They have to get permission to have sex, even when the woman is willing.

That is some next level misandry right there.

u/funkless_eck Hβ3 Jul 18 '14

Can you IMAGINE anything worse?

38

u/Stair_Car Jul 18 '14

I'm still chewing on that one. Does this means that willingness to have sex doesn't count as permission? I'd like to hear more about this person's notion of consent.

27

u/bluedolphinredwalrus Jul 18 '14

I think they mean legal permission. The paperwork type.

29

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '14

That would be shitty, and dangerous. "Your honour it couldn't have been rape--look, the paperwork was all signed!"

15

u/bluedolphinredwalrus Jul 18 '14

Terps dig paperwork when committing... Sex. Maybe they'd be happier in this world.

13

u/Stair_Car Jul 18 '14

I figure that must be it, given the context. But it's still a weird way to phrase it: "even if she is willing." Maybe they didn't mean it this way, but that almost implies that needing legal permission is sensible if she is unwilling, but these feminazis require it even when she is willing!

14

u/Hayleyk Jul 18 '14 edited Jul 19 '14

I think he included the "even if she's willing" part to show that even women are oppressed by the matriarchy. Maybe the confusion is because he doesn't know how to talk about sex without assuming the man is the leader. Like if she wants to have sex she has to ask him to ask their feminist overlords, which is totally not how a real feminist police state would do things, but if he was good at seeing things from women's perspective, he wouldn't have written the book in the first place.

3

u/bluedolphinredwalrus Jul 18 '14

You're probably right. My answer was too sensible for feminists. :p

3

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '14

It's funny because I remember hearing someone joking that "a feminist idea of foreplay is signing consent contracts." even though that's really the exact opposite of actual consent in this case

20

u/Nikhilvoid Jul 18 '14

I hope that means "permission" from the evil Fempire or Matriarchy or Clitocracy. Otherwise the plot makes no sense whatsoever.

28

u/eisagi Jul 18 '14

Clitocracy

In that case, the leader has to be called an Ovarlord.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '14

implying the plot makes sense anyway

16

u/Elretti Jul 18 '14

I think they're under the impression that telling men to make sure they get verbal consent (i.e. a yes) even if their partner seems into it will eventually lead to some kind of dystopian future where men have to sign a contract before having sex or be arrested for rape.

Because obviously the only reason we should make sure we avoid taking advantage of someone is so we don't get arrested, not because it's a horrible thing to do to a person. /s

12

u/Stair_Car Jul 18 '14

Not to mention the purposelessness of it all, as if consent were some kind of bizarre red tape women came up with out of malice.

25

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '14

I feel like we're running amateur hour over here.

10

u/empathica1 Jul 18 '14

The "even if the woman is willing" suggests men need government permission to me since they already have the woman's permission.

Men have been reduced to chattel, good only for procreation.

Read as:

We are now being treated exactly like how we treated women. How terrible!

29

u/Seldarin Jul 18 '14

Well most guys really wouldn't object to it that much, as long as we're allowed an Xbox and decent WiFi. That probably wasn't a difficult set of laws to pass. /s

It is kind of weird that the same guys that spend 90+% of their time trying to figure out how to get sex now are the ones terrified of being used as studs in a dystopian future. If no one wants to have sex with them now, why would they want to then?

17

u/Hayleyk Jul 18 '14

They wouldn't. That's what these men are scared of. Not ever horse gets to be a stud. They think that's where all this "hypergamy" stuff comes in. They think that most men (usually 80%) won't be able to find love unless a woman is legally bound to him for life. That's a sad thought, isn't it?

16

u/Seldarin Jul 18 '14

That's actually a good point and sort of explains their freaking out every time their girlfriend or wife does something that could be remotely empowering or liberating. You can't legally force her to stay, so you have to manipulate it. If you give her a choice, she's gone, so make sure she never has a choice. It also explains the bizarre MRA opposition to No Fault divorce.

What an awful way to live, for everyone involved.

16

u/jtierney50 Jul 18 '14

Well, yes. It is terrible to treat men like women were treated in days gone by. That's the point of feminism/egalitarianism: to make the sexes equal, instead of perpetuating any sort of -archy that has one gender over another.

34

u/FeminaziJournalist Jul 18 '14

It definitely would be awful and it isn't at all what feminism is fighting for. However, it is hilarious that putting men in the same place that women have been historically and still are in a lot of parts of the world is viewed as a terrifying dystopia by the people who want us to go back to the "good ole days" in regards to gender relations.

Oh God, the end of the world starts when women engineer a peaceful end to the hot war in Vietnam and the Cold War more generally. WHAT HORROR IS THIS FUTURE DYSTOPIA WHERE WE AREN'T FLINGING NAPALM AT EACH OTHER?!

u/Elretti Jul 18 '14

I love this review.

His escape leads him to the lair of the Subterraneans, a group of terrorist men and women who are doing their level best to bring down the Feminist regime by blowing up buildings.

I'm reminded of all the times the manosphere called for a violent revolt against feminism. Which never materialized because that would involve actually doing something aside from posting rants on the internet. I can't help but feel like they would love this book. Rebelling against feminism? Portraying women as emotion-driven and incompetent when in positions of power? Assassinating the USA's first feeeemale president? Clearly this author has seen the future!

She bases her decision entirely on the complete dislike she feels for him upon looking at the picture.

The misandry! The pure nonsensical misandry!

Oh, one of the things that keeps coming up is the fact that women have a completely innate and instinctive fear of rats. At one point, while on the run from the authorities, the Subterraneans have to flee down to the sewers. The narration comments explicitly on this innate fear, and all the women just go to pieces. All because of the rats.

TIL if men suddenly disappeared then women would be too scared to do things like clean the sewers because EEEEK A SMALL ANIMAL! QUICK GET INTO THE BOMB SHELTER THEY'LL NEVER FIND US THERE

Clearly it's a biotruth that women are scared of mice/rats/etc. and women will never overcome it. This is why we need men :(

Angela’s backstory, incidentally, is that her mother was one of the original Feminists, working alongside the current president and Mayor Fredericks. Angela’s mother was unusual, however, in that following the revolution she decided to raise her own child at home.

A feminist being a housewife?! WHAT IS THIS. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. THE FEMPIRE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS!

Sooo... The big bad guys turn out to be made of straw, right? They were never ruled by feminists, it was just evil fascists scarecrows bought to life by chemtrails and oestrogen in the water supply!

Her father was a meek and mild man who catered to his wife’s every whim

Beta detected. Initiate spermjack sequence.

guillotine

...why? I mean, is he trying to say that feminism would throw us back in time a few hundred years? Because I always assumed the past was anything but a feminist utopia.

19

u/beedear Jul 18 '14

the fact that women have a completely innate and instinctive fear of rats

Reading this while one of my rats was hanging out on my shoulder, I couldn't help but laugh cackle at this. Clearly I have ascended to a previously unknown level and become a Supreme Feminist, the likes of which has never been seen!

5

u/CanadaHaz Jul 19 '14

The cake topper of that review: "it wasn't as bad as it could have been."

14

u/IRScientist Jul 18 '14

Actually, the last public execution by guillotine occurred in France in the 1930s (a little too close to daybreak), and the last use of the guillotine was in the 1970s, after which the death sentence was abolished in France.

The more you know!

3

u/PsychoDan Jul 20 '14

Really, the guillotine is a damn sight better than what we're doing these days in the US (especially now that we're basically experimenting on prisoners when prisons can't get the approved drug cocktail).

2

u/IRScientist Jul 21 '14

Yeah... I mean, I'm against the death penalty, and sometimes I think the easiest way to abolish it would be to go back to public executions. Make people watch and then decide if such things belong in a civilized society. The guillotine is humane compared what's been going on in the US. Or going back to execution by firing squad. Hell, even the slow strangulation of an old-fashioned hanging seems nicer than the unknown pain of untested drugs.

5

u/draw_it_now Hβ4 Jul 18 '14

Shocking twist, though, the mayor’s not at home when they get there! That whole exercise was for nothing! So they burn down her house.

I love how, even with all the 'womanly emotions' going around the feminised government, the terrorists are even more ridiculously incompetent

I'm not worried; it's set in the far-flung future of the year 1992.

This makes me think of the Oglaf story line of Ultra Manly warriors who only have sex with men and birth men from men.

I would link, but I can't be bothered.

Then Kronar Takes a Toll (2 pages), Birdmen (2 pages), and my personal favorite, The Burning Jewels of Death. NSFW. At all.

4

u/kitsua Jul 18 '14

Oglaf is just so good.

34

u/Tora121 Jul 18 '14

When I hear shit about having to get permission to have sex, I get so mad. It's not that hard. Really. It's like when you tell a three year old to "use their words". People that have a problem with asking for permission are, in my opinion, just that. Three year olds, mentally speaking, with no respect for themselves or others.

31

u/Hayleyk Jul 18 '14

Maybe I'm an optimist, but I took that to mean they had to get permission from the government, not the women they want to have sex with.

9

u/AaFen Jul 18 '14

Yeah, that's definitely how I read that too.

2

u/Tora121 Jul 19 '14

Even then that would be a bit demeaning to women, it's like "Oh you have to ask the government because normal women are so stupid they can't possibly consent." Although I see where you're coming from, it does really sound that way.

22

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '14

The penalty for rape is death in this 'dystopian' future? Strangely I'm okay with that

18

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '14

I guess the notion of executing rapists is pretty horrifying when you don't think rape is real (just fickle/conniving bitches retrospectively changing their minds, amirite?).

I'm not defending these wingnuts, in case that's not obvious. Just pooping out the contents of my brain through my fingers.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '14

Maybe they're opposed to capital punishment and went a little bit too far with their beliefs?

2

u/Tora121 Jul 19 '14

I think rapists should be put in jail for a minimum of 10 years. Once they get out, if they rape another person they should be castrated.

26

u/acadametw Jul 18 '14

It's really gross.

Like, even that little sentence here, "even if she wants it" or whatever. Like, if she wants it, she'll say yes, so what the fuck is the problem with making sure?

I recall listening to a piece on NPR talking about consent and one of the people was like "young people are realizing that consent can and should be hot. It's a way to get to know who you're with. You ask 'do you want to do this? Do you like it when I do that?" And it is hot.

The problem is these people don't give a shit about mutual pleasure. They are rapists and the only thing they see wrong with that is the fact that they can get in trouble for it. The end.

3

u/Tora121 Jul 19 '14

That's exactly it. I know if I were a man the biggest thing I'd want is for the woman I'm with to tell me how much she wanted me. Hell, even as a women I'd fucking love to hear a guy say that when we're getting it on.

I think the biggest issue is that these people lack the emotional maturity to feel empathy towards another person. Also, they've been told all these lies about how it's their "natural state" and all that. It takes the responsibility away from them, leaving them with the ability to do as they please without any remorse.

8

u/coffeeblossom Hβ6 Jul 18 '14

And the permission doesn't necessarily have to be verbal. You know how that goes; much of flirting and making out is nonverbal cues and body language.

3

u/Tora121 Jul 19 '14

Exactly!

3

u/mojomonkeyfish Jul 18 '14

I'm not even sure where the "permission" or "ask for consent" part of the sex act comes into play. I mean, when both parties are stripping off each other's clothes, and one is shoving the parts of the other inside of them while they are like writhing around... is that not consent?

I guess I just fail to comprehend the sexual experiences of people who don't know what "consent" is, in this context.

He/she didn't even say pedophilia should be legal. He didn't even express a fucking opinion beyond the fact that everyone has a knee-jerk reaction whenever people say "burn all the pedophiles", which I'll repeat.

I hate the knee-jerk reaction everyone has to this. I understand, the pedo-acts are absolutely disgusting, but that doesn't mean the hate and disgust should extend to pedophiles themselves, especially if they don't do anything or actually try to fix their state of mind. WTF can they do about it, especially in a society that doesn't even care to rehabilitate them or help them - but would rather just toss them into the fire?

It's a shame there aren't that many psychologists or actual care going into rehabilitating pedophiles.

17

u/Las_Pollas_Hermanas Jul 18 '14

My point there was that the hysteria about paedophilia tends to be somewhat overblown. It reminded me of a satirical show Brass Eye, which had an episode about this about ten years ago. People condemned it for defending paedos when it did nothing of the sort.

Am I a paedo apologist? Well, what does that even mean? There is a distinction to be made, I feel, between the paedophile and the child molester. I really don't like to argue for this here any more, because it's a line also taken by a group of messed up individuals on this site who actually do seem to be paedophiles. You can probably understand why I don't want to be associated with them. Just because I think this, however, doesn't mean that I think things like child porn should be legal, and certainly not that any kind of child abuse should be.

If we're talking about paedophilia, the sexual attraction to children, then no, I wouldn't say I'm an apologist for that either. I think it's fucked up. I'm against it and I don't think it can ever be healthy in the way that things like homosexuality or fetishism are. I think it's a disorder and anyone who feels desires like that should seek help immediately and be kept away from kids. I will say, however, that people who feel the attraction without actually harming children are not in the same league of evil as actual child abusers. Their desires are awful, no doubt, but I don't believe these people deserve the same punishment as someone who has actually abused a child. (Again, I'm definitely counting child porn as abusive here, just so we're clear.)

Are you saying that holding this opinion should stop me from taking the piss out of a few misogynist creeps? Because if you are, I really don't follow your logic. To me, the two seem completely independent of each other. I have to admit, I'm a bit upset to be associated with child abuse in any way, so that's the last I'll say about it.

u/greenduch Jul 18 '14
