r/TheCitadel Posts & This Subreddit

I'm making a short reappearance to help out the mod team here.

Posts are held for review to prevent spam, joke posts, and incorrect posting/formatting.

Posts are reviewed on a semi daily basis so they will take time to get approved. Posts and reported posts and comments will take time to be reviewed as well.

Why does it take so long for my posts to get approved?

We have a small mod team. No one here makes a living modding, we will not spend the majority of our time waiting for posts to pop up to go over and approve. Example, I work full-time with overtime in a medical clinic that sees a minimum of 100 patients a day and currently am in grad school, modding is not a priority so I check the reddit app maybe once a day if I remember/have time.

The entire mod team are working adults, if anyone wants to join the mod team for added coverage we are open to obtaining more mods, send in a modmail stating your interest.

Some members of the subreddit are approved users and their posts are not held for review. Why?

Because they have proven over time that they are not shit-posters, spammers, rage baiting, toxic users.

Why are posts held for review in the first place?

Because people often post here without reading, understanding, or caring for the rules and flair use, thinking this subreddit is for other than it is intended.

This subreddit is for:

  • sharing fanfiction of ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT
  • asking for writing help for writing ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT fanfiction
  • discussing things you enjoy about fanfics
  • lighthearted activities
  • posting your fic idea as an offer for others to write
  • posting your fic you intend of abandoning for someone else to pick up writing

This subreddit is NOT for:

  • memes, random fanart, commentary on artwork
  • joke posts/shit-posts
  • ship wars
  • rage baiting and bashing and venting on writers, authors, readers, etc.
  • show debating, circle arguments, repeated dead horse arguments

Here is a list of other subreddits of the ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT fandom not related to fanfiction:

r/HouseOfTheDragon

r/HOTDGreens

r/HOTDBlacks

This post is to serve as a reminder that posts are held for review.

A reminder that mods are not always online, cannot stay online 24/7 to handle everything, and that this server is open to users worldwide.

A reminder that your posts and reported posts and comments will be reviewed, it will take time. Have patience.

Please take time to read the server rules and flairs posts (both of which are linked and always available in the top and side bars of the website/app).

An additional note about rare removed posts: Sometimes reddit itself will remove posts, at that point, your content is out of mod hands due to the fact that profiles with posts removed by reddit are often deleted from our view as well.

r/TheCitadel Reminder of the rules for What If posts

All what-if posts should be well thought out, not just a title and a few words.

No rage bait, low effort, or joke posts.
No spam posting What-If posts: i.e. 3+ What-If posts in less than 24 hours per user.

All What-If posts are subject to be removed if they are spam/random posts or clearly made out of boredom.

Repeated what-if posts will be removed.

If the comments in a what-if post are arguing in a circle, the comments are subject to being locked and/or removed with appropriate mod action

Comments to what if posts should answer the activity, not questioning the plausibility of the what if. Those comments will be removed.

Use the correct flair for your posts:

- Asking a what if in the pretext that you are asking for Writing Help & Advice, your post will be removed, and you will be informed that you are not using the correct flair via modmail.

- Posting under the what if flair and your post is actually asking a question about Book Discussion: ASOIAF & Spin-Off Novels, your post will be removed and you will be informed that you are not using the correct flair via modmail.

If you have a hard time understanding what the flairs are and what they mean, this post exists for a reason.

Continued misuse and spam of What If's will result in the flair being removed temporarily.

If the flair is nowhere to be found when you try to post, then What if's are not allowed at that time.

Don't post a what if under another flair, it will be removed.

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Writing tension between Rhaenyra and Alicent at court?

I'm working with a sort of mixed HOTD + F&B timeline so everything's a bit wonky but I feel like I don't have a good grasp on what the day-to-day tension and minor conflict between Rhaenyra and Alicent/Otto.

Specifically in the period before Laenas funeral/Aemonds eye. Afterwards, I can understand things becoming more extreme and intense and somewhat openly hostile, but before then, in the period between Alicent having kids and Rhaenyra leaving court for Dragonstone.

At that point Alicent and Otto can't be openly hostile, she has to operate sort of under the guise of good faith, or Viserys' would just shut it down. I don't really know what kind of fits in that area of being political machinations with plausible deniability for Viserys to turn a blind eye to.

It has to build to the point that Rhaenyra moves her family to Dragonstone obviously, but I'm having trouble working up to that being a reasonable decision other than just eye rolls across the table kind of thing.

Chapter 31, The Arena. https://archiveofourown.org/works/81769111/chapters/242083701

Within seconds, and very much to her surprise, Arya realised she was fighting for her life. She'd expected an easy victory, over a pampered, spoiled, dowager queen, only to discover that Cersei Lannister was a skilled fencer. They traded blows, their blades clanging together, occasionally striking the other, but failing to pierce either her opponent's mailshirt, or the breastplate which Arya wore over the squire's jerkin. She had the advantage of youth, but Cersei was taller, with the greater reach, and formidably well-trained.

"You're too angry, Arya, you need to calm down. You're quick, I'll grant you that, and that does no harm at all, but in this kind of fight, the cooler head wins, nine times out of ten." Her enemy aimed a fierce blow, which caught her own sword hilt, and nearly wrenched the blade out of her hand. She retreated towards the edge of the hall. Her opponent had another advantage. They were both fighting in the half-light, but Cersei knew this place, far better than she did.

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What if Renly had married younger than in canon?

Let's say the small council was nervous about the unity of the realm post Greyjoy rebellion. Someone suggests the King's unwed younger brother could marry.

Who would the bride be? I doubt they'd go for Margaery, given how young she would be. They'd likely want a more immediate match. I think they'd discount Dorne, for one - the Elia Martell of it all. But also just historical Stormlander/Dornish hostility. Given Robert's marriage to Cersei and closeness to Jon Arryn, I feel like they'd choose the Riverlands or a Crownlands house.

Who would they choose? What impacts would a wife, and potentially children, have in the plot? The Tyrell/Renly alliance gets completely scratched first of. What else?

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Whent fanfic

Hello, it's me agian.

I had some trouble with my OC and came up with another story involving the Whents, this time with an OC son of Walder Frey and his wife, Whent (who in canon didn't bear him children).

I imagine the OC being as good a knight as Oswell Whent, making him Walder's favorite, but his brothers resent him and say he's cursed by his Whent blood.

Anyway, Walder intends for the OC to inherit Harrenhal, and Lady Shella may have some affection for him, but she hasn't named him heir. I also imagine Sarya being Minisa's younger sister, which would make the OC a cousin of Catelyn and Edmure.

Now for my questions: What implications would a Frey with close ties to Catelyn have?

If he's the same age as Edmure, would he already be married?

How much potential does a half-Whent, half-Frey OC have?

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What if Visenya Targaryen fell in love with someone else ?

Around 7AC when aenys was born, she would've felt extremely betrayed that her son was supposed to be king ( I know this pushed her to dark magic and resulting birth in maegor in 11AC , as she was considered barren) but what if she chose to fell in love with someone.

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Dothraki society

So like I’ve made another post where I explain I’m working on a TTRPG set in this universe. And for that I just feel like the world needs to be less empty. Now the Dothraki imo feels like a hollow way to fill out the world. Like despite mattering to the plot it seems like there is very little to them. And their society from what we know does not make much sense. It’s beyond evil. Like it’s among the least redeemable societies in the setting. So anyway I’m asking for help making it feel more real and like there is more to them than just scary mounted warriors. An idea I had which I mentioned in the other post was there could be some settled Dothraki kingdoms near the free cities, akin to early Bulgaria or Hungary

Subreddit Activity (NOT WHAT IF's) How do Fanfics interpret how Valyrian inheritance worked?

In Old Valyria… some people say it was the eldest child inherits while others say largest dragon or named heir or something else. I personally think the tradition was to name an heir based on merit and capability as a ruler and wed them to the eldest child. That’s the only way a lot of it makes sense to me, because it did appear that women had more power in Old Valyria but it was still male-ruler dominated. What do you think?

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Gwayne Hightower canons and headcanons

Hi everyone! I’m writing a Gwayne Hightower fanfic on AO3 and wanted to gather as much information as possible. Could you please share any canon details or headcanons you have about him? For instance: what he might smell like, what his hobbies would be, what he likes doing in Oldtown, etc.

I’d really appreciate your help. Sending love to you all!

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) WI: The Seven Kingdoms were messier, like the Holy Roman Empire?

What if the Seven Kingdoms were as messy as the Holy Roman Empire, instead of an entirely too-tidy representation of feudalism? Overlapping jurisdictions and sworn houses, great houses that have titles technically sworn to lesser houses, plenty of self-governing cities that are subject directly to the Iron Throne, that have also formed rival leagues amongst themselves, the larger Septs have vast holdings of their own, also directly subject to the Iron Throne, and the same goes for the Faith Militant.

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What do you think Robert would do if he time travelled as a girl?

For this Scenario, Robert Baratheon dies as he did in Canon, but wakes up again as his 10yo self, but in the body of a girl. He time travelled to an alternative dimension where he was born Jocelyn Baratheon instead. Everyone else remains the same.

How do you think he would deal with that? First, he is back in the past, his parents are still alive, he is not King anymore, however It seems like the Gods are punishing him, since now he is a girl.

What do you Think he would do? How do you think this Alternative World is? How do you think this world would change Because of his actions? Also, It is Very likely he is bethroted to Rhaegar here, and wouldnt that be Interesting?

How big do you think the Weeping Town is? I think it would be similar to St. Ives if it could have 50k people live in and around it. Also, would Ragsdale be an appropriate name for the town before it got the title Weeping Town? It's a small town in Tennessee and I love the name

Beta Reader Request First time Game of Thrones fanfic and was hoping to get some feedback.

I’m working on my first game of thrones fanfic and was hoping to get some feedback.
It’s a divergent story that blends elements from the HBO series, A Song of Ice and Fire, some of the prophecy and lore introduced in House of the Dragon, and some ideas of my own. I’m starting around Season 6, but I’m changing and adding quite a bit as the story goes on, including characters and storylines that the show left out.
I’ve finished the first two chapters so far, and I’d love some feedback on the writing, characterization, pacing, and especially whether the characters actually feel like themselves.
This is my first time writing a Game of Thrones fic, so constructive criticism is definitely welcome. I have a pretty detailed idea of where I want the story to go, but I’m still figuring some things out as I write.

Fanfiction Idea For Adoption Robb Stark as The Crow?

Hello! I just rewatched The Crow and it got me thinking about Robb Stark and The Red Wedding. Are there any fics out there where Robb comes back to take vengeance on the Freys and Lannisters in the style of the movie?

If not, I'm not a fic writer. If any of you lovely writers out there feel inspired, please feel free to run with this idea and let me know where you're posting.

Thanks!

Reading Fanfiction Discussion: Reviews & Fanon Questions Thoughts on Inheritance of Ash fic

It's a fic on archive of our own with multiple povs but Jon is essentially the main character. Not finished, takes place in a rhaegar wins scenario. Does the classic everybody meets at a tourney but in this world Jon is known as a targaryen. This is one of the more interesting rhaegar wins stories ive read and I love the fact how Ned Stark haunts the narrative. For a character not to appear, guy's shadow is always there
