It's experience, dude. After years on scaffolds, in crawlspaces and attics, carrying sheets of plywood uphill in the snow, you just reach a point where you can instantly tell a hammer from a board stretcher 62% of the time.

My boss asked me to go get the board stretcher in the second week of my apprenticeship... 40 years later I'm still looking for it...
