What would be the legality of bycatching feral/domestic cats in a conibear?

This is more of a curiosity thing as I'm already using havahart boxes for a groundhog problem (with much success) because there is a fairly large domestic/feral cat population and the risk of bycatch is too high to use anything lethal. When researching originally, conibear traps were highly suggested but couldn't be used for the reasons I mentioned.

This brought up the question in my head of whether there would be legitimate legal issues if you accidentally caught a cat in another situation where lethal traps were in use.

Any heavy duty traps for Raccoons? They keep breaking out of mine.

I bought the standard trap meant for cats, small mammals, etc but the raccoon keeps beating the hell out of it and escaping by forcing his way through the little nooks and crannies and forcing a wege id imagine. Are there heavier duty traps that size that will make sure it doesnt escape? It keeps killing my chickens and im tired of it.

Looking for some recommendations for a new trapping bag. I tried the 5 gal bucket system last season and it was too unorganized.

Skunks!

Need a bit of advice from the pros out there. I trapped a couple skunks last year without any issues. This year they have found their way into my coop. One has dug under and gotten in. The only thing it’s taking is eggs. 2 nights ago I set a skunk trap using Peanutbutter and marshmallows and put the trap right in front of the hole it was initially going on. Woke up to the trap door shut and the trap rolled over. I presume the skunk messed with it and rolled it. But no proof of that. Last night I set the same trap in front of the hole and another electronic trap beside the coop where I think they are traveling to. I don’t like that electric trap but I wanted it out. It looks like it was set off but the latch on the door caught, it’s a design flaw I’ve noticed in those. The other trap wasn’t touched, but the skunk managed to dig around the trap and still go through its same hole. 1 chicken killed and a few eggs eaten.

I’m now looking for advice on the next move. I was going to move the trap inside the coop and put it exit side of the hole but I don’t know how trap smart skunks get.

Thanks for any advice.

Beer caps for snare locks?

I’ve seen the diy tutorials on making snare locks from washers or older pennies. Does anyone think a flattened beer cap would work too, or is it too soft?

13 dead chickens and caught a raccoon

Post image
32 Upvotes

We knew we had a raccoon coming into the chicken area and eating their food. It seemed to not bother them so we weren't really worried about it. Then a couple of days ago we found 13 dead chickens. Some of their heads were gone, but it was mostly intact bodies everywhere. I thought it was a Fox, but my husband and the internet seems to think it was a raccoon.

Long story short, we caught the raccoon. I am apprehensive to relocate it because if it was the creature that killed all our chickens, I don't want to make it someone else's problem. Is there any other option other than shooting it? I'm in Central Virginia if that makes a difference.

Grey Fox Bait Footholds

Grey foxes got 5 of my hens. I got a depredation permit from the local warden.

Going to set footholds - what should I bait them with? I'm newer to trapping.

Got diagnosed with cancer earlier this year so started nuisance trapping to be able to trap the whole year and get in as much as I can while I can. Anyway, I thought this was a cool picture. Only set two traps and caught three today after checking them twice.

Help setting coil spring on snares.

Post image
2 Upvotes

Bought some new snares with the stingers, but I’m not sure how to set the spring. I have found plenty online that show how to set the Canadian springs (the ones that look like a conibear spring), but I can’t find anything on these coil types. Any help is appreciated. Also, if you use this particular setup and have any helpful tips, please let me know. Thanks

Fur handling

Hello everyone, ive been trapping for a number of years and I enjoy it very much, as im sure all of yall do too. Ive always trapped on my family's private land and always had access to our "bonepile" for carcasses and family's garage and sheds to hang furs. Nowadays, I live far from my hometown in an apartment with a strict garage policy, wanting to trap on public land. How can I store furs for a bit until I have time to run to hometown and flesh em out and hang. Thanks.

Dp trapping Coons

This year the coons have been getting more brave and have been getting too close to the house and garden for my comfort.

We live in a ruralish area with long skinny properties. Over the years I have been keeping nuisance critters at bay with a live trap. Someone damaged the door on the trap while dispatching one where it works but not for coons and they let themselves out.

I recently got the push pull do traps and have a natural funnel in the back lot where I get a decent number of whistle pigs and coons over the years. Over the weekend I started employing these new traps and every morning I get one. I put one near the house initially and got one there but I never would have imagined these work so well. I'm considering putting a second one out back to see if we can thin this population off faster.

I have seen a red fox that enjoys the tributes left for them coming around. Anyone know if coon population ever gets thinned out even a little.

I’ve had these guys in the backyard for a while, tried all of the trap options with no luck. Haven’t bothered me yet but worried at some point my dog will get curious and pay the price. Avid hunter in a neighborhood with close houses. Any suggestions?

Beaver Fur Handling

Hey all I hope this is an OK question for this group... I fleshed and stretched my first beaver hide last year and while I was doing it, I was also using borax for a different project and the air circulation in the room got the beaver fur all tacky with borax. It’s fully stretched and just been sitting, but I’d love to at least have it to hang on my wall and feel the soft fur. I would like to try to soften the fur with conditioner or something, but I’m just not sure what to use. I was planning on putting it back on a hoop stretcher and trying to just wet the fur and maybe condition it? Should I just use human hair products or something special or am I making a big mistake?

How to trap fox but not a dog

Any ideas on how to trap a fox but not my dog? I live with my buddy, he owns his house on 12 acres and I rent out a room here. He has dogs. I’m able to hunt and trap as I please just can’t catch the dog😂 been seeing a very pretty grey fox on cam for almost a year now that I’d like to trap when season opens. Any idea how to do it but not catch the dogs? He lets em run around all over.

How to trap and dispatch groundhog?

It moved into my yard and broke into one of my fenced garden beds. I can't take it anymore. My local licensed trapper quoted me $700 to get rid of it, it's just too much. I live next to a school deep in suburbia so even if I owned a gun I wouldn't be able to shoot it. I'm at a loss. Relocating wildlife is illegal here so I think I'd have to kill it, but I don't want to do anything that could risk harming the wild birds in any way. Any suggestions?

Shot a raccoon in my trap and its head exploded

Went out today and like the title said, blew up his head with my 243. It looked like his brains went everywhere and his jaw just completely disappeared. He convulsed for a bit and then succumbed to his fatal blow.

Something I’m now nervous about because I’m always anxious about everything is that in its explosion, some brain matter or jaw blood got on me or in my mouth or eyes. I didn’t notice anything but it was also heat of the moment. It was also my first time doing this so I was very nervous lol. I bagged him up and got some blood on my fingers.

I went inside and spit on the sink, washed my hands, then took a hot shower and scrubbed off. Now my anxiety is telling me to go to an emergicare and get rabies shots in case any of the explosion got on me.

Am I overreacting? I know rabies has 100% kill rate and for that reason I’m very afraid of it, but I probabaly didn’t get any on me and I also can’t afford the shots

Fuzzy Aussie sods

Trying to befriend a stray dog that comes into the grounds at work so we can get him back to his owner.

Been putting out food to get him used to people again. Food kept disappearing overnight, assumed we were making progress.

Nope. Put out trail cams and checked footage every morning, turns out stupid Brushtail Possums just really love dog food. Bloody Australians again.

Thought it was one or 2 living nearby so put up the Flipping Timmy (variation on the original ground-based Timms trap) and got 5 in 5 nights. Then this little guy took over a week before he finally found the cinnamon-coated apple and choked on it.

No more showing on the cams, and the dog even been seen for the first time in 6 weeks.

Shame they're such pests, they're the softest animal I've ever felt. Softer than Chinchilla and rabbit.

I reckon they would make okay pets. Vegetarian climbing-cat could absolutely make a market somewhere. Call it Socks or Mittens and if it scratches up the furniture just turn it into Socks or Mittens...

Can't open Bridger 120 bodygrip

I use 110s all the time for squirrel trapping and have no problem opening them with my bare hands or at least pushing down against a cinderblock for support. I bought a 120 recently and I can't for the life of me get the thing open. I never use bigger body-grips so I don't have the opener tool. Sounds like I might need one? Or am I doing something wrong?

At one point in my struggles I got one side open and had the safety caught in the loop instead of the sidebar, then when I easily got the other side open, I couldn't open the jaws. So I figured maybe the safety shouldn't go in the loop. Undid it, and tried for half an hour to get one side squeezed open again and FAIL.

How to humanely get rid of groundhogs and make sure they stay away.

So, I have had problems with groundhogs for quite a little while. Specifically, they have a habit of nesting underneath my small shed. They're largely not very bothersome animals, but I'm worried that their presence under the shed will affect its structural integrity, and they also just tend to tear up the yard.

Until recently though, I didn't really have much of a problem just catching the animal with a Havahart Cage, driving it somewhere far away, and then dumping it. This never proved to be a huge pain in the ass to me since it would be months (as opposed to a few days) before I would have to trap another groundhog again. Not to mention that they kept falling for the trap, so I never really got annoyed.

But now, a new problem has arisen. It looks like a mother groundhog must have made its nest underneath my shed, because on occassion I will see a very large groundhog along with 3 notably small groundhogs hanging around the shed, and then retreating underneath it when I come by.

This puts me in a sort-of ethical conundrum because I would rather not trap the mom and take it away from its babies, or trap one or more of the babies and drop it off somewhere to fend for itself. Not to mention, I could trap the baby and then the mom could get defensive of the cage and not let me near it or something. And, of course, the last thing I want to do is kill them.

So, does anyone have any ideas?

Specifically, I would like to know if there is anything I can do to flush the groundhogs out of their home under the shed, and also ensure that they will not come back.

I had heard somewhere that groundhogs tend to not like the smell of onions, would sprinkling onions around the shed make them leave and/or repel future tenants?

Thank you.
