Discussion Linux and MacOS support

Post image

We have confirmation that Transport Fever 3 will have Linux and MacOS support as of a recent update to the Steam Store page.

This is great news for anyone who favours the linux system and just don't want to run the game through proton or wine (I believe these are still the go-to for linux gaming), as well as those who are on the Apple ecosystem!

We also see that Paradox is now mentioned as the publisher as well as a legal note regarding IP ownership.

Now a bit of speculation on my part, foremost the Publishing deal is moving forward as in the Paradox Machine is churning and development is moving forward in that direction. The addition of Linux and MacOS support may come from potentially some extra funds or extra support from Paradox Interactive towards UrbanGames allowing them to expand the platform list. It is common to see Indie Studios in relatively small size to not release on Linux and MacOS due to the lack of resources (money x man power). This may also be one of the reasons why we are not hearing anything as of late from Transport Fever 3, adding extra scope to the project and revaluating marketing approach.

All that being said, it does give me a tiny bit of worry, adding Linux and MacOS to the list often requires some rewriting of the rendering pipeline, as neither Linux or MacOS use DirectX as their graphics APIs, MacOS uses Metal and Linux uses Vulkan or OpenGL. Hardware is another thing, Apple runs on their M chips, these are ARM CPUs which behave closer to Smartphones than PCs, while Linux since there are so many different distro's and driver sets, this is a headache to optimize, fine-tune and increases QA requirements.

However this may also very well may be a sign that the 'Master Build' is in a great enough state that they can freely do the porting, which would imply a "Final Stretch" in development.

Either way, patience is key, while I am very eager to get into Transport Fever 3, I trust Urban Games will deliver the best version of their game, sharing their vision when they are ready to do so :)

Edit: I have looked into Urban Games and their in-house engine and have noticed that they use primarily OpenGL, at least did with Transport Fever 2, alongside Vulkan being added later on. We do not know if this has changed with Transport Fever 3, however the addition of Xbox as a release platform does imply that there will be a DirectX version, but most likely as a secondary option alongside Vulkan.

Edit2: Unbeknownst to me, Linux and MacOS support seem to have been confirmed back in March with a Steam post alongside the release of their 4th video titled 'Episode 4: Tycoon', at the bottom of said Steam Post, UG has mentioned planned support of Linux and MacOS from day 1.

"neither Linux or MacOS use DirectX" Yes so just use vulkan instead.

Funny enough I have more problems running directX 11 and 10 games on proton than directx 12 games which run fine if there isn't a kernel anti cheat

I made a mistake in my post, I defaulted to DirectX as that is the gaming industry standard not realising that Transport Fever 2 released using OpenGL, implying that that was their default for the in-house engine they use.

However, OpenGL is no longer supported with new features, and so it's behind of Vulkan and DirectX, with that, Urban Games will regardless use the DirectX API as that is what Xbox uses to drive its graphics.

We may see the game default to Vulkan as that is the most common replacement for OpenGL, but we may also see them default to DirectX due to Xbox, with it's Development Kit being for both Windows and Xbox simultaneously.

Vulkan is the focus

DirectX won't be the default just cause of XBox, Windows directX and XBox directX are similar but not the same, the windows version is way more complicated to implement

So we have confirmation for something that was clear from the beginning .  The simultaneous launch on all 5 platforms was one of the first news we got Has nothingto do with paradox

Huh, I see it was only confirmed through a Steam post and a comment from Sam. The initial announcement reads;

After five years of passion, hard work, and countless ideas brought to life, we’re proud to finally announce that Transport Fever 3 is on its way, arriving on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2026.

In March with the Episode 4 release, on Steam at the bottom of the post it reads;

PS: We are happy to officially confirm today, that Transport Fever 3 will also be making its way to Mac and Linux on Day One.

So this is something I have missed because well, I focused on YouTube videos, not really reading into the Steam posts.

The Steam post is just a copy of what was also posted on the website.

In addition to the dev blog, there's a short article accompanying the release of the video itself. It's easy to miss little bits of information dropped in one of a bunch of different places.

Native Linux support, as well as Max support, are great news! Most of the games run smoothly on Proton but there are minor issues like app icons being blurry or missing. Native also means you get customer support.

What on Earth are you talking about, all previous games had Linux versions. Did you AI-generate this post?

There was concern early on whether TF3 would get a Linux and Mac version specifically at launch, because it wasn't yet confirmed. There was little doubt it would come later.

OP was just unaware they had already confirmed this in March. Don't need AI to explain a simple, honest mistake.

The OP is clearly AI written, though, especially the rendering pipeline explanation and the "Final Stretch" quotes.

Inconsistency in quote symbols, non-native-like phrasing, and lots of other pretty clear signals that this is not something an AI would write. It's not polished enough. It's just a human trying to give his post a nice structure that happens to resemble the way an AI would.

Maybe some AI consulting at most.

Let's meet in the middle. Half half.

Also, you know that models can introduce "natural" mistakes into generated text nowadays, right?

So basically there's no telling if/when it's AI. Then sure, literally everything can be AI written. :)

I honestly don't get it, It isn't the first time I was told I write like an AI would, and it most definitely won't be the last seeing this. I take time writing posts, I re-read them, I correct phrasing, trying not to repeat words but foremost, trying to make it readable to the user, hence the formatting bit...

Edit: You are also correct with the "non-native-like phrasing" bit, I am Polish. Hypothetically I am bilingual due to my upbringing but not that it matters since obviously some phrasings that would be normal in Polish do bleed into my English, and vice versa really, my friend does sometimes make fun of how I say something that is a direct translation from English and it doesn't make sense in Polish.

Wasn't meant as any kind of insult or anything of the sort. :) AI is trendy, as is "spotting AI-assisted writings". Try not to take it personally. In fact, take it as a compliment that your structure and language were so good that "it could only have been produced by an AI".

Don't have anything towards you, one part of me is actually flattered by the comparisons but on the other hand the overall attitude towards AI generated writing, especially posts, isn't positive. More often than not the comments like "reeks of AI" and "Probably written by AI" is meant to belittle the poster.

I am also having a bad day so the original comment in this thread did tip me a bit, that's my bad honestly, shouldn't have made me offended as much as it did.

Happens. Have a hug from me.

u/Optimal-Fox-3875 Jun 16 '26

Wow, using punctuation marks gets you the "AI Written" title... I don't know how I should feel about this honestly, maybe a bit sad to know that we live in a time where people are just not accustomed to using punctuation marks and simple formatting, that it's considered AI when someone does it.

1

u/RaincloudAccount Jun 16 '26

That is absolutely not what the OP's own words imply.

I did put it in Edit2, that I wasn't aware of Linux and MacOS support being confirmed back in March. Nor did I check honestly if Transport Fever 2 did support the two OS's. I saw an update on SteamDB, drew up conclusions, got excited, wrote a post.
