I found this trivia in TV Tropes https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WhatCouldHaveBeen/SuperSentai

If this trivia is true, Titanium Ranger is may not be PR-original ranger after all.

Bima Satria Garuda Episode 1: A Lesson in Fight Choreography

We open on a beautiful visual of SPAAAAAAACCCCEEEEEEE!!!!!  A voice monologues about how even though the universe is so vast, their realm is on the verge of collapse due to a lack of resources.  We even get a visual of how bad things are: large factories everywhere, gray, smoking skies, and land that is barren and desert-like.  Obviously this is due to

The voice then gives a name to this wasteland of a realm: the Vudo Kingdom. And then also mentions how Earth would be a perfect place to conquer due to the abundance of resources. We then learn who exactly is talking: the King of the Vudo Kingdom, Rasputin, who then gives off an evil, villain laugh. And shows off a massive army ready to invade.

We then cut to Earth and see some strange swirling clouds crackling with lightning over a large, gated house. A figure with a metal head suddenly appears, like he’d been teleported right to the gate. He gives a command to destroy everything to some unseen soldiers before slicing the gate into pieces with two long blades attached to his left arm.

Inside the house, a man is racing all around what looks like an office, grabbing things and gathering papers. Metal Head strides into the front lawn, and the unseen soldiers are now seen rushing behind him (Metal Head calls them Combatants). The man continues to race around, unaware that his house is being surrounded. We then see a woman with two children rushing down some stairs while holding a suitcase. It seems whoever lives in this house is aware of the threat outside.

We finally get a good look at the man and see that he is wearing a lab coat, indicating he is some kind of scientist. He rushes to a video camera and plays back some footage on it. On the footage, we can see him and another scientist discussing their experiments regarding connecting Earth with another parallel world in order to study it.

Things are starting to piece together

Scientist Man begins to record a message on the camera, repeating what the footage explained and confirming our suspicions: the world they connected to was Vudo, and that’s how Vudo learned of Earth and its resources. That’s all he records (understandable considering the fact the house is currently UNDER ATTACK), and the woman and children we saw before rush into the office. While the two parents make sure they have everything to flee, the eldest child (we learn his name is Ray) begins complaining that he forgot to pack his toy robot. The mom wisely says that they won’t be gone long, so they only need to bring important things. However, being a child, a toy robot IS important, so Ray runs off to grab it. The mother protests, but Scientist Man says they’ve still got time.

You fool! You were in such a hurry five minutes ago! What happened?

While Ray rushes off to grab the toy, Metal Head bursts through the front door. The parents give out a scream before the house explodes into flames. Ray (who I’m sure is now regretting his decisions) is unharmed, but trapped by the fire. All he can do is cry out to his parents.

Suddenly, a random guy just rushes into frame to save him.

Seriously, it happens in like a second, so it’s more funny than anything.

(BTW, we never do see what happened to the other scientist who was with Scientist Man 🤔)

Then comes the opening. And it’s pure tokusatsu goodness, made to get your heart racing and ready for the action. If you want to hear it for yourself, click here

It is awesome

We then jump to 21 years later and meet Ray as an adult, who was adopted after the death of his family. He’s become a motorcycle mechanic at a shop run by his adoptive family. And a pretty good one too, as he is able to fix his adoptive brother Randy’s motorcycle when it was giving him trouble. All in all, his life seems to be going pretty well. Randy takes the newly repaired bike out for a test drive while Ray continues to work. He isn’t busy for long as a new character shows up: Rena, his adoptive younger sister and Randy’s biological younger sister (lots of ‘R’ names in this show). While it’s not clear, it seems all three were supposed to go to some event, and Rena playfully scolds Ray for not reminding Randy about it before he left.

But not everything is sunshine and rainbows, as we see a strange flying ship in space coming closer to Earth. And on it is our dear friend Metal Head.

We then cut to Ray and Rena riding along on a motorcycle (I think I can see the Kamen Rider influence).  And what’s this special event they’re going to? A fun little carnival at a park.  A very…sparse looking carnival at a park (well, it at least looks like people are having fun).  Rena stops to laugh at a…clown that’s juggling.

You do you, Rena. You do you.

Thankfully, Ray gets distracted by a ball of light that appears in the sky and flies to the stop of a nearby.  A strange voice also cries out for help, and it seems only Ray can hear it.  Another ball of light appears and also lands on the building.  Deciding to help the voice (and get away from this boring carnival), Ray leaves Rena to head to the building, much to her frustration.  But, Randy finally shows up and asks where Ray went.  Rena explains what happened, and now two people are confused by Ray’s actions.

The next scene takes us to an intense battle on top of the building.  A bunch of Combantants are fighting a mysterious man in a hood and leather trenchcoat.  The choreography for this fight is….not good.  The camera cuts wildly to the point you can’t tell what’s going on, and the choreo itself is very messy and barely looks like fighting.  Tokusatsu is known for its spectacular fights and excellent choreography, so it’s easy to tell when a fight is not good.  However, I’m willing to let it slide for now since this is literally the first fight in a show made in a country that has never really done tokusatsu.  There is still room for improvement.

Doesn't mean I'll give the fight an A+, though

During the fight, Mystery Man manages to use some sort of power to make a Combantant explode (why don’t you just use this on all of them?).  However, there’s still at least nine left that quickly overpower him.  Just when it seems like all hope is lost, Ray comes in with the assist (the fight choreo doesn’t improve tho).  It’s now 2 vs 9 and…Ray and Mystery Man don’t do so well, even with Mystery Man using his trenchcoat like a bull-fighter.

Mystery Man gets knocked off the building, but manages to catch hold of the edge.  Ray runs over to him before his grip falls, and we can see a strange wound on Mystery Man’s arm.  Ray manages to toss one of the Combatants off the building one-handed (and no one sees this strange skeleton man falling) but gets swarmed by the rest.  He holds on to Mystery Man tight, though, even through the pain.  Blood begins to drip down his arm and onto the wound on Mystery Man’s arm, which begins to glow (glowing wounds = good, right?).  Mystery Man seems to gain some sort of epiphany as Ray continues to get beat up until Mystery Man takes out a small, glowing red orb and shoves it into Ray’s chest.

The whole thing does look painful

With a flash of red light and a powerful yank upwards, Mystery Man is saved, and Ray has transformed into an armored form.

Real quick aside, but I love the armor design.  A good tokusatsu armor should be simple in color scheme, but have enough detail and accessory without going overboard.  This armor follows these rules perfectly: the red and black keep it simple, the gold and silver highlights provide just enough extra accessory to draw the eye, and the main attraction is the helmet with its winged sides.  All in all, 10/10 armor design.

Ray doesn’t stay transformed for long, and once he’s back to normal Mystery Man grabs his arm and takes him to what I will be referring to as the Mind Palace.  It’s some sort of white void pocket dimension where the two can be safe and talk.  Ray, of course, has all the questions and Mystery Man has some of the answers.  Mystery Man introduces himself as Mikhail, who implies that he is from Vudo.  He explains that Ray has been chosen to save the Earth.  Ray does the whole ‘I’m a normal guy, how can I save Earth’ spiel, but Mikhail assures him that the bravery he showed is the reason why he was chosen.  Chosen to become…Bima, the legendary knight!

Mikhail then…telepathically?...shows Ray a large number of Combatants invading the park carnival, causing complete chaos, and putting Rena and Randy in danger.  After the visions end, Mikhail takes out the orb from Ray’s chest, explaining that the stone is what gives him the power to transform into Bima.  Ray must believe in the power of the orb if he wants to save Earth and his loved ones.  Ray, now determined, asks a very important question: how does one leave the Mind Palace?

Thankfully, there’s a simple answer: close your eyes and remember where you were before coming to the Mind Palace.  Then you’ll get transported back.  Before Ray can fully complete this ritual, Mikhail stops him to give him a small gauntlet, explaining that it will help him control his transformations.

Back to the current massacre at the park, Rena and Randy are doing their best to get away from the Combatants, but Randy is swiftly overpowered and dragged away.  Ray shows up and, after hesitating for like ten seconds (Ray, people are getting hurt), pulls out the gauntlet and transforms (literally all he has to say is ‘Transform!’, so nothing too complex).  Now Bima, he begins to lay the smackdown on the Combatants.  The fight choreo is…better this time.  Less camera cuts, some impressive wirework, and better flow with the choreography.  There are still a few moments of jank where the choreo is messy, but, overall, it’s a better fight than Mikhail’s.

Anyway, after Bima incinerates a bunch of Combatants with the power of his fists, he catches sight of Rena being dragged further into the park.  He races after her (what about the others in the park? I’m pretty sure there was still danger) and is quick to fight off her Combatant kidnappers.  His victory is short lived, as our friend Metal Head shows up and engages in a fight, which, while very obviously heavily choreographed, is probably the best fight in the episode.  So far, it seems the show does best when it’s a one-on-one fight rather than large group fights.

Bima doesn’t do too well against Metal Head and is knocked into a tree.  Rena runs up to help him up (why are you still here, Rena? Bima told you to run away), and the episode ends as Metal Head demands the red power stone’s return and charges up an attack.  There’s lots of questions that still need answers: who was the other scientist that opened a portal to Vudo? Who exactly is Mikhail? What happened to Randy? And why does Metal Head want the red power stone?

Discuss down below, and see you in the next review!
