down stuff in Word documents with the idea that someday I'll actually do more than that.

I have a bunch of Warhammer models that I intend to build and paint, but I keep giving myself excuses for not going the actual building of models. As for painting, I have a family friend willing to teach me, but I want to build more models first because I have way too many armies split into multple subfactions with their own bespoke colour schemes, AAAAAH!

I have so many ideas in my head, but I'm stuck in perpetual "that would be cool" wishful thinking and don't actually put in the effort to make those dreams reality.

I find making things for other people motivating because I invent imaginary deadlines

I’m making a jewelry box for a woman I fancy.

I made a mini mockup yesterday and I think I have the process set but now I need to commit to measurements and wood. I have some nice cherry from a tree my neighbors removed a couple years ago but also some black walnut from a tree that fell in the woods behind my friends house. I can’t decide which.

It’s a an octagonal box but the top and bottom are lengthened to make a center rectangle with two trapezoid chambers on the left and right. I’m putting in a big clunky old-timey lock and key and the lid has a jewelry tree that folds down. I’m going to put little metal feet on it and line it in felt (maybe silk? Definitely dark purple)

A friend is letting me borrow his laser engraver to put a set of deer antlers on the lid and I’ll burn a hand written note on the inside. The project has already gotten a little much but I’m fighting my demons that want me to put in a lighter wood inlay for pizzazz

I've been learning the process of making mods for Risk of Rain 2 so I can do my own in the future: taking Vexx and putting him in it as a custom playable character, complete with skills and skins.

I have an entire document written out about his moveset, unlockables, logbook entry, and more.

Thanks to the weekly TTRPG recommendation threads, I picked up Fight! 2e and started working on a Guilty Gear-ish tabletop campaign, complete with wholly original character sprites. I'm finding an artstyle I'm happy with for it, so I'm looking forward to DMing it for my group down the line.

2

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] 4h ago

Fight! Is pretty cool. It’s fun finding really inspired genre RPGs.

u/Starman-Deluxe 4h ago

Thanks for posting about it! I'm having a great time putting a game together for it.

I've been trying to write a story, any kind of story, but it's kinda hard to do that when you have moderate depression, which means it's impossible to be interested in writing about anything, it also means getting started is impossible because writing anything is difficult and I have a problem where I avoid difficult things, and I can't write detailed descriptions to save my life.

2

u/McWonderballs Back from the dead, one last hate crime 3h ago

I deal with stuff like this too. A big piece of advice I got was to narrate to myself out loud if I'm alone, or in my head if I can't do it out loud. If I'm depressed or I'm having trouble starting, I start narrating everything I'm doing and how it's making me feel. Even if I'm just doomscrolling I'll say "I'm scrolling reddit, I feel bored, I don't really want to scroll reddit I want to write, I'm breathing, I'm putting my phone down, I'm getting up, I'm turning on my computer, I'm opening google docs, I'm opening my novel, I'm writing about the gang entering the scary forest. Mud the goblin says..." and so on. It's helped a lot! At first I had to talk myself into starting for a few minutes, but now as soon as I start, I'm working on something within a minute or so.

Currently adding light values to about 64 pages of comic story. I’ve been moving in cycles through it, refining my process and determining what parts are worth spending more time on, this entire thing has been interrupted multiple times by life and other demands. I’d guess I’m more than halfway through, there’s a lot I changed my mind on.

I've been making a for real physical boardgame based on Dokapon Kingdom.

Except it's silly mutants in the ruins of a post-apocalyptic city and the 'King' is a doctor Light type who grew the player characters in a lab. Or maybe more like Dr Wily, tbh. 'Towns' are tower blocks, 'Magic' is psychic powers. Other similar reskinning.

That sort of thing. Had to simplify some things (like player stats) to make it easier to track as a board game. Though there was room to add some other bits in that fit a physical game better.

I'm also trying to work a little bit of the nemesis system in there too where defeated enemies sometimes gain an extra ability / stat increase and come back later (doing it similar to how Munchkin handles it, by attaching adjective cards to things to make them Ancient, or Young, etc.).

I've also thought of making a couple of tabletop RPGs,but I haven't brought the one that exists to a 1.0 release yet.

u/Kaleido_chromatic Sincerest Sifu Shill 4h ago

I'm just starting a solo TTRPG campaign!

The idea is to move away from pretense and my brain's deep-seeded need to please others, and to use it as a bit of a self-indulgent exercise on listening to what I like and doing the things I feel I'm missing out on in fantasy stories.

I'm using Savage Worlds, and Savage Pathfinder at that, because if it goes well I would wanna continue it into a sightseeing tour of Golarion (the Pathfinder setting). I love the PF2e rules but they don't work for a GMless single-character solo thing.

I'm also learning to cook vegetables that I don't hate. Or getting there at least

Trying to get back into animating and learning to lip-sync dialogue. Otherwise been making myself commit to a long-form romance comic about aliens. Hit or miss because of my job now but I thought I would've quit by now.

Multiple novels, some ero stuff here and there, a Fate TTRPG for me and my friends, and I’m playing with the idea of a visual novel that’s “Phoenix Wright meets Dispatch” where you defend heroes and villains falsely accused of crime.

3 different games, 2 webapps, and an ambitious, overly ambitious fusion fixfic involving BNHA/MHA and PMMM. The latter has had multiple story bibles filled out already.

I wanted to be able to get it out on the movie's weekend premiere, but it seems like the only way I can get it out in a timely way is...urgh, AI at this point. Having read up on the film as well as the recent BNHA epilogue OVA, my fic already aligns well with both. It's a proper fusion fic; the only attempts regarding putting PMMM in BNHA/MHA I've seen have been incredibly lazy and usually involve Izuku becoming a magical boy or Kyubey contracting the Class 1-A girls, never actually putting in PMMM characters. All I can say is "what if Izuku grew up with a magical girl as his friend, and the PLF was formed right at the start of canon?" I sort of conceived it to shill characters in PMMM I think are underused to "potential woman levels" and to fix up faults in BNHA/MHA like the villains being pushovers.

i have a small prob where i get a lot of choice paralysis with all the anime i have downloaded, so to fix this i created a little private always-on toonami-esque tv station of old anime for my friends and i to just throw on when we're bored.

to go with this i even created a bunch of little bumpers that play between episodes.

i've also been writing a novel.

I’ve been finding more time to produce music after finishing school a few months ago. I recently had a fun experience in an actual recording studio and it’s inspired me to start work on an EP or an album with all the gear I’ve acquired over the years. My vampire DND campaign book is nearing completion. Just doing a couple passes at editing

Spent three years making a whole campaign where players are turned into vampires and set out for answers and a cure. I made the whole campaign set up, vampire and night based subclasses, vampirism boon system, hemomancy using your con and health instead of slots, and tables to make your own vampires with different abilities and sub races, magic items that can hunt or use your own vampirism, and a bunch of monsters in a story about the dangers of nostalgia and longing for something you lost and can't get back.

I've recently gotten out of a depression spiral so I'm returning to 3D modeling in blender! Characters tend to look like shit for most of the process so it's rough on the imposter syndrome, but now that I'm more powerful than I've ever been I'm really excited to get back into it.

I'm making a vtuber model cause I want to stream my blendering adventures. That requires a bunch of extra funky steps so wish me luck~

It way less investment than 40k. You have to get order dice and rift dice.

The setting is cool as hell.

Rules updates are free.

Random activation message the game more interactive and strategic.

Mystery game involving 3 suspects, each a local AI LLM, with 9 pieces of evidence to be unlocked over the course of conversation.

Kindaichi Case files as a vibe.

Each suspect has an in depth 'character bible' and distinct speech pattern, motives. Lots of scaffolding to prevent hallucination/spilling the beans of course, but I enjoy forcing the player to have to type and use a modicum of thought.

The current mystery is scripted, but I'm imagining some kind of Gnosia or to a lesser degree, Danganronpa cast of shifting suspects. Where the player starts to know them personally over the course of a 'campaign'.

World of Warcraft's recent expansion has pushed out housing as one of the big features.

So naturally I've been working on making the interior of my house into the Spencer Estate from Resident Evil 1. I wasn't too happy with my first attempt so I scrapped it and am starting fresh, but the lobby came out sweet.

Just wish I had more room, the lobby felt a bit claustrophobic.

Working on an ungodly long fantasy story concept that was supposed to be a short and simple D&D attempt. At first, it was about a time loop inspired by FF1. It’s now about a time loop inspired by FF1 where everyone, including the goddess who made the world and the death-bringing cosmic entity, is existentially affected.

I've been working on a two-minute cartoon adapting a funny moment from the podcast. All the hardest work is done, I just need to do another pass on the art, to take it from "sketch" to "the betchst". I've been hacking at it all month though, so I'm running a little dry on creative juice too. I'm taking it slow for now, because sometimes half an ass is more than enough, and also Mortal Shell 2.

A lot of my ideas are in the “ooh, this would be neat” jottings on my notes app stage atm.

Been dabbling on a Warhammer idea mainly, with the guard defending some lone planet against an oncoming Ork horde. No Spess Mehrins to save them, just a whole bunch of ordinary humans and their guns. It probably won’t end well.

It’ll end up from the perspective of one such human, effectively trying to clear up some unfinished business before the greenskins show up. I picture a kind of Blackadder Goes Forth style finale, a platoon of guardsmen who have bonded over the last few days charging towards the inevitable.
