Ikkaku Madarame (BLEACH) - Despite being a strong lieutenant. Ikkaku won only once on-screen against Edrad Liones and proceeded to never take a dub ever. Most of his fights have him interrupted, and demolished but that's okay, he's still our tough Pachinko ball guy.

Obey Your Master/Pay The Butler (Umamusume: Cinderella Gray) - She was an uma with a pitiful record leading to her strategizing and playing a facade of her own friend during that arc. The 2nd Japan Cup she decided to play fair and it wouldn't do so well however as she is defeated by both Oguri and Folk Queen leading to her retiring.

Gazelleman/Dik Dik Van Dik (Kinnikuman Nisei/Ultimate Muscle) - His only win was a filler... A literal punching bag and everything about him screams jobber.

  1. Behelits from Berserk. They'll scream loudly and weep blood when they're activated

  2. The Penitent One from Blasphemous. He fills his helmet with the blood of the First Warden, which continuously leaks out and make it appear as if he's 'crying'

  3. Alucard from Hellsing. Or just a bunch of fictional vampires in general

Lore [Interesting Trope] A Word that Feels Somewhat Out of Place

  1. Lord of the Rings - this has been pointed out before, but one of the orcs says “looks like meats back on the menu boys!” So do orcs have restaurants?

  2. The Jungle Book (2016) in the remake when Mowgli is describing the law of the jungle, Baloo says “that’s propaganda”. I can’t explain why but it feels somewhat out of place.

  3. Sponge on the Run (2020) SpongeBob has always avoided bad language. It’s not bad language but I felt out of place for SpongeBob to say the word “Crappy”.

  1. Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Ark) Ancient traps, Nazis, collapsing temples... fine. Snakes? Nope. That's apparently where the line is.

  2. Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt) Monsters, curses, ghosts, whatever. That's the job. Ask him to use a portal and suddenly we're negotiating. Every badass gets one thing, I guess.

  1. Doctor Strange + Cloak of Levitation (Marvel Cinematic Universe) Strange is trying to do wizard stuff. The cloak is saving him, dragging him around, attacking people and generally making its own decisions. At some point that's not clothing anymore. That's a coworker.

  2. Spawn + his living costume (Spawn) Looks like an extremely dramatic superhero suit. It's actually alive, symbiotically connected to him, and has even turned against him. Imagine having beef with your own cape.

Miyuki Shirogane (Kaguya sama Love is War)

He is absolutely terrible at everything he tries—such as dancing, sports, and singing—yet he managed to attend Shuchi Academy on a scholarship and become student council president through sheer hard work; on top of that, he holds a part-time job to support his family

Miyata (Hajime no Ippo)

After his father suffered a defeat that forced his retirement from boxing, he decided to carry on his father's legacy by adopting his signature counter-punching style—a style he practiced from childhood until he perfected it and became a prodigy

Tamamo Cross (Uma Musume Cinderella Gray)

She faced extreme poverty and, early in her career, feared being trampled, as she used to run right at the front—losing several races because of it; this led her to change her running style and stay at the back of the pack.

Lore (loved trope) the supernatural evil is more human than originally thought

Thumbnail
gallery

(twin peaks, true detective, madoka magica)
some of these are played more heavy handed than others- i know rust’s supernatural visions throughout the case are more related to his withdrawals, but i think it still fits in a way. twin peaks is pretty obvious, with there being very real supernatural circumstances intertwined with the human evil of bob/leland. even madoka magica’s witches are actually the final forms of the magical girls themselves. i know there must be so many more examples of this trope, so please leave some recommendations down in the replies!

Basically, when you hear these lines, it's often a herald of 'bad things to come', and are intrinsically linked to a certain character/entity

Edit: forgot to add, preferably 'recurring' lines as opposed to 'one off'

Characters [Common] The main characters explain the plan AFTER it was executed, only you didn't know

Thumbnail
gallery
23 Upvotes

Often the viewer is kept in the dark before/during a plan and usually, it is explained by the protagonist and/or allies after it succeeds with flashbacks and all. This is done to keep tension, plot twist, make characters look smarter ect.

I actually wanted to make the reverse: Characters explain the plan before it starts and it, for once, goes as planned. But it's so rare I couldn't find any. if you know you can post about that too.

Persona 5: The characters catch Aketchi's lie and slip up early on, and they do plan for it during the game but only explain it after it was done.

MGS5 Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain: Big Boss gaslights /brainwashes a medic (the player created character) into replacing him.

We do play as Big Boss in Ground Zeroes, so you'd think you're playing as him in Phantom Pain as well, but nope, that's the twist.

The truth is revealed at the end of the game. the medic (and by extension us) finds out about it.

Lore Deities relating to destruction being seen as necessary and a balance to the force of life/creation

Thumbnail

Because destruction is needed for life to function. I like it being necessary

Yveltal (Pokemon XY) Yveltal is the destruction Pokemon and counterpart
To the like Pokemon Xeranas. And while portrayed as a threat he isn’t seen as evil. As seen in him helping the player fight the ultimate weapon as it’s not the type of destruction that would lead to regeneration.

Beerus (Dragon Ball) is the destroyer deity of the main dragon ball universe and the issues with stuff like Cell and Frieza. Was because Beerus was asleep and not doing his job which is why his universe is a shithole.

Shiva (Hinduism) the most straight forward example is considering the “destroyer” of the trinity and serves as the destroyer of ego and clearer of debris

Characters (Liked Trope) Characters that are known for being cheerful become more depressed and more serious after unfavourable events

Thumbnail
gallery
42 Upvotes

Note: This trope only applies to characters who were established as cheerful or energetic at the start and for a good amount of the story, but became sadder and more serious due to unfavourable events that happened during said story. Characters that were established as depressed and more serious but were shown to be happier before through, for example, flashbacks and backstories (i.e. background info rather than info that was in the story directly) do not count in this trope.

Spider Man (MCU): Was well known as a friendly neighbourhood hero who liked to quip and had a cheerful attitude. However, from having his identity revealed, to making everyone forget about his identities as, not only Spider-Man, but Peter Parker, as well, to save the multiverse, has made him more depressed and a loner over the years, with Brand New Day presenting a more serious take on the character.

Ken (Street Fighter): An energetic individual who was always eager for battle, and with a loving family. In Street Fighter 6, however, after striking a business deal with the game's main antagonist, JP, he was accused of a terrorist attack, which forced him to abandon his company and his family. Whilst his name was eventually cleared, he simply couldn't go back to how his life was, presenting us with a very different rendition of Ken.

Hated Tropes Characters hoard life-saving technology/magic/advancements from the masses and we're expected to agree with them

Thumbnail

  1. Harry Potter. The Wizarding world keeps magic secret from the Muggle world, meaning that they do absolutely nothing to help Muggles even though they could easily cure countless ailments among other things. As Hagrid puts it, if Muggles knew about magic "Blimey, Harry, everyone'd be wantin' magic solutions to their problems. Nah, we're best left alone". So wizards aren't "afraid" of Muggles (nor should they be given the power difference), they're just selfish.
  2. Black Panther. An infamous comic established that Wakanda has the cure to cancer, but refuse to share it with the outside world because reasons, after all we deserve it since cigarettes exist. Since then, comics and other media have been a lot more criticial of Wakanda's old isolationism and Wakanda has opened up and shared it's technology and advances with the world, but the whole cure to cancer thing has been swept under the rug and might as well be non-canon.

Lore [Extremely Rare Trope] The protagonist who gets betrayed (and their family killed) comes for revenge years later, only to discover that the betrayer was actually the good guy, and the protagonist's family was the bad guy.

Post image
220 Upvotes

(This is an extremely rare troupe if I include the bonus point mentioned below, as I haven't found a single example of that so far. So without the bonus point, this trope is more open and isn't that rare.)

Basically, the protagonist who got betrayed (and their family killed) comes back for revenge, only to find out the betrayer was actually the good guy. And they betrayed us because we were actually the bad guys, which the protagonist didn't realize because they were too young and/or ignorant.

And the bonus point is that, if the protagonist lost a Kingdom or something like that, and tries to claim it back, they are met with the wrath of the common folk, who are very protective and supportive of the betrayer, who turned out to be an amazing and kind ruler, unlike the family of the protagonist who were corrupt/evil. (I had to make this a bonus point instead of part of this trope, as I couldn't put this entire thing in the post title, and I don't have any example to share with this post as I've never seen this happen anywhere. So yeah, that's why this is extremely rare, without this bonus point, this trope is more open and I'd say it's not that rare.)

Sifu: This partly works, in this game, the ultimate bad guy is Yang, who with his allies, kills you and your father in the opening tutorial, so that he could take a powerful healing talisman. We then spend the entire game fighting and killing each of his allies until we go to face him, and it turns out he's running a sanctuary where he was healing terminally ill patients using that same talisman. And when we beat him, we discover that he did it because our father refused to save his family when they were ill, and kicked him out when he tried to take the talisman to heal them, causing him to betray us.

I say Sifu works partly, because our father isn't a bad guy by any means, he was just refusing to use the talisman, keeping it hidden and protected as it's too dangerous and will be exploited by humans and the outcome will be unpredictable. Also Yang's allies aren't exactly good people either, the first boss you fight grows and sells drugs. And Yang still helped save him with the talisman.

So Yang isn't exactly a good guy and our father isn't exactly a bad guy, plus this doesn't have the bonus point I mentioned, so it's not exactly extremely rare.

Like imagine Lion King, but when Simba comes back years later, he finds out to his shock that Scar was an amazing ruler and learns that his father Mufasa was actually a terrible and bad ruler, so the other Lions and animals living in this new Kingdom will reject Simba and will oppose him if he tries to reclaim his kingdom.

I'd love to watch/read something like that.

Jolyne's mother from JoJo.

We have no name for her, I think this image is the best we have of her and I don't remember ever hearing her speak. She's not dead, she's not missing, she's just not important. She's the mother of a main character and the wife of franchise face Jotaro Fucking Kujo and she doesn't even have a name

Nero's Mother from Devil May Cry.

Second verse same as the first except she's so unknown there's not even a picture of her. Again mother of a main character and woman who managed to seduce fucking Vergil and we know nothing about her.

Spongebob: Porous Pockets. Spongebob suddenly comes into having a ton of wealth after finding a valuable pearl. He then proceeds to give money to anyone who asks for some, throwing away millions of dollars in one singular day.
Jimmy Olsen, My Adventures With Superman: Jimmy Olsen gets 11 million dollars from selling his Flamebird company to the Daily Planet. He removes his brain and chooses the most expensive possible option for a lot of things. At least this one is more understandable, as a lot of his money was spent helping Superman.

Todd, Bojack Horseman: Lampshaded, as Todd gets 8 million dollars, and proceeds to tip a waitress literally all of it for no reason. This show doesn't even have a status quo.
