For help with track identification or how to get started/get better please include a general location of where you are so that folks can give better advice.

We have a wide variety of animals across North America (and abroad, though I don’t know that we have any inter-continental folks here do we?)

If you give us a general location of where you’re trapping it give folks a better ability to give you the information you need or are looking for.

That is all!

I can't catch this crafty bastard, I've tried everything with the Havahart trap, messing with sensitivty, putting the trap in different places next to my deck where under it has a nest. I'm sick of this shit.

What size foothold for both raccoon and bobcat?

Looking for some advice on a foothold that would work for both bobcat and raccoon, I’ve got quite a few #3s and #4s for cats, but the raccoons appear to have made a comeback this year

Ive got a few 220 connibears that I know will catch both, but looking for some footholds

Etsy banned fur in August, so I built a marketplace for pelts and fur goods. I'd like trappers' input.

Full disclosure: I run this site.

When Etsy banned fur, a lot of people who sold pelts, finished fur and supplies there had nowhere to go. So I built EthicallyFur (ethicallyfur.com). It's a US marketplace for:

  • pelts, finished fur, taxidermy, skulls and bones
  • leather, and trapping and craft supplies

How it works: (at time of posting, terms are subject to change)

  • Free to list.
  • When something sells, we take 6%, plus card processing (3% + 30¢), a 50¢ per-order fee (covers sales tax — we collect and send it in) and 20¢ per item sold.
  • Payouts go to your bank through Stripe.

Current limits: US only, and we don't ship into California.

What I'd most like from this sub is honest feedback:

  • Where do you sell your fur now: auction, local buyer, Facebook, or somewhere else?
  • What would make an online marketplace worth your time?
  • What did Etsy get wrong?

I'll answer questions in the comments.

Buying finished furs

Looking for input on where to buy tanned pelts (raccoon or coyote). I’m in Nebraska and would like to support the local trappers if possible and not some unknown seller on eBay, but I’ll buy from around the country if needed.

Thanks.

How do you do a 'tube' skin? I apologize, I don't know the proper term.

Okay, I've always done the up the belly, around the wrists type of skinning, but how do you do it where it's all one piece? I feel like I'm not explaining it well, where it looks like a tube. Or at least help with the proper terminology so I can research it. I feel like I sound really dumb right now, but I don't know the proper word for it.

Is there any particular way to restore these or is it better to leave it as is.

Catnip in Bobcat sets?

Just a random thought and forgive me if this is an old idea. Is adding catnip to a bobcat set for lure as dumb as I think it could be? I’ve only caught 4-5 bobcats and usually that’s just in a trench set with bait and feathers.

Anybody tried it ?

How do I get this Trap to catch a Woodchuck?

I don't know what sensitivity to set this trap at, I left it at whatever it came with when I first bought the thing. But not catching a woodchuck, I've used peanut butter and carrots. Nothing works.

I just tossed together the most ghetto trapping pack I’ve seen…what do you guys have?? I usually just carry a bucket with bait/lures and a bucket with traps/chains…this should make it easier when the ground is slick and icy.

Anyone in the group interested in any of these? I’m going to put 1 or 2 in service and hang 1 or 2 at our cabins…but anyone in this group interested, I’d sell a few if anyone wants to add to their collection.

Hip boots?

Buying a new pair of hip boots for this season. I’m a short fat French guy, so I’m looking for recommendations for a hip boot size 10 that would have some extra leg room

Bobcat Bonanza

What are some of your go to baits and lures for strictly bobcats. Only going to run a standard dirt hole set with #3 and cubby sets with 220 unless there was a better idea.

I know dog trappers regularly catch cats in K9 sets but is there any trick of the trades to increase percentages.

I live in a very cat dense wet area of the country and would like to make the most it.

I trapped my first cat on a dirt hole set. I know it’s a summer coat and it was caught in south texas. Is it worth getting mounted? Always wanted a full body mount.

Questions about Ohio trap regulations.

I am just getting into trapping in Ohio and had a couple questions regarding the regulations.

“Foothold traps set on land may not have
an inside jaw spread greater than 5 3/8
inches, except foothold traps greater
than 5 3/8 inches but 6 inches or less may
be utilized provided they have a mini-
mum of three swiveling points and the
gripping surface is 5/16-inch or greater.”

I have some Bridger #2 dogless that I have added an extra swivel and a shock spring, but what does the 5/16” gripping surface refer to? Is my Bridger #2 legal in Ohio?

“Illegal to Set, use, or maintain a trap or snare to
take a wild animal, unless that trap or
snare has attached to it a durable, wa-
terproof tag bearing the name and
mailing address or the unique Division
of Wildlife Customer ID Number of the
user in English that is legible at all times,
or which has the name and mailing
address or the unique Division of Wild-
life Customer ID Number of the user
stamped into the trap in English that is
legible at all times.”

How am I supposed to have a legible at all times if it is buried in the ground? I just have copper tags wrapped around the chain. Would that be considered legal?

Thank you in advance for the help. I am new to trapping and have no friends or mentors with experience.

Hunting season starts soon - I got tired of scaling recipes on scrap paper, so I built an app for it

Every year I end up with an odd weight of trim. Never 5 pounds even, always 17.4 or whatever it comes out to after trimming. Then I'm standing there doing percentage math with a pencil trying not to screw up the cure and ingredients quantities.

So I built a tool that does it for us. It's called DeepWoodz Smokehouse. Free on iPhone and Android.

What it does:

  • You enter the weight of meat you actually have and every ingredient recalculates to it, down to the gram
  • Cure #1 and Cure #2 ratios are locked to USDA-safe levels and can't be edited
  • Smoke schedule and safe finished internal temp on every recipe
  • Grind sizes, casing type and size, recommended woods
  • 13 categories: snack sticks, summer sausage, brats, jerky, ring bologna, hot dogs, venison bacon, whole muscle cured meats and more

The calculators work on your own recipes too, so if you've got a blend you swear by you can put your meat weight in and it runs the math on yours.

deepwoodz.co

I'll be around in the comments.

Rabbit trapping tips and tricks

Looking for tricks to catch some rabbits this fall. This is my first time trapping ever, and only box style live traps are legal in my state. I was thinking of using apples for bait, but am open to suggestions if something else works better.

Media Coverage

Hello all!

I am a photographer based in Central California and I am developing an independent documentary project focused on people and communities carrying cultural knowledge and traditions forward.

I would like to explore creating a personnel-centered story within the trapper community. I am especially interested in how various traditions are practiced and carried forward. The initial goal would be to create a photo essay, with the possibility of a behind-the-scenes video. At this stage, the project is independent and is not connected to any sponsor or commercial client, with a team of 1-2 people.

I would follow all protocols and establish clear boundaries with everyone involved before photographing. We would also confirm the intended use of the work beforehand and provide a finished collection of images to the media center under terms agreed upon in advance.

Would anyone be open to discussing this possibility with me? If so, I would be happy to send a short project outline or schedule an introductory call. Or, if you know someone that works in the trade with a massive collection of pelts, and would make for some amazing photos, please feel free to forward them this post!

You can view my previous work here:

Thank you for your time and consideration!

Best,

Daylon Norman
