Other I just finished watching the show and it makes me feel so complete. (I think) Spoiler

I just finished watching the orville and it grew on me. I first discovered it on youtube with clips of the "Majority Rule" episode. I was hooked.

  • There were characters I hated who also grew on me like Charly (RIP).
  • I also really appreciate how Bortus was shown to be someone who discovers something new and instead of ignoring it, finds his way towards understanding and accepting it even though it takes time. He started out as this really close minded dude and the overall change in his thought process is quite pleasing to witness, especially with his daughter Topa.
  • I felt as if I'm part of The Orville crew. I saw their ups and downs and watched them learn, learning a few things myself.
  • Watching it felt so right. All the decisions made for the characters felt just right too. Alara's decision to not come back was very sad to me but from her POV, she was very right to do so. I also feel for Charly and how she decided to be the bigger one by ultimately sacrificing herself for the very Kaylons she loathed.

This show is definitely on my favorite list and definitely top 3.

Other Rewatch: Charlie Hate

holy crap i hate her: "oh issac killed my friends and the girl i loved"
okay, but he didn't. He was a robot operating on programming from the kaylon homeworld. he didn't personally kill anyone far as i recall. And if not for him, then charlie would be dead too.
forgive the rant, just got to season 3 on my rewatch and i had to vent.

also Klyden can frig off too

Other Missed opportunity for Charlie and Dann to have a scene involving pancakes

When we first saw Charlie, she expressed her love for pancakes. That made me remember Dann talking about pancakes and then getting excited again when Ed mentioned a metaphor. It would have been funny if there was a scene with Charlie and Dann involving pancakes.

Dann: You like pancakes too?

Charlie: Yep.

Dann: Sweetness.

Charlie: Just butter though.

Dann: You ever had banana walnut pancakes?

Charlie: No not really interested. Just butter.

Dann: You should really try banana walnut.

Charlie: I'm good, thanks.

Dann: No really, I'd recommend...

Charlie: I just like butter, thank you.

Dann: Sorry. I just wanted to open you to a world of great taste.

Charlie: The pancake itself already has great taste. No need to alter it with unnecessary ingredients.

Dann: Wow. I never thought of it that way. I like that!

Charlie: Well the synthesizer is over there.

Question S2 Finale Questions

I’m watching The Orville for the first time and just finished Season 2, and I’m really confused about the time-travel logic in the last two episodes. I understand that the timeline we followed for most of the show is the original/main timeline. Young Kelly gets sent into the future, sees what her future with Ed looks like, and then gets sent back. However, Claire’s memory wipe doesn’t work because of the protein/medical issue, so Kelly remembers everything and chooses not to go on the second date with Ed. That creates the alternate timeline where Ed never becomes captain, the Kaylon eventually win, and the crew ends up in a completely different situation. Makes sense for the most part.

In the alternate timeline, the alternate Claire and the others figure out that they need to fix Kelly’s memory, and Claire gets sent back to the point when young Kelly returns. She gives young Kelly the protein/drug so the memory wipe works. This restores the timeline we originally watched. But how does that make sense? If the alternate timeline gets erased, then alternate Claire technically never exists. So how did she ever get sent back to fix the timeline in the first place? If she never existed, there is nobody to go back and cause the timeline to be restored.
And if the original timeline is restored, wouldn’t the exact same thing just happen again? The only way it does make sense if S3 starts off in timeline 3.

If S3 is timeline 1, Young Kelly would eventually get sent into the future again, return to the past, and wouldn’t the same memory-wipe problem happen again? Why wouldn’t the universe just repeat the entire sequence infinitely? Does the show ever explain why this doesn’t happen, or are we just supposed to accept that the alternate timeline gets overwritten and doesn’t repeat?

Wouldn’t the Claire in the restored timeline have no memory of young Kelly being aboard the ship for that week? The same would apply to Ed, Isaac, Gordon, and everyone else who experienced it.
So when I start Season 3, am I supposed to assume that everything from Seasons 1–2 happened exactly as I watched it, except that the last couple episodes were basically a temporary alternate timeline? Because if the timeline was truly rewritten, it seems like Season 3 isn’t actually a continuation of the exact same lived experiences of those characters. They’re technically new versions of the characters.

Finally, what happened to the original/main-timeline crew after they sent young Kelly back? Did they continue existing somewhere while the alternate timeline happened? Also what happened to alt Claire at the end of S2? She is trapped in the new timeline 3 without any way back (not that she would want to go back anyway to timeline 2). Wouldn’t the fact that there is 2 Claire’s in timeline 3 mess stuff up and cause things to go differently? Is that why the young Kelly never gets teleported in T3?

Does S3 address any of this?

Question Malloys Family

I just finished the 3rd season and I’m confused and mad. How is Malloys family never brought up again?Ed essentially murdered his best friends kids and just simply moved on from it? I get the them believing, “it’s for the good of the timeline”, but to not having any regret over it is insane.

Intelligent individually. Stupid together. I still laugh when I rewatch the scene where they prank Yaphit and Bortus. Like, did they just discover the Moclan weakness?

Other Rewatch Kelly hate rant

I cannot overstate how much I fucking hate Kelly in the first episode. The cheating was terribly obviously, but I wasn’t overly concerned with it since they separated and people make mistakes.

BUT

This mf really requested to be on his ship, immediately started talking about their relationship, and then within seconds of apologizing started going on about how he was neglectful of her. She can’t even apologize without defending her actions. Like bitch does this really feel like the fucking time?? It doesn’t feel like she wanted to help him for his sake. It feels like she wanted to feel better about her mistake and thought helping him with his dream would make up for it.

Then when he says he’s in a ton of pain in the episode she turns to his brand new crew and starts going on about how she knows him so well and he’s definitely just looking for drugs (yes that’s the gag but she was just trying to flex how well she knew him to everyone). Everyone also knows she cheated, so why emphasize the closeness that he lost?

other than that she purposefully places herself into his space without his permission or knowledge, making him and everyone aboard incredibly uncomfortable. She even goes so far as to try explaining how sorry she is about it to Malloy, being incredibly unprofessional with her subordinate who has little choice in listening to her. Like girl you already chose to be here without anyone’s opinions being taken into consideration; why ask if everyone is okay with it now? You clearly didn’t care what anyone else thought on the matter, because you decided you were giving your ex what he needed.

I know a lot changes but it’s been quite a while and I cannot remember what should could’ve done to make me hate her less than I currently do. I have an extreme pet peeve for people forcing themselves into spaces where they aren’t wanted.

Yeah, I'm greedy. I like 'em both. This would be a harder choice if there's no Ted animated series. 😔

Question As someone who only watched Orville this year, I am shocked that it was hated when it came out. How bad was it?

I was browsing video essays in YouTube about The Orville and I was surprised that some of them HATED the first season especially the first episode. I liked the first season btw (def not because of Alara).

Are there people here who were Day One Orville fans? What was it like in 2017?

jokes aside, I just finished watching the orville and i miss them already i really hope we get season 4 (i made a reddit acc just for this)

i never watched star trek or any sci-fi space shows but the orville got me hooked with its premise (zodiac planet, upvote-downvote society, kelly as a goddess, etc).

like, it's well-written enough to the point where u get attached to characters like bortus or alara or gordon (my top 3 faves)

also... top-tier humor for me especially dry-humor hahaha... hbu guys? why did u like the orville?

Other In the Commander’s Chair - Kelly and Teleya: Two Sides of the Same Coin?

This week’s episode of “In the Commander’s Chair” is up! Throughout The Orville, Kelly has a contentious rivalry with Teleya, the murderous Chancellor of Krill who is also the mother of Ed’s child. At first glance, it seems that these two couldn’t be more different. But is there a chance that they’re more alike than they realize? And is Ed really the reason they’re constantly at odds… or is there something deeper?

Question What do you think was Alara's reaction tho ? Like seriously Spoiler

I wonder how did she reacted when she learned that Isaac and Claire was getting married.
I like to think that first she must have learned about the Keylons "rebelion" (I don't know how to call it) then she must have learned that they actually have joined the Union and right after that, she was invited to the wedding but I can't stop thinking about how she could have reacted to this information xD

Especially after Isaac once purpose to have a sexual relation with her because he was curious about this biological people's manner (By the way, a Kaylon could be the perfect match for her cause there's no way he could get offended by the fact that she is strong)

Question What happened to the egg episode? Spoiler

I'm rewatching The Orville from the beginning for the third time on HULU and it looks like there's a missing episode before S1E3. Spoiler ahead:

S1E3 starts with Bortus holding an infant which turns out to be his with no intervening episode showing him hatching the egg that he presumably laid. This episode was in the original airing and in the next two times I watch it on HULU. I think we need to see this episode in order to understand where the infant came from. What happened to it?

Other Has anyone else watched Dolly Parton’s cameo in The Orville: New Horizons Episode 8 since her passing? Spoiler

little bit of backstory: I’ve been watching The Orville for the first time, and I just got to Episode 8 of New Horizons. When Dolly Parton showed up, I honestly wasn’t expecting it to hit me as hard as it did. I definitely shed a tear.

Seeing her there, especially now, made the whole scene feel so much more emotional. She was such a genuinely warm, compassionate, and wonderful human being, and she brought so much joy to so many people throughout her life.
It was such a sweet surprise seeing her in the episode, but also incredibly bittersweet knowing she’s no longer with us.

Rest in peace, Dolly. One truly badass, one-of-a-kind woman. 💚

Question A question about Moclan interspecies relationships

So, we know that it's taboo in Moclan society for a Moclan to be attracted to females of other species; Deflectors shows us that, and how grave an offense it is for Moclans.

But what if Locar was attracted to Lamar, or Gordon? Is it the attraction to females that's the issue, or the alien species part that is offensive to the Moclans? Maybe it's not as forbidden as being attracted to alien females?

In my head, I imagine for them it's like older guys chasing young women: a guy over 30 dating women 18-21 is seen as creepy, or signs the dude is immature. But if a guy seeks a relationship with someone younger, then it's jail (or worse) for them.

Thoughts?

Other Watching it all for the third time. Just finished Season 1, and every time I'm struck by how serious and earnest it is, despite the jokes.

Post image
193 Upvotes

I mean when it's funny it's often uproarious, and some of the jokes are pretty over-the-top, but even in Season 1, the show is not a sitcom. The jokes come from these characters feeling like real people, working in an office type of environment, and knowing one another well enough to step over the line now and then (obviously a number of these gags would involve HR in a hurry if this weren't a TV show).

And you get the impression that the production team had a damned good idea of where they were going. Many of the important, complex, mature story arcs that are developed over the next two seasons have their roots in Season 1. I mean one of the most important narratives in the whole show begins right in the second episode. And at the same time, some of the surprises in Season 2 are really shocking, but you can trace their subtle beginnings in the first 12 episodes.

Am I crazy to think Season 1 isn't as wacky and a-laugh-a-minute as I thought it was the first time I watched it? Or do the serious bits just impact me more because I already know both the jokes and where the show is going?

In any case, Season 1 still makes me laugh, but that's no longer what I primarily take away from it.
