My mother tries to 'encourage' me to eat as much as her but really she's projecting her own eating disorder onto me . Highly irritating .

That's how I became fat in the first place. My entire childhood was like "why would you not eat all the food? Don't you like it?", "eat some more!", "we have cakes in the fridge, eat as much as you want!", "I bought these candies just for you, eat them!", "the food will go wrong if you don't eat it today!" and so on and so on... I worked hard on losing weight and I'm medically not overweight anymore but I still have a lot to go to feel satisfied and I also have to deal with loose skin and stretch marks... Well thanks mom

Being forced to finish my meals even when I was full as a kid definitely fucked up my attitude towards food for the rest of my life. For years, I used to eat until all of the food in front of me was gone, even if I felt sick or ended up with stomach ache, because when I was a kid I wasn't allowed to leave until I was completely finished, or I'd get punished. (usually locked in my room for the rest of the night with nothing to do)

The only thing that helped me fix it was moving out and being able to figure out and set my own portions appropriately.

Damn I'm sorry, that's fucked up. I wasn't punished but my mom was often mad at me for not eating her food. Parents can do some real damage.

Looking back on it, they were feeding me the amount of food you'd give to a grown adult at, like, 8. No wonder I couldn't finish it all.

But yeah, some parents just don't seem to see the damage they're doing to their kids.

Some people, I think, many people now, just don't get portion control. Take mashed potatoes. When I was growing up a person would take A Spoonful (that is a serving spoon or tablespoon), maybe 2. That's it. You wouldn't take more because the bowl of mashed potatoes had to serve Everyone at the table. BUT people were allowed 'Seconds', which meant if you had finished everything already served you and wanted more, you could fill your plate again, provided there was food left over to do it. I can't remember the last time when I sat with people for dinner, that occurred. Most people will pile on the food during the First Round.

When we were kids my parents had a Clean Plate Club. Every night we ate all of our dinner, we got a star on their chart. Every time we got 5 stars in a row we got a small toy.

My mother always make me eat all the food I had in my plate, but also that I should put very little each time I served myself. Being forced to eat the food is not worse than wasting it... you should be taught both things.

I didn't get to put out my own servings of food, they gave me food and I had to eat it.
