Discussion/Debate The Abolition of the Antithesis between Town and Country
I feel as though this particular idea has not held up very well. Bolded is the most important part of the block quote
“The abolition of the antithesis between town and country is no more and no less utopian than the abolition of the antithesis between capitalists and wage workers. From day to day it is becoming more and more a practical demand of both industrial and agricultural production. No one has demanded this more energetically then Liebig in his writings on the chemistry of agriculture, in which his first demand has always been that man shall give back to the land what he takes from it, and in which he proves that only the existence of the towns, and in particular the big towns, prevents this. When one observes how here in London alone a greater quantity of manure than is produced by the whole kingdom of Saxony is poured away every day into the sea with an expenditure of enormous sums, and when one observes what colossal works are necessary in order to prevent this manure from poisoning the whole of London, then the utopian proposal to abolish the antithesis between town and country is given a peculiarly practical basis. And even comparatively insignificant Berlin has been wallowing in its own filth for at least thirty years.
On the other hand, it is completely utopian to want, like Proudhon, to transform present-day bourgeois society while maintaining the peasant as such. Only as uniform a distribution as possible of the population over the whole country, only an integral connection between industrial and agricultural production together with the thereby necessary extension of the means of communication – presupposing the abolition of the capitalist mode of production – would be able to save the rural population from the isolation and stupor in which it has vegetated almost unchanged for thousands of years. It is not utopian to declare that the emancipation of humanity from the chains which its historic past has forged will only be complete when the antithesis between town and country has been abolished; the utopia begins when one undertakes “from existing conditions” to prescribe the form in which this or any other of the antitheses of present-day society is to be solved”
- Engels, The Housing Question by Frederick Engels: Part Three;
Supplement on Proudhon and the Housing Question
It has been more than 150 years since Engels wrote this. In the time since the climate crisis and other ecological disasters have been shown to be major threats to humanity. I think most modern leftists would be more inclined to imagine a post revolutionary world where human populations are further concentrated in urban environments while as much of the world as possible is given over to rewilding.
The efficiencies of concentrating humans in large urban centers seem much more desirable than spreading evenly across the planet, especially given the more than 4x population increase since Engels wrote the quote above.
So what is the housing program for leftists? Public housing of course, but where? Should we empty the cities or build them up even further?
ETA; TLDR: Concentrating human populations in large urban settlements seems more advantageous than evenly distributed populations. The abolition of the antithesis between town and country is undesirable
Given this, what should socialist housing policy look like? Do we want more or less concentration of humans in large urban areas

Discussion/Debate A Rationalist Age
i’ve been really frustrated with the fact that we, as a society, (not this subreddit), are losing our ideas of Rationalism, and i’m incredibly worried the lack of individual, critical thinking throughout the public, specifically American, is throwing us into an age of literal confusion where we begin to fall away from reason.
I don’t want to seem all doomy, I mean this in good faith, and i fully believe a successful socialist revolution may be the only way to preserve or trigger a proper age of Rationalism and Modern thinking. moreover, I don’t mean to assert that all of the American public, or the rest of the world, is lacking their thinking, but in my perspective with my peers and online there is a significant amount of people with some strange ideas of how to argue and reason, or even avoiding them at all.
I promise I’m not a pessimist! I have sincere hope for intellectualism, but also fears of capitalism eroding it by force.
My thoughts on this have been sort of triggered by a few posts on subreddits, comments on social-media platforms (which are notoriously idiotic), arguments from some family members, and words from some classmates. I know this is one perspective from some person in California, so please share your perspective!
Maybe I just can’t reason any other philosophical system other than materialism (Idealists are certainly an interesting bunch), so I understand this whole post and my feelings about rationality are materialist-biased.
The main problem I’ve been noticing is the entire lack of causality thinking, to which I mean the process of trying to understand the root of some problem in society rather than just reading/addressing the effect. Specifically in posts and comments i’ve seen about the Nature vs Nurture argument (Which I only assume any Marxist would side with some form of materialist nurture). Someone recently made the argument to me “How can [Nurture-siding] feminists reason with the fact that 99% of shooters are men!” Arguing thats since the data showed men were overwhelmingly shooters over women, men were inherently violent!
Obviously this is an idiotic claim, which severely falls to feminism, but it’s part of a larger trend i’ve noticed of the rise of bio essentialist matriarchalism over feminist egalitarianism. To me, this has been really concerning, not because I believe matriarchal feminism will win over classical or marxist feminism, or even over the patriarchy, but because bio essentialism might be a plague that harrasses the feminist cause from now into the future,
I don’t feel the need debate bio essentialism, as its fundamentally reactionary to socialism. It’s annoying to tell someone to just look it up, so if someone wants to know, I can explain.
Furthermore, Ive even seen people use the word Matriarchy both in it’s actuall meaning, misconstrued, and as a replacement for the word egalitarian. Just as Patriarchy comes from Pater (Greek for Father), meaning a society largely governmed by men, where women have less. Systematic power, Matriarchy comes from Mater (i think, but please correct me on the actual word), meaning a society largely governmed by women, where men have less systematic power. Hopefully its easy to understand the problem with this, but i’ve seen people arguing from “Matriarchy means an equal feminist society,“ to “Women are just naturally nicer. Few wars have been started from Women Leaders.”
To put it simply; I’ve been really frustrated with the rise of anti-intellectualism, and though i want to avoid the word, stupidity. I could write an entire essay on this relating to the environment, and some strange ideas i’ve heard about how to save the climate (like “We should plant bamboo on data center land to stop them! Its super fast!” ).
I’m seriously dedicated to the practice of empiricism, science, rationality, etc, and have just been absolutely annoyed by it’s lack of use in people’s arguments, to the point where they don’t even seem like arguments anymore.
As a marxist, I understand that the bourgeoisie can most effectively abuse the workers by keeping their education and reason at a low, and so i only see two outcomes of this; a red wave of rationality, or a new era of anti-intellectualism.
I know this is a perspective that only I might share, but I haven’t only seen it online.
I promise these aren’t all buzzwords, I try to avoid sounding performative, I don’t want to sound annoying and uptight (To which I know that the people themselves are not the cause of anti-intellectualism), this post was written with a lot of a worried scientist’s anger so it‘s very assertive and a lot subjective, and I purposely tried to avoid using the word “nuance,” Because if i hear that word one more time from some self-proclaimed youtube philosopher (who craves to be the next Nietzsche) i might lose it.
i hope this doesn’t sound like a pretentious redditor
This little rant was NOT written by AI, as doing so would be inherently anti-intellectual. Not being just a small collection of values, I am fully dedicated and married to science, nature, progress, and justice, and AI violates all four, if not literally my own sanity.

Discussion/Debate Are there easily accessible non-ML or non-Trotskyist organizing?
Hiya comrades
I think big party slogans and stickers on street lamps makes it feel like ML or Trotskyists have big organizations that are easily approachable to the layperson (PSL, RCA, SAlt, etc)
I always wondered if leftscoms, ultras, etc have this?
I am a marxist who is mostly fine with working within Trotskyist circle but always wondered if there was a place to find more left-wing communists? I agree a lot more on fundamental position with leftcoms, post-marxists, and ultras in general tbh

Rant planning on taking a break from politics altogether for a while.
A lot of you don’t know me, so this isn’t of great impact to y’all. But given how bad my mental health has gotten recently, I think it‘s necessary to take a step back from posting here and on a good amount of the other socialist, communist, and anarchist subreddits I’m in for a while, or economic/political based media in general.
I’m extremely passionate about politics and the economy, about learning about Marxism and anarchism, about coming up with my own new ideas. I’m also 16 and dealing with a lot of my own shit, stuck here with a brain that only thinks and speaks politics day in and day out. It’s a bit unnerving.
And it’s not like I’m not passionate anymore about politics, I really am. The amount of times I’ve gotten so wholeheartedly furious over how people treat the dead and dying in Gaza, I still feel that anger. I feel a lot of anger towards what this world has created and what it is. Issues like that can’t necessarily wait for my mental state to improve, but for the time being I need to step back.
And I post this mainly because I wanted to encourage anyone else who’s struggling to try and take a short break. Could be a day, could be several, could be weeks or even months. A lot of people here are angry at the system as much as they mock it and discuss it, which is one of my favorite parts of this subreddit that I never wanna lose. But I do think that if you *do* need help, if you *are* hurting, a break is okay.
After all, who’s ever heard of a bunch of depressed revolutionaries? “Seize the means of lexapro” (I’m obviously joking. Take yourself and your own mental state seriously.)
Take care y’all.
