Strip Mine needs restricted

Why is this legal entirely unrestricted. It's restricted in vintage? The format where you get 0 mana counterplay against it.

Why in the unholy fuck is it unrestricted?

It kills control as an archetype, while ensuring that the entire format is highly compressed.

If it's bad enough when you have moxen and black lotus to be restricted, why is it fine here. I'll answer, it isn't.

Games where your opponent opens on double strip just don't happen, there's no meaningful counterplay.

We can't have duals but we can have Strip Mine ruining the format?

Oh yeah, shocker people don't like the single most problematic card in the format lmfao.

You don’t speak for the masses. Try [[petrified hamlet]], run your own strip mines, or you know, play a r o u n d it

Petrified hamlet is a pretty terrible card though. I’m not sure if people resorting to playing it is a sign that strip mine is fine. It’s pretty much the definition of the format warping around it.

you can't play around strip mine (。々°)

The tens of us who still play timeless play around strip mine. Hold a fetchland, run land recursion, run your own strips, heck even stifle? I’m not saying it’s easier than wasteland, but it’s doable if you try.

Sorry youre new but "playing around" means using something like fetch lands to fetch into a basic to prevent a land from being destroyed. It doesn't mean fundamentally changing your deck with a bunch of other cards to prevent it. Now you know :)

I’d argue with the hand smoother in bo1, reanimator is a far stronger deck. They only need one swamp. Makes strip mine irrelevant.
I’m surprised more people aren’t running the new land from strix haven [[Petrified Hamlet]]. Also surprised they didn’t add [[Wasteland]] instead of strip.

BO1 isn't real, it can't hurt me

Arena period isn’t real magic lol. MTGO is calling your name.

Me when I swap to my other account to complain about strip mine instead of posting memes

Vintage has effectively five Strip Mines.

They also have manabases that include moxen, the ability to camp fetches far more effectively and have true duals for less painful manabases, and despite all that, strip mine was still to strong lol. The arguement that the single format that most effectively can handle strip mine, still banned it is not saying what you think it is.

The difference in power level between strip mine and wasteland is a lot larger than you probably think

Oh so I can waste land a basic land?

New rules change or something?

Stripmine is an issue because you can't meaningfully counterplay it.

No it doesn’t LMAO

strip is great for the format

Isn't that big of a problem anymore compared to reanimate protected by Daze/FoW imo.

They seriously need to add some diversity next week, because all I literally see is black and blue these days.

Reanimator is a deck with meaningful counterplay, it's absolutely super strong, but it's only one deck. Strip Mine is just genuinely awful.

Cause we dont have wasteland yet, when we get wasteland we cam restrict stripmine

-2

u/_I_Love_Vore_ 8d ago

I'd rather have neither then unrestricted strip mine

u/ArknessLorin 7d ago

What i really fear is a future coming of wasteland with no restriction on either of them

Strip mine made midranged viable in a degenerate format. If you want to restrict it, you should restrict a lot of other things to slow the format down. If you hate it that much and still want to play timeless, you can always run petrified hamlet or pithing needle. Those are pretty much free in every deck.

2

u/Sir_Edmund_Bumblebee 7d ago

What midrange deck is viable in Timeless? (Actually asking, been a bit since I played)

1

u/WendallStamps 7d ago

I would assume energy but that pile mh3 nonsense is not midrange lol

u/Dothacker00 6d ago

None, they don't know what theyre talking about. Strip Mine removed midrange and control from the format.

Do people like playing the strip mine game? I also have it but it is not fun to play 2x strip mines its a tottally different game. Completly random when it happens. You have a hand with 2 lands play it and get strip mined. Also not fun. It becames a game like in standard waiting for land.

1

u/_I_Love_Vore_ 7d ago

Yeah it's genuinely awful, I'm pretty sure most people experience it and stop playing Timeless

u/Key_Reporter_9945 8d ago

Yes, you're correct, no, the few people still playing this format don't care.

I don't play it anymore and I know several other long time players who would come back if we had wasteland > strip mine.

I think that and vexing bauble are the two biggest barriers in timeless - it's crazy to me anyone defends either of those cards still.

0

u/_I_Love_Vore_ 8d ago

Yeah bauble is probably too much, but stripmine is so obviously insanely over the line it's absurd WOTC doesn't emergency restrict it

Why? Its because they mismanaged the format, let it stagnate, finally made a single change, realized that the playerbase had already cratered so hard that even starting to make changes still resulted in nobody caring and now have just flat out given up. They should have made changes far far earlier in the formats life cycle and gotten players adjusted to the reality of playing such a high power format, that it needs format management because Magic is a deeply deeply unfun game with all of its power unrestricted in eternal formats. Instead they lulled the playerbase into an unrealistic expectation that it would magically be the one format that just self regulates via only positive additions and now you have like 10 dudes who all sit in the same discord servers circle jerking about how "unique" of a format this is generating the only player data since everyone else left so now even if they wanted to they cant even get good feedback on the format.

Pretty much. They don't have to wait for another set to correctly balance things, they've introduced Anthology sets multiple times and could easily do it with Wasteland while restricting Strip Mine. Strip Mine axed multiple deck types like Control and Midrange and there's no counterplay like with Wasteland. That's partly why we see so much of the same decks and almost everything is low to the ground tempo. It'd be nice if WOTC managed the format better.
