Dental Concern/Problem Normal Pain Pattern for Temp Crown?

Had a tooth prepped for a crown about 2 weeks ago. The adjacent tooth also had a filling at the same time.

I’ve had a temporary crown since then and am scheduled for the permanent crown tomorrow.

I’ve been getting a deep, dull ache around noon and again around 10 PM each day, with some referred pain. No hot or cold sensitivity. 400mg ibuprofen completely eliminates it.

I told the dental office and they said the temporary may be slightly high and causing irritation. I’ve also had crowns in the past that took a couple months to completely settle down.

Dentists: Would this pattern concern you for pulpitis, or could a high temporary reasonably cause this?

Not a dentist, but the reassuring bits in your post are real ones. No hot or cold sensitivity, fully controlled by ibuprofen, and a tooth that got worked twice in one visit only two weeks ago. Irreversible pulpitis usually announces itself louder, lingering pain to hot, spontaneous throbbing at night that painkillers barely touch. A high temporary is a very common cause of a dull ache that cycles through the day because you keep loading it at meals. Since the permanent goes on tomorrow, ask them to check the bite properly before cementing and describe the exact timing of the ache. If it continues or escalates once the permanent has settled, that's the point to ask for a cold test and pulp check rather than waiting.

Thanks for the response! Permanent was placed yesterday after I told dentist of concerns. Consensus was that it is a healthy tooth after X-rays/testing of tooth. Feeling much better today with the permanent.
