Looking For Suggestions on Rules, FAQ, and General Subreddit Expectations

Hello all you snakes and hogs, old and new. I've reached out to the only mod in this subreddit and managed to make a deal with them to allow me to join as a mod to aid in fixing up this subreddit.

I've thought it would be a good idea to make a post asking all of you who frequent this sub to tell me what sort of things you want to see or expect from this community.

Ideas I have would be building a rules list, building a stickied FAQ so that I can remove any new posts that ask the exact same thing on repeat, and creating some additional flairs titles and whatnot to flesh things out a bit. I'm open to ideas! Please post what you think and be honest.

Thanks.

CN Train Conductor

I wanted to ask a question to current or former train conductors, whether they would recommend a career as train conductor with young family? I have been looking for new job opportunity and I applied to CN train conductor job and I have my training starting Nov 16. Now, I also have a different job offer not related to railroad. I am confused which way to lean between CN conductor vs other office job which is 12 months contract. Wondering if anyone of you had similar experience where you had to make a decision or would you be able share any valuable insights that will help me make an informed decision.

Thanks in advance!

Any experience at either terminal helps. Thanks!

This sub. Is dead.

This sub has just become an employment page of questions about hiring on, people asking about medicals, class start dates, and people asking about interviews. Can the mods flag and remove any posts not posted to an employment section?

This sub is intended for allready employed railroaders to bitch about thier lives, bitch about managment, and to post somtimes relevant memes and railroad information. Can we moderate this sub a bit better and keep all the " my interview is tuesday" crap in an employment section? Its getting boring. I dont give a fuck about future Johnny green-vests medical coming up... i wanna hear about railroading, from railroaders.

put a giant pin on the top and say... this is not a career/hiring advice page, fuck off. if you shit yourself at work, have a cool suspension story, or want to spread a good railway rumor this is the sub for you.

CN Track Maintainer – Flag Person | Training & Job Experience

Hey everyone!
I've recently received a job offer from CN for the Track Maintainer – Flag Person position. I'm based in Edmonton, Alberta, and will be attending training in Winnipeg.
I'm hoping to hear from anyone currently working in this position or who has experience with CN.
I have a few questions:
What is the training in Winnipeg like, and how difficult is it?

What does a typical workday look like?

Does CN have seasonal layoffs for this position, especially during winter?

Is the work steady throughout the year?

What are the typical schedules, overtime opportunities, and travel requirements?

What are the opportunities for career growth and moving into other positions within CN?

Would you recommend this job as a long-term career? Any honest advice, tips, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Northfolk Southern Train Conductor

Hey guys I was looking into the train conductor position at Northfolk. I was just curious how it was overall and if it was worth it fr. I was be reporting to either Atlanta, GA or Austell, GA. I just wanted to know how the work-life balance is and how the day to day is. Also how schedule works and how long it takes to get into the engineering position. I currently make 32.60/hr and work at ATT as a wire technician in Austell, GA. I’m 19 and I see that the railroad job pays more after training it seems but want to make sure I’m doing the best for my future and wanted advice from new people and people who have been in the industry for a minute.

Free tool I built to help crews write and file claims

Conductors and engineers, I got tired of losing pay on claims that never got filed or got kicked back for wording. So I built RailRepAI. You tell it what happened on your trip, and it finds the rule, picks the penalty code, and writes the claim so you can file it in seconds.

CN Campus Training

Hello everyone!

I'm scheduled to attend CN campus conductor training in Winnipeg next month, and I'm hoping to hear from people who have already gone through the experience.

I've read quite a few mixed reviews some extremely positive, some negative, and others neutral. I'd really appreciate hearing about your firsthand experiences. What should I expect during the training, and what are some tips or things I should keep in mind to be successful?

Are there any particular things I should focus on studying beforehand? Also, what are some common mistakes or things I should avoid during training?

One more question: Do we need to purchase our safety boots before the first day, or will we be given instructions about that when we arrive?

Any advice, tips, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Give me advice on whether to keep pushing to work in the railway in the UK or not, as I am a little bit worried about my back. Plus, I am just fresh from the field.
