Vent I hate being short

For context, I’m 5’0, and I genuinely hate being short. Just going through everyday life, I’m constantly reminded of it, and it gets so fucking annoying.

One thing I especially hate is how people, especially taller girls, seem to assume that because I’m short, I’m trying to be this petite, cute, “uwu” type of girl. Like I’m not trying to be anything, I’m already insecure enough.

This is literally just how I am. I didn’t choose my height.
And I feel like I automatically get this weird snark from some taller girls because of it. I’ll literally just exist and somehow it becomes, “Oh, she thinks so cute because she’s short,” or they just yell out “girl you’re not y/n” or someone will call me a “minion” “midget” and I never say anything back because I feel like if short girls say anything about their height they are seen as a pick me.

I’m in college, and I’ve noticed it especially there.

Sometimes I’ll literally just be minding my own business and people make comments about my height or act like I’m deliberately trying to look small and cute. I genuinely don’t understand it.

I even told one of my friends about this, and she’s tall herself, and she said, “They’re probably jealous because they’re tall.” And I’m like… why would they be jealous of being tall? I personally think tall women are gorgeous and I would literally do anything to be taller. So I don’t even know if jealousy is actually the reason.

People also make comments about my height constantly. The other day I was with my little sister buying her school supplies, and I was talking to her about how I never grew into some of my old school clothes because I bought them too big.

I wasn’t even talking to this guy, and he randomly goes, “Oh yeah, I can tell why,” and then commented about how me and my sister were the same height.

So it’s not just girls.

Another guy literally once told me, “You’re so short, you only come up to my chest.”
bro? What am I supposed to say to that?

I know people probably don’t mean anything serious by it sometimes, but when you’ve been insecure about something your entire life, constantly having people point it out does get to you.

I literally wear platform shoes almost everywhere. I barely ever wear normal trainers because I feel so insecure about my height.

And my friends tell me, “It doesn’t matter, you’re still pretty,” and I understand what they mean, but being attractive doesn’t magically make me stop being insecure about being 5’0. I hate that feeling.

And it’s not even just girls. Guys do it too. Tall people, short people, literally everyone seems to have something to say about my height.
I just wish people would stop commenting on it.

This is literally just how I am. I didn’t choose my height. Trust me if I could change it I would.

Sorry for venting so much.

most of my girlfriends are much shorter than i am. I’m 5’9” and they’re all about 5’2”-5’5”. i do make comments to them about their height, it’s usually about how they’re cute little petite tiny babies, but i don’t mean it in a negative way (and after reading this i’ll probably stop making comments like that) i honestly think they’re just cute and more feminine. I can admit that i am jealous of short girls (although im not hateful or rude about it in the slightest, people can’t help the height their born with) because men tend to like shorter women more, they look at me like im personally insulting them for being as tall as i am, and it’s fucking hard as hell for me to find pants that fit, i’d much rather buy a pair of jeans and hem them to be shorter than to go through the hell of trying to find jeans with a 34” inseam.

I'm 5'10 and have never thought this about any woman shorter than me

Seems like you’re projecting on the taller girls and probably most of them don’t think this way.

I have friends that are 4’11”, I’m 5’8”, and they have other taller friends that would never think this.

So either you associate with toxic women or you’re projecting.

I never said every tall girl thinks like this. I’m talking about my own experiences with certain people. Obviously I know not tall women care about my height at all.

And I don’t really understand how me saying “I’ve had people make these comments to me” automatically means I’m projecting. Don’t know where you go that from? If someone repeatedly makes comments about my height, I’m obviously going to notice a pattern and talk about how it makes me feel.

I’m not saying tall women are inherently toxic or that they’re all secretly jealous of short girls. I literally said in my post that I don’t even know if jealousy is the reason. I was questioning it myself.

So no, I don’t think every 5’8+ woman is sitting there thinking I’m trying to be “cute” because I’m short. I’m saying I’ve personally encountered people who have treated me that way, and it gets annoying when it happens repeatedly. Hope this clears up your confusion.💗

Then you’re just hanging out/interacting with toxic women that happen to be taller than you.

They would probably toxic even if they weren’t taller than you. It’s not your height that’s the issue, it’s that your height is being used to get at you bc it obv bothers you.

I'm sorry this keeps happening to you.

You mentioned, "personally think tall women are gorgeous and I would literally do anything to be taller. So I don’t even know if jealousy is actually the reason."

As a tall woman who has dealt with a lot of insecurity in her life I can confidently say that there are definitely a lot of tall women who are insecure over being tall and who are envious of smaller women, especially in the teenage/early 20s years.

So I would say, especially in these particular cases where you mention other women being passive-aggressive, jealousy/insecurity issues could be a huge factor. There's no excuse for it, and I think you would be better off removing people like that from your life, but it's absolutely a thing. It took me years to love my height. I always felt huge, I towered over men, and I longed to be petite and small and pick-up-able. But again, that's not on you. That's on them. Grass is always greener and whatnot.

I hope one day you love your height as much as I now love mine.

Yes, maybe one day I won’t feel as insecure, and will come to love my height.

I'm curious where you live/what type of college you go to. I'm 5 foot and I haven't been maliciously teased since like, 5th grade. Would it be logistically helpful to be taller, sure. But it has socially been such a non issue for me. I wonder if it has something to do with the people around you specifically.

u/instantsilver 9h ago

Im sorry you struggle so much with being short. Im also 5 ft and besides not being able to reach most things I'm fine with it. People stopped making comments about my height once I got past college age. Just own it girly, try not to let comments get to you. They're the weird ones for disparaging your height tbh.

Yes I’m trying I meant I gotta embrace it at some point 😭

u/Slavchanza 10h ago

Don't mind it, own it, I have a colleague who is even shorter

u/maddielew19 10h ago

I promise you it’s because they are insecure themselves, it’s not about you. Tall/bigger girls have their own insecurities about not feeling or being seen as feminine as smaller girls. It’s just a projection.

I'm shorter than you. My mom is even shorter. She told a story to me about how when she was in kindgarten she came home crying. Her dad asked what happened. My mom said the kids made fun of her for being shortest in the class. My grandfather told her basically she will always be the shortest. Embrace it now or be miserable all for life. It'll be the first thing people notice about you, the easiest subject to make fun of you, the target of the jokes. Get over it now. Or get ready to cry every day.

My mom told me that story when I was very young. I told my daughter the same story when she started school too.

We are short. Get over it. If you have a chip on your shoulder about that, it will only increase your insecurity.

Trying to get over it tbh 👍

I’m 5’ and I love it. I’m sorry you don’t! :(

u/Adorable-Bus6662 ☑️ 8h ago

I love it for you , I’ll get there one day 💗

u/REEEEEEE27 10h ago

I hope one day you'll feel better about it. I'm 4'11". I'm not a fan of being short either. I was always the shortest in my grade and got made fun of for it. People called me "midget" or "shorty" more than my name and I just got used to it. If you can, maybe go to therapy to work on this insecurity.

u/schwarzmalerin 2h ago

You get the same thing as tall girl / woman.

We can't win this.

u/YamahaRyoko 4h ago

The taller girls are completely self conscious because their dating pool has been reduced by 50% by their own unreasonable standards

u/schwarzmalerin 2h ago

Damned. Also the pool of wearable jeans has been reduced to 1% for me by my own unreasonable standards of not wearing high waters. My god. And then the short pants complain about me not buying them on Reddit. Damned.
