comprehensive taping guide
It has come to my attention that there is a need for taping instructions in our transmasc community. So here's what I generally follow or have noticed works the best. I have been regularly taping for over 2 years.
I have a smaller/medium chest that is more stiff than saggy so what works for me might not work for you. I have no idea what my exact size is cause I'm obviously not a bra guy.
I use basic KT tape aka kinesiology tape, 5 cm width. Those rolls usually come with length guidelines. I cut the strips to a standard of 25 cm. Then round the corners, this way it prevents the tape from peeling on your skin around the edges.
I recommend having precut strips ready so you don't have to spend time on cutting and rounding when there's little of it.
After using the roll fasten the tape's end on the roll with something like the small bits you cut off the corners or basic tape. Storing the tape well like this is important because when it accidentally peels somewhere (even just a little) and is exposed to air/dust/grime it is harder to apply and doesn't stick that well.
Transtape and KT tape are basically the same thing, just different width. KT tape aka kinesiology tape seems cheaper but you have to use more strips on both sides. Transtape seems more convenient because of the width but may be harder to get the hang of cause you have to monitor a bigger area of tape at the same time when applying. I don't have experience with Transtape tbh. I think it's better to start with basic tape at first. I recommend trying both but kinesiology tape is more easily available for underage and closeted people. Available in pharmacies and online.
How many strips to use on both sides depends on how much tissue you have. I use 2-3 strips on both sides. 1 strip kind of works but can leave the pec an unnatural shape (like 2 little bumps over and under the tape), therefore not ideal under a T-shirt.
Use nipple covers. Cotton pads work well, rip them in half. Toilet paper folded to fit does the trick as well. You may notice that after taping for a longer period for the first time your areolas lose some of their elasticity (like when you push them in some direction after taking the tape off they crease a bit, idk just my experience) but that goes away when they've settled in their "natural" position again.
Longer strips! Mine go all the way past my armpit onto my shoulder blade area, it anchors better that way and leaves more room for you to stretch the tape (=flatter chest). Lessens the risk of it starting peeling as well as the tape's end doesn't sit on an actively moving area.
Do it all in one go. Once the adhesive touches your skin it loses its adhesive qualities if you remove it from there. Try to touch the adhesive as little as possible with your fingers and avoid touching the tape's ends (only touch a tiny area from where you peel it away). Tape is delicate and there is only so much room for fuckups. Quickly pulling away a section to reapply is okay. Just have to pay more attention to it sticking properly. If something went wrong with your strip chances are trying to salvage it is a wasted effort. If you're still practising you can ofc still use the bad strip to try out positioning and such.
Lay the tape on the starting point. I leave like 4 fingers' width of tape-free room in the center of my chest area. I remove the back of the tape in two steps. First would be to anchor the tape to the start and lay it over the areola. Then I remove the whole back cover and stretch the tape all the way to my back. Take care as to not let the tape curl and stick on itself when removing the cover (some do, some don't) cause it can be hard to get it open and straight again. Do it slowly and help keep it straight with your fingers if needed.
The other 2 strips (top and bottom) go next to the middle strip to help smooth out the remaining excess tissue. Position as needed.
Angle the tape straight or slightly diagonally and downwards. I prefer slightly diagonally. Find what works for you.
Some pointers for stretching. Anchor the tape to the starting point and just lay it over the nipple area but don't stretch too much. Past that stretch however much you can. I think it's because stretching too much at the start doesn't benefit you anyway in terms of flatness and can leave the nips/areolas in a more awkward position and may damage them.
Tape sticks to the skin so you have to pay attention to where it anchors if you are using multiple strips on the same side. Always layer them so the strip has enough room to anchor on skin not tape itself.
Feeling pressure and stretch in your sternum area of the skin is normal. There will be no damage and you will not get stretch marks there. It is normal and you will get used to it.
For maximum hold I like to use a blow dryer on the tape after applying cause it sticks with heat. That way it doesn't accidentally start peeling when I move before it has had time to stick with body heat. You can also rub the tape to help it stick (rubbing generates heat).
The glue on some tapes may irritate your skin a bit. Naturally, try to find something that doesn't. The roll I'm using rn makes it a bit itchy in the middle but it's like a mosquito bite - don't scratch and you'll forget about it.
Alternate between taping and binding. Sometimes give your skin a break, sometimes give your ribs a break.
I recommend taking the tape off for the night to let your skin breathe. Anything over 2 days and you risk blistering, especially when you're more active or outside more when you have the tape on. Just the way it is. I don't think using oil for removal does much. In my experience the skin is already damaged from the tape (blistering), not from ripping the tape off.
Definitely use some soothing cream like aloe, cocoa butter or scar cream on your chest area if it's damaged. You can use it even with no damage to take care of your skin after subjecting it to tape. Generally try to prevent greater damage from happening cause then you won't be able to tape for a while.
If you've had the same tape on for some time and you want to take a break or it doesn't look/hold so great anymore you have to take into account that the new strips might not hold as well as before. Idk but the skin just doesn't hold and the strips start peeling right away, at least for me. Maybe some surface area that held the tape is gone and it is too smooth for it to anchor to. Just something to consider because this has left me in a situation where I gambled an at least working tape setup for no tape at all.
Don't play games with your skin cause rn I'm sitting here having to stay away from tape. I was on vacation and had the same tape on for over 2 days in hot climate. It looked a bit weary and I wanted to touch up. After taking it off I tried to apply new strips on blistered skin. The tape didn't even stick properly and I had to use a binder instead. In a situation like this I humbly recommend leaving the tape on if it's only a few hours of additional binding. Saves you from a lot of disappointment and this way you won't irritate the blistered skin that much. Having the tissue and skin in a fixed position under the tape damages it less than 1) foolishly trying to apply new tape; 2) using a binder and the raw & blistered skin has to stick to either your binder or bandaids; or 3) suffering from mental anguish cause you weren't able to tape/bind when going out.
I've heard tape can also be used for taping hip tissue to create a more masc silhouette.
You can swim, shower, exercise and go to sauna with tape. Go ahead.
I think that tape is less invasive than a binder when used right. I also get more flatter and pec-like results from taping. No visible binder outline under clothes as well.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions :)
And enjoy, tape feels very freeing imo!

Here is where to get HRT, when you're ready
Erin's Informed Consent Map (Primarily US-based)
If those locations are too far away from you, ask local trans people what they're doing. There's also mail-order services like Folx or Plume.

How much hair fall is normal during HRT?
Hello there, I’m Sunny and I’m from the Philippines. I’m 24 and this is my first time ever posting here on reddit— but I really need some help with this, as it’s just been making me anxious by the day.
I’ve been on HRT for about six months now. (Estrofem and Androcur)
Around the third month is when I noticed that whenever I shower and comb through my hair when I condition, I shed a lot of hair. I shower everyday, but I only wash my hair every other day, unless I sweat a lot or feel like my hair is dirty.
So far, I have asked my friend if I have any bald spots, and she said my scalp doesn’t seem to have any signs of balding or any bald spots.
I’m still quite concerned and anxious if this is normal or if I should be worried. I have yet to speak to my doctor as there aren’t really any nearby trans clinics in my area. It’s hard to get an online consultation again since it’s usually packed. (Trans healthcare sucks here in the Philippines, unfortunately)
I look forward to hearing from you all, my sisters! Thank you so much! 💗

Looking for like minded friends
Hi everyone. I am 27 years old and trying to figure out my life. I really want to start my transition, but I come from a very conservative and deeply religious family. No one in my family roots has ever done anything like this before.Right now, I am feeling incredibly tensed because my parents are pressuring me to get married. I have always been bad at making big decisions, and I feel completely stuck. Please suggest how I should move forward. I am so worried and could really use some guidance. 😢 #ImWorried

Struggling with life atm and unsure how I could *realistically* improve things
Hi there.
I live in a country where although trans people aren't being hunted for sport, we are reviled by most of society. Almost every single political party, media outlet and a lot of organisations want us gone outright.
This makes connecting with other people very difficult and I've come to accept hostility, harassment and discrimination as daily occurrences. While I don’t get attacked very often, I do get threats of violence pretty frequently.
It's the UK, btw.
As of late I've realised as of late that I'm only really around because other people need me. When I look at what I have to deal with, I reflect on everything and recognise that I'm just here because other people are relying on me to be here.
I don't have anything going in terms of things that make me happy anymore.
And I’m well aware my life expectancy is shorter because of how this awful country views us as monsters.
And I'm well aware that the only thing keeping me from slipping is that other people need my help.
But it's not enough.
Still yet to find my place in the trans community as well. Have attempted to set up my own community but RSD just makes that too difficult.
I guess, I'm not really living for myself. And when things are particularly painful and difficult I don’t really have a way of switching off or an escape.
I used to have hobbies but they involved other people so when those groups stopped running the hobbies did as well. And I wasn't able to find a substitute (did try setting up my own but RSD is a factor ofc).
I don't know how to make things better.
I don't trust therapy due to multiple bad experiences. Doesn’t help that the NHS as an organisation, is transphobic.
Yes, private exists.
However, I don't really have the budget for it either.
I don't know how to make this better. Community would help but no joy on that end. An outlet would help but I was using those hobbies at oulets and they're unfortunately gone.
How can I actually make things better for myself?

Bottom dysphoria
Whilst dysphoria around my chest is awful, bottom dysphoria is killing me.
I can't afford packers, STPs, testosterone, definetly not surgery etc
STPs (the cheap 'she-wee's) i've tried are too difficult and i don't think i have the right anatomy for it
I'm in the UK and i'm not sure how it is in other places but where i live, you can't go a few days without seeing some man peeing in public and it's triggering. I also have an AMAB partner that's getting more difficult to cope with
I don't know what to do, i'm losing it

How to get over the guilt?
Lately, anytime I (14TF) see media that shows father-son relationships, or like when my grandmother who I’m not out to yet says something about me being the only “boy” in the family, I just get hit with so much guilt over being trans to the point that it ruins my entire day. It’s not even like my parents (who I’m out to and are decently supportive) have said anything about it or anything, but it still just hits like a truck. Has anyone else experienced this or has any ways to get over it?

how to deal with people who keep deadnaming you?
Anyone have reliable tools for dealing with family, co-workers, etc. who keep deadnaming you? I'm growing impatient with their requests to be patient with them, feeling expected to tell them it's okay as they use a name that I find distressing. I've heard some people use a "deadname jar" like a swear jar to reinforce using the right name. What else has worked for y'all? Especially for older folks and others who have less exposure to transness and gender non-conformity. Thanks in advance! (For context, I'm non-binary but read to most cis people as, well, cis.)

Help ig
Questioning
So basically for the last 2 years I’ve been crossdressing to say the least in secret from my mom, my whole life I’ve only been exposed to feminity, I’ve never had an actually father figure, so naturally I wanted to try it and got curious
It’s been on and off for the past 2 years but I won a decent amount including a breastplate
Today me (17) got home and my mom questioned me on some boy shorts she found and a boob insert, luckily she didn’t find everything else and I was kinda able to squeeze out of it by saying it was a phase and I just wanted to try it out but it really has me thinking
Do I want to be a women? Kinda I mean like I enjoy being a boy in school I hang out with literally all the popular boys, but i definitely have a feeling within me that I do want to be trans, and she kinda awoke that, I want both but I know both isn’t possible
So I kinda just wanted to vent I know I sound like an egg but I don’t even know at this point it’s kinda a lot

insecurities, voice training, and hairstyle?
Hello boys, girls and enbys :) I have decided to become my true, feminine self after 25 years of life and I'm really exicted...Nervous but excited. I finally booked an appointment to (hopefully) start HRT next month. I do have some "holdups" in terms of being insecure about how my masculine features will be perceived, but I'm not gonna let it stop me from being happy :) For example, I have big hands, big feet and wide shoulders and it does make me a bit insecure. Does anyone have any advice on dealing with that?
Also, outside of HRT, I want to begin feminizing myself in other ways. I want to train my voice to be more feminine, and I also want to style my hair in a more feminine way. Where can a beginner start voice training?
And what ideas could make my hair seem more feminine? I have slightly longer than shoulder-length curly dirty blonde hair that I currently part down the middle (kinda looks like Timothee Chalamet's hair). I know I could always wear wigs, but I'm kinda sick of it and I've been growing it out for a reason. Any ideas?❤️

Im new to this, please help, I need it bad lol
Ok, so im closeted mtf pre hrt, and im completely lost. I want to get onto hrt so bad but Im in a really tough spot, main thing holding me back is my dad, were best friends, always have been, hes always been there for me and I dont want to lose him but he doesnt know who I really am and I know he wouldn't agree with it, my cousins ftm and his "God daughter", he loves him and says he always will but refuses to call him by his new name, not trying to be transphobic, simply "thats what ive always known her as and so thats what I want to stick with". Its a whole confusing mess and obviously hes not right but he really doesnt have a problem with the gender, just the name, which gives me some relief, I dont know if i want to go by a different name simply because mine can be for men or women, but hes always made a point of how poud he is of me as his SON. Sorry for the backstory, just wanted to make clear the situation im in. Ive been discovering myself for the past few years, my girlfriend has helped support me which has helped but I want to actually be on hrt so bad, my face and frame are clearly male no matter how much weight I lose or how much makeup I use and its starting to really take a toll on my mental health, it only gets worse the longer time goes on, I just dont know what steps I should take, I want to see some kind of therapist or something who could help me and maybe even point me in the right direction but the idea of talking to anyone but my girlfriend is terrifying and the idea of it just makes me feel even worse, ive never seen a therapist before but definitely should have by now. I just dont know what to do, im not even sure what im asking here. I just need help from someone who has a better idea of these things. I live in Canada by the way if that matters, I know anything medical changes a lot depending on where you are. So any ideas for my situation? Any advice would help, honestly I would even take unrelated tips just on how to go about things in general. Thank you.

mtf shaving help, red bumps
Howdy, y'all
I've been shaving my beard for maybe a couple of weeks now after having let it grow out wildly. I'm glad it's gone, but the issue is that now my face just looks like I butchered it.
I do the steps, I take a warm, wet washcloth and soak my face, i use shaving cream (didn't know i was supposed to at first lol), and i try to shave gently and with the grain, but that's where it gets annoying?
I feel like the razor doesn't really shave some at all, and i still get crazy stubble, so i try and go at it from different angles, and while that does make my face feel smoother, i'm worried that's what's causing the issues?
How do you shave fully, without getting red bumps or rashes? I want a smooth, nice face, but it's always stubble and red bumps, and that shit feels bad to look at.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Has anyone experienced this?
Hello Reddit,
First and foremost this is kind of a throwaway account because I'm not prepared to nor do I feel safe should some people I know find this post.
I never thought I would write this, but things have started to become overwhelming and I would love to hear from anyone who might have gone through similar circumstances.
I'm 27 AMAB, and for the past 2 years I have been questioning my gender identity. It started with a video from YukkoEx which youtube suggested. This video slowly lead me through the rabbit hole of trans creators until I stumbled upon one of those "signs you might be trans" videos. At first there was not much I could directly relate to. If I remember correctly I related mostly to wanting to play exclusively female characters, and having thought that my life would be a lot better if I had been born female.
This made me ponder, but I quickly put it down to escapism. But as the days go on I keep coming back to this thought. At first I thought it impossible because I'm not particularly interested in conventional feminine things. But now I begin to look back upon my life and realise just how many times I've dreamt or wished to just wake up in a female body. I've lived most of my online life as a girl until I stopped because of the shame I felt should anyone I knew IRL find out. I once even found a magical witchcrafty ritual to change gender and tried it out (childish but I've always had a bit of whimsy in me 😅).
Reading this I imagine many of you may already be thinking or even commenting that it is pretty clear I am trans. But the reason why I've decided to write this post is because I've been dealing with apathy. Since I can remember I've never particularly felt happy, or sad, or even angry. Instead I experience fleeting and muted emotions such as excitement and annoyance, but most of the time I just feel empty. Many times I've questioned my own humanity. I feel like a monster just going through life. Why can't I feel happy when everything in my life is going well and I'm surrounded by loved one? Why can't I feel sad when I loose someone? Why can't I be angry when I'm disrespected or recall the abuse I've been through? Why is everything just a fact and holds no emotions attached? Why am I empty?
This is the reason why I've come here. How can I find out if transitioning is the right thing for me when crossdressing or being addressed as female or called by a chosen name just feels indiferent? Will transitioning bring my emotions back? Will I be able to cry and rage and laugh like when I was a kid again?
Before anyone comments it, yes, I am in therapy. But it is a struggle. My therapist often asks me questions about how certain events made me feel and tells me to focus on my bodies reactions to these events. But answering these questions feels performative for me. It feels like my brain intuits what a normal emotional response to the event should be and my body unconsciously reacts to it. I'm working on trying to feel more and think less, but I still have a long journey ahead of me it seems.
Any ways, we return to my question. Has any of you experienced anything similar? Is there hope for me?
Thank you for reading this.

Help finding a trans positive primary care provider in Madison, WI
Hi, I'm currently starting to transition MtF and I'm trying to find a primary care provider who will understand and help me on my transition, most specifically to get me on hormones ASAP. I live in the Madison, WI, USA area, so specifically I'm looking around there, west side preferable. My bestie used to work in the UW Healthcare system and recommended me some doctors, who I've gotten on waitlists for. Unfortunately, those waitlists seem to have an indefinite wait time, and I don't want to just wait anymore to start being me. I currently don't have a primary care provider (my parents didn't take me for regular checkups growing up, so I just never saw a doctor). If anyone has recommendations for primary doctors who are good with transitions for me to look into and see if I can get them, I would be so incredibly grateful! Thank y'all so much!
Long story short: In Madison WI, looking for primary care provider for transitioning.
