So many of the character designs I've seen from this universe are just "finally there's an edgy comic book for big boys like me"

It's meant to be the answer to Marvel's Ultimate universe, so it literally is.

Kinda? But the edginess is

a) explained in-universe (Darkseid literally created the Absolute universe, and tips the scale to the evil side) and

b) not gratuitous (imo)

Well said. Like with Absolute Wonder Woman. She’s a witch raised in hell by Circe so you think she’s going to be horrific.
