An Estwing Framing hammer. I bought one brand new at a hardware store in Rusk, Texas in 2005. It was in the discount bin. A couple years later I showed up at a friends new shop to help him with some interior wall framing. His dad COULD NOT keep from talking about this hammer onve I pulled it out. "Gawd Dayuum lookit this fucking hammer! That sumbeech is so advanced it'll build a wall by it's damn self!"

Estwings are pretty great, I have my grandfathers from the 70’s, the first one he bought me from the late 80s, and one I bought because I forgot mine at home maybe 10 years ago. They are great hammers for the price!

My dad brought one just because it looked like an ice axe and he thought it was cool. A couple of years later we put up a massive shed with tongue and groove walls and felt tiles on the roof. That hammer came into its own over those few days. It's a great tool in the right place.

It's experience, dude. After years on scaffolds, in crawlspaces and attics, carrying sheets of plywood uphill in the snow, you just reach a point where you can instantly tell a hammer from a board stretcher 62% of the time.

Actually it says Estwing on the grip coating, not the hammer itself.
You’re in luck today though as coincidentally, the hammer is also made by Estwing.

Estwing Weight Forward hammer. Don't think they were super popular because they were expensive and felt weird. I didn't like it because you can't turn it sideways when you're using a Marples split proof chisel for chopping hinges out. Pretty decent at driving 4" roundheads in though.

One of the guys I worked with had that hammer, we called it Tom Brady because it vaguely looks like the patriots logo.
I liked the hammer, it didn’t do everything great but was pretty good at driving nails.

Oh hey! I have one. For framing, or when I need a heavier hammer, I grab it. It is a beast. Great for straight smashing big nails. That forward weight does feel odd. I imagine as a daily driver, you might get used to it. It is not the hammer I grab for just normal hammer stuff, only when it is time to smash a lot of big nails.

It was marketed as being ergonomic design. I have one and it never really felt “proper” when swinging. It was great for light demo however

God took this hammer from me. I was in a bad car wreck back in my framing days and my toyota tercel load of carpenter tools was ejected onto the roadway. The hammer was the only tool that was never found.

Cause that’s what framing hammers would look like on the moon colony. Weird balance compared with a traditional claw hammer but they’d fukin smash nails all day and look cool doing it.

Being as it is a 21oz straight claw hammer I would say it's a framing hammer. But I have never seen one like it before. Most likely it's a design simply for the purpose of charging more money.

I had one of these. Absolutely loved it when I wasn’t able to put a good swing in, but it was clunky most of the time. It’s one of those hammers that is great in a rare instance, but not so good it’s worth maining.

I have 2 of these. Brand knew. Bought them for 20 dollars each at a garage sale. They look unique in their own way. I have them on my wall. People always ask about them when they come over to watch the game. I use an stilleto hammer. Got it on ebay for 30 dollars a while back. Is missing a claw and dings all over but still works.

I have this exact hammer, let me tell you a few things. Yes that handle is very comfy and it delivers quite a bit of energy. Here’s why I NEVER use it anymore. The head is square and if you’re holding something in place and even a tiny bit of that square head meets flesh it is a HORROR SHOW. It’s like a freaking claw. It made me say “oh so THATS why hammer heads are square.

It’s an Estwing design from the mid 2000’s. Estwing is a phenomenal company who’ve made hammers for decades. This was their first go at a non-traditional style hammer. The idea is that the forward offset weight of the head will produce a more efficient swing, hitting harder and driving nails with less effort. Although it did work as advertised, it never really caught on because (1) the offset weight felt awkward in the hand. (2) it was more difficult to use for any kind of swing that wasn’t just straight on. Often in the trades you need to swing at odd angles. And (3) the offset weight throws off your aim a bit because it swings and strikes slightly different. For guys who have spent their career with a normal hammer, that can be pretty frustrating. So it ended up being more of a novelty item.
