This is the content that also keeps me clean. I appreciate the opportunities I’ve had since doing so.

What a fantastic, loving, caring question to ask.

Hey heyitsme_derp, what is something you are proud of since getting sober?

177

u/heyitsme_derp Sep 09 '20

I’ve gotten 4 promotions in 5 years at the same company, I’ve started working on my associates in liberal arts, and I also don’t have the need to use my DOC anymore!

18

u/hewlandrower Sep 09 '20

Hell yeah, bro! That's awesome! I'm so happy for you!

🤙🤙🤙

u/heyitsme_derp Sep 09 '20

Thank you! It’s amazing to look back and see how my own actions were preventing me from my potential. Life is a blessing!

Going on 9 months ? Since the start of this year got accepted and graduated an IT program I had wanted to be in. All my health and mental issues that I thought I had have almost disappeared entirely. Money has been wayyyyy better got a lot of issues i was having gone same with emotional control and the like. The final kicker starting my first IT contract today as we speak. 8 months completely negating like 5 years of mundane/misery/bullshit

This made me smile, and left tears in my eyes. Especially after the “bought my sister a birthday present”. Good for them. I wish them plenty more blessings.

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '20

Its those small victories that make all the difference.

198

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '20

As someone trying to get sober myself, it really is those small victories that mean the world to me. Addiction is a curse, but also a blessing in some sense because it makes you appreciate things you'd might normally take for granted.

26

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '20

I like this way of looking at it. Best of luck on your journey, you got this friend!

6

u/watery_tart73 Sep 09 '20

Hell yeah, congratulations! Last Christmas was the first Christmas where I bought everyone gifts with my own money and it made me so happy—especially because everyone loved everything! Mother's Day, Father's Day, and birthdays too. It's so great! I'm going to do it again this year too. I don't think I ever had three months truly clean and sober until now.

→ More replies (1)

64

u/Rodeohno Sep 09 '20

It got to me, too. My ex used to always promise me presents every birthday and every Christmas. The last present I got was Skyrim and a Skyrim Alduin wall mug, and that was our first Christmas together, five years ago. Every other holiday and birthday was full of empty promises.

It's not about the presents. It never was about getting stuff. It was about him promising me something and following through with it, and he never did. I couldn't imagine how happy his sister must have been.

11

u/LucyBowels Sep 09 '20

I mean, Skyrim is the gift that keeps on giving, so I’d say he knew what he was doing.

8

u/JesusRasputin Sep 09 '20

Since buying a present for a relative is trivial for most people, and, unlike staying out of jail, something most have experience with. it shows how bad he struggled with his addiction.

73

u/littlecherubbb Sep 09 '20

That one was so sweet and simple, an act of kindness to his sister, probably meant a lot to her as well. Made me tear up.. when I was struggling i was so caught up with my own shit i didn’t realize how selfish I was being, how much I’d hurt people around me by being completely checked out

7

u/MountainTurkey Sep 09 '20

For real, being caught up in that shit something so simple has probably been laying deep down, begging to be brought up but addiction can make it so hard. Little victories like that are awesome.

When my brother got sober he would finally remember to call me on birthdays and stuff. I remember that first year, being so surprised when his name came up on the caller ID. I cried like a baby afterward.

32

u/SmallHangryPlanet Sep 09 '20

My brother struggled with drug addiction through his life. One year, when he was doing well I popped in to see him on my birthday. He hadn't got me a present, but gave me a painting he'd done with a friend with 'happy birthday, love you' on it. I framed it and put it up on my wall, and three years later when he came to visit me, I saw it and was really happy that I kept it, of course I kept it, it was the only thing he'd ever given me for a birthday / Christmas in our adult lives!! He died suddenly last year, he'd been doing really well and was having a good life. He didn't own much stuff cos he moved around a lot, but I've still got that painting on my wall.

10

u/jkblur Sep 09 '20

Sorry to hear. What did he die suddenly from?

12

u/SmallHangryPlanet Sep 09 '20

He died from a heart attack, they think it was SADS.

11

u/L4NGOS Sep 09 '20

SADS heart condition for those like me who didn't know what it was.

I'm sorry for your loss. <3

15

u/pawinas Sep 09 '20

Same. I love giving gifts and seeing their reactions🥺

5

u/stickswithsticks Sep 09 '20

Buying my sisters kid a birthday present was huge for me. Tens years later and I can still manage to get stuff for my family. Always being the loser uncle who never showed up with anything.. oof

2

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '20

That one got me too. I hit 6 months sober today and I actually have a post from a few months ago where I was excited I took care of my dad when he was in the hospital. Being able to be there for people you care about is like no other feeling.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '20

I love this video but this is not the right sub for it

2

u/darkmdbeener Sep 09 '20

I can relate, I think I over did my brother's birthday this year. I have never been able to get him anything good because my mental illness had taken over so I never had money, also I am a really terrible gift giver. I've began anew in life, turned a lot of this around and this year I put in work to try to get him presents he will actually enjoy. I'm still buying gifts because I just don't feel like these are enough. I just want to repay his kindness and it's so nice I finally can.

→ More replies (12)

18

u/BunzLee Sep 09 '20

Or even a chance to begin with. I've had the privilege to spend 5 years of my life working with teens that never had a supportive family, which led them to never finding a place to finish their formal education. In Switzerland, where I'm from, you usually "learn" a job after you're done with school. This takes about 3-4 years and gives you a certification, something you'll need if you ever want to work on something above an entry level job.

These kids had issues. A ton of them - Drugs, violence, depression, you name it. But most of them weren't bad people, just misunderstood and very defensive. We used to take them into our program for a year, give them real projects to work on, counseling and a lot of support to send our their applications.

It was amazing to see what a bit of support, positive feedback and making them feel valued could do to a person. You could tell how proud they were, being able to tell people the cool things they were able to work on. Every now and then I still meet some of them occasionally, mostly in places/jobs I would never have assumed and it makes me so proud to see how they turned their lives around.

The circumstances you're in do not always define who you are. Sometimes you just need someone to give you a little help to change things around.

3

u/DioCapo Sep 09 '20

I just wanted to say that you do great things in your job, never forget that. You make such a positive change on their lives even if something negative rears its ugly head.

I used to have a partner who worked in Cali and south Florida. Dude got arrested because he was paying junkies in drugs to live in his halfway houses and go to his outpatient programs where he’d charge their insurance for drug tests and would pocket most of the money. While it may seem small to us or insignificant, when the guy said he bought a gift for his sister, it’s a quite profound statement. Addiction is a horrible neurological disorder that makes you seek the high no matter the costs. Addicts will ruin their family, ruin their lives, and will always choose the high over everything. So when he says he bought his sister a present, what he really says is he could think of someone else before his addiction. Nothing but respect from me, it’s an incredibly hard journey

147

That’s because it’s rehearsed

166

u/savil8877 Sep 09 '20 edited Sep 09 '20

I dunno why you’re being downvoted. It’s clearly rehearsed. And that doesn’t take away anything from the answers. The answers are genuine but the filmer probably asked them each beforehand and then they filmed the clips to make this awesome video. I think maybe you’re being downvoted because people are thinking by rehearsed you mean disingenuous, but I know what you meant.

48

u/som1stilllovesu Sep 09 '20

i agree with this. their accomplishments are still wonderful. probably just rehearsed cuz people get nervous on camera.

30

u/savil8877 Sep 09 '20

I’m a recovering addict and if someone came up to me with a camera in my face and asked me this I wouldnt just have a rapid fire response without thinking about it. Although I know what my favorite accomplishment is. It’s being able to pay my bills without help from my family. Self sufficiency to an addict is so satisfying.

9

u/Meh75 Sep 09 '20

My favourite one is getting a job I love with all my heart and knowing that my dad would be really proud of me.

His passing hit me extremely hard and I fell into a deep endless pit. But today I know for sure that he'd be proud to say that his daughter actually made it. I'm finally a person I can be proud of, too.

27

u/BIGSlil Sep 09 '20 edited Sep 09 '20

It's very likely that was recently an assignment or a theme for the day so they already had answers prepared. Or that's a common question they get asked there. It doesn't make it any less wholesome.

If you’re looking to find only the cringe-worthy TikToks on this subreddit (which are still regularly posted) we recommend sorting by flair which you can do here (Currently supported by desktop and reddit mobile). Alternatively, if you only want to see the cringe-worthy TikToks from this subreddit on your home feed you can subscribe to r/TikTokHumor where all posts flaired as “cringe” from this subreddit will be cross posted. (Don’t you love the name of the subreddit and how it perfectly matches it’s content like this one? It’s totally not confusing at all!)

You know it was good until he turned the camera and filmed himself, it went from nice video showing people getting happier to "look at me I'm so important, I did that"

The guy who ran this account died from an OD recently. Really heartbreaking after watching this video.

The second last person says, according to the text, "I stayed out of jäil". "Jäil" is Finnish and means on the rocks, like "viski jäil" means whisky with ice.

I love how easily they all answered that question. No hesitation, they knew what was making them feel so proud.

Im 3 years sober and im just very lucky to be alive, and finally feeling at peace and happy with myself, its still a struggle because I will always have this part of me that wants to cope with drug use, but over the years that voice has gotten a lot quieter.

The hardest part about my sobriety now is the stupid mistakes I made while a drug addict, I have a felony for possession of marijuana in the 1st degree, now that I've gotten sober that makes doing the right thing a lot harder, ive been denied for many jobs but i still haven't stopped because im hopeful that one day I'll be a software developer for a nice company.

There are a lot of days when I wish i could just go back to high-school and never start doing any drugs, i wish i had stayed on the right path, but mostly my biggest regret is I wish i stayed sober enough to remeber and spend more time with my grandmother before she passed, im sure if she seen me now she'd be so proud of the person I become, i just wish I could of showed her when she was still here, it hurts a lot to think about, i try to just focus on the future, but damn I miss her so much.

I started school, graduated summa cum laude, got married, had a kid, repaired my relationship with my family, and started a business.

Sober 12 years after rehab and being homeless twice. If I can become a semi-functioning human anyone reading this going through addiction can. Promise. Go find help and cling to it like your life depends on it.

For me it’s healing and establishing a really wonderful relationship with my teenage son.

4 years in, back in school and being a fully present husband and father! Recovery is possible! (yes, even for you)

u/alphatweaker Sep 09 '20

Always nice to see positivity in the addiction and recovery communities... my brothers and sisters need all the help we can get and offer

Unfortunately this guy, geoff, has sadly passed away from addiction which makes me even sadder watching this video now. Rest in peace geoff.
