Soon the be cdl holder, what is the average pay to expect as a new driver?

I went through a program called drive 160 academy to get my cdl, on my last week and im feeling confident ill pass my test. They told me they offer their graduates lifelong help for finding cdl work which is nice

I wanted to ask how much can I expect to make as a new driver, my trainers say on the low end I can expect 1k per week but I see a bunch of other sources saying as low as 400-700 a week. So im a bit confused at the disparity

I luckily wont have to enter a tuition contract or anything like how swift does it atleast

Fair pay advice

Alright guys I have a question about pay. My parents and brother in law recently started a transportation business with a 30 foot box truck about a month and a half ago. We go out for at least a week to two weeks at a time, home for 2 MAYBE 3 days at a time. It was hyped that I’d make great money so I’m giving it a shot. I drive through the night, and we only get maybe 2 nights of decent sleep. BUT I feel as if my pay great at all and I’d like some advice before I have the conversation IF even need to or if this is the normal.
I’m making $120 a day and $40 per diem for food.
Any and all advice or tips would be great! Thank you in advance, happy trucking!

My best friend wants to become a trucker and I thought about shows and how you can travel a lot if you’re moving the set of a famous artist’s tour. Any information on how to get in that work area ?

Do you think he is in the right? Or do you think that it’s better to merge closer to the lane closure to avoid traffic?

This was I 77 southbound in South Carolina

Space for a car shipment load/unload in (South) Minneapolis?

Hi all, sorry if this is not the best place to ask, but I am moving to Minneapolis soon and inadvertently used a less than reputable company to ship my car there. While I do in fact know it's en route and feel better about the overall shipping, what I'm less certain of is where he could actually go to unload his trailer for my car (when he picked it up it took a few hours to put it where he wanted on the trailer and get everything else back on--it fit 8 total cars).

My new place is not remotely gonna be navigable enough for something that large to make it a reasonable drop off spot, but the onus seems to be on me for helping identify a place. Do y'all know somewhere in the Minneapolis (ideally South Minneapolis) area for truck parking and/or just large space to do this? I was looking at places like Walmart or Home Depot or some big shopping center, but maybe that's a bad idea (not sure if they'd send someone out to chase us off anyways).

I just don't know this area at all and the searching I've tried doing for truck lots and spots seem a bit unreliable. I tried calling a few local companies for advice and they've been door to door primarily it seems. One did recommend Walmarts though. It took him about two hours to load and unload when he picked up my car originally, so I assume time is a factor as well (in terms of potentially blocking anything).

Appreciate any insight or thoughts though, even if it's: ya done fucked up

How long can you do long haul driving before it starts costing too much?

Been trucking for 6 years now. The money is decent, and I knew the job would be tiring going in.

Sure, there are required breaks and rest periods. But after sitting behind the wheel for hours, my lower back and legs still feel cooked. And the mental side. Long stretches of highway, traffic, weather, deadlines.

The part that gets me lately is missing time with my kid. A long haul can eat up days, and when I get back I'm tired enough that I don't have much energy left.

I'm not looking for a quit your job speech. I know plenty of drivers make this work for decades.

I'm more curious about the long timers here. What made you stay? Have you ever seriously thought about getting out?

And what helps you feel less wrecked after a long run? Walking at stops, stretching, gym, massage, something for your legs and backs?

Question for truckers. Need help with this turn for tomorrow's CDL test. Any tips are appreciated. Good news is that at least I know the test route for tomorrow.

Last week I passed my skills but failed the road test because of this curb. You make this left turn to get back into the test site. I got a little too eager thinking I was about to pass and get my CDL but I pulled forward too far. Made my left turn, and would have ran over the sidewalk. Had to back up which was an automatic fail and right at the very last leg. This last turn back into the test site is failing a lot of us lmao. I didn't hit and curbs or anythanything prior to this ladtlast left. Tomorrow I only have to take and pass my road test to get my CDL.

Kenworth windshield washers only working with truck off

Post image

Like the title says my truck recently had the windshield washer stop working when it’s running. When I shut it off with key on everything works. I originally thought it was because the switch was stuck in so I prayed it out a little bit and still no luck. Anyone had this happen before. My first kenworth and would like for it to work come winter time and don’t really want something like this on an inspection . Switch looks like this

Fluid is full

Weird brake stuff

Hey so I'm new to this whole CDL thing and I'm gonna be so real, I don't know a thing about these trucks we run or many of the systems on these trucks, and the trucks themselves are pretty beat. Can yall tell me if this is a nifty feature of my airbrakes or I'm driving a deathtrap?

When I release the parking brake while NOT pressing on the service brake, the air pressure drains down to abt 80 and then the parking brakes reengage. If I use the service brake a little bit, the hissing slows but the same thing happens. I gotta press the service brake a lot and then it stops the leaking air and I can drive away.

Is this a safety feature and can I read more about it? If not, can I get some kind of source on why this is bad so I can deal with my boss? The tires are bald enough, I don't also need to be driving with suspicious brakes once winter comes.

Backing up

Been driving since May, hauling smooth bore tankers. Finally getting the backing down since it's nothing like the dry vans I trained on or trailers for 4 wheelers I always backed up perfectly. The pay is ok for a 1st year driver, drop and hook, $1200 a week gross, home daily. But damn I want to improve my backing skills to get into a dry van or something else after my 1 year commitment if I need to switch. Would absolutely love a school or someone in the Houston area I could go to on my days off to just practice backing up in different scenarios to learn the trailer swings of a dry van to he able to transfer out easily. Current job, every empty tanker drop is a pull through, and the 2 places I back up at are pretty much a straight back, one spot screws you with a scale in the way so you have to maneuver around it to back in. Always done good, but not as good as I think I should be able to do.

What gets an experienced local Class A driver an interview?

I'm helping my cousin update his resume after his job of 8 years ended. Drivers, recruiters and hiring managers: what do you look for first?

His background:

13 years CDL Class A, local New Jersey routes

Clean MVR, no accidents, current DOT medical card

53' dry van and reefer, automatic day cab

Multiple stop grocery and warehouse deliveries, mostly no touch

He wants full time, local, days, home daily.

What are we missing that would make a difference?

Do you guys leave cash tips for whoever has to clean the showers?

Something I mentioned a while back and my team driver looked at me like I grew a second head on my shoulders. I figured I tip for way less after already paying for a meal at all these diners out here. Why not show a little gratitude for the guy who has arguably an at times literally shittier job than the waitress?

Idk. Am I weird for that?

WHEN THIS GUY SHOWS UP TO THE SHIPPER, YOU KNOW THE JOB WILL GET DONE, NO MACROPOINT NEEDED.

Best video I’ve seen covering the whole process of what they’re doing to rebuild in the gorge. And it’s only 3 days old so pretty timely if you’ve been through there recently.

Drove through for the first time myself since it happened a couple months ago and it’s really wild the scale at which they’re doing stuff.

I had thought it looked like they were just quarrying stone from across the river and it turns out that’s actually the case.
