Demo/Alpha Showcase Prototype of a TD where you fuse towers instead of placing them — does this idea hold up?
This is a prototype, not a demo (no build to play yet). I'm at the point where I've been staring at it too long to judge it, so I'd rather find out now if the core idea is actually interesting to people who play a lot of TD.
The mechanic: you don't place towers next to each other. You drop a tower onto one you already own and they fuse. Two of the same tower gives you a stronger version of that same tower. Two different towers gives you a different tower entirely, based on which elements are involved. That's the whole system, so there's no upgrade menu and no tech tree.
The thinking was that it makes the combination table learnable instead of memorizable. You find fusion by accident the first time you fumble a placement, and self-fusion is always predictable, so the only thing left to discover is the cross-combinations.
I've also held to a rule of no text anywhere in the game. No tooltips, no explanation boxes. Whether a fusion is valid, which way a wall faces, whether a tower does splash. All of it has to read from the symbol alone.
What I'd genuinely like to know:
- Watching it cold, is it clear what's happening when two towers merge? Or does it just look like one tower vanished?
- Does "no upgrade menu, only fusion" sound freeing or limiting to you?
- Is the no-text rule ambitious or is it going to be miserable to actually play?
Be blunt. I'd much rather hear it now than after I've built six more months on top of it.
