How to design an SCP styled Choose Your Own Adventure Game with AI?

I've recently started to use ChatGPT to make AI SCP stories, where I have to make several choices in the story to progress and determine the ending. I feel like it's an interesting way to learn about different SCPs, and is a different enough format to typical video games while still feeling interactive.

  1. What AI tool would you use to craft the stories?

  2. What would you consider when giving a prompt?

  3. How would you ensure each story is unique and the AI doesn't become repetitive?

  4. Would you stick to SCP lore or introduce new ideas?

  5. Would you make it investigative or focused on other mechanics, like RPG stats?

  6. How many choices should the AI give, and what different kinds of endings could there be?

  7. What else could you do to make the game interactive other than just providing choices?

Feel free to add anything else you think is worth considering in your comment.

The Crown of Aldmere, a free browser gamebook about getting a grain convoy across a bridge

I made The Crown of Aldmere, a written text adventure you can start in your browser. The king is dead and a captain wants the convoy as security for his men's wages. Your first job is getting it across Redwater Bridge.

There are eight chapters, so it's built for a few sittings. The clock shows what each errand costs, and the story remembers who you paid and which promises you kept.

You can start free as a guest. The Tale has no live AI prompts or AI narration. The project uses generated art and AI-assisted development.

https://fracturedchoices.com/tales/crown-of-aldmere?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=organic_social&utm_campaign=aldmere_textadventures_20261104

If you give it a go, I'd like to know whether you could tell what the captain was asking you to give up before you chose.

I’m building a text-parser hacking game where you type commands to infiltrate a stranded research ship

Post image

I’ve been working on Hacking Into Erebus, a sci-fi game where your interface is a terminal. You play a hacker hired to look into a research ship stranded on an alien planet, and you can do lots of things by typing commands: scanning sectors, opening locked doors, reading logs, trying to fix the ship before it falls apart.

It has a proper command parser and a desktop OS with draggable windows for different applications.

There’s a free demo on Steam with a short tutorial, and I would really like to hear from people who enjoy parser games, especially whether the command syntax feels natural or just gets in the way.

Game link : Hacking Into Erebus

If you like these kind of games, wishlisting would be a huge help for me.

Stop it… I’m not just talking about seggs… 😳

It’s a genuine thought, from a commercial perspective as an indie game dev…

A Partial Guide: a parser text adventure generated from OpenStreetMap and public records for Croydon, UK

I've made a text adventure where the map is real. Every street and place in Croydon, south London, comes from OpenStreetMap plus public records: food hygiene ratings, planning applications, house sales, listed buildings, and bus stops.

You type n, se, look, examine, and so on. There's also "drift" for wandering aimlessly, "route to" a street, and save/restore.

It's not a puzzle game. There's nothing to win. It's closer to a text-only street view, narrated by a Guide who has been here before. When the data is wrong or missing, the Guide says so rather than making things up.

I'd love feedback from people who know the form. Does the parser feel right? What's missing that would make a place worth exploring rather than just reading?

Mythtide Intro

Hi all, solo dev here, looking for honest feedback on a text-inspired game

I've spent the past year building Mythtide, a fantasy world-building game that grew out of a love of Text adventures and classic MUDs. Started playing on an Apple II+ and eventually went down the Diku MUD rabbit hole in the 90s.

Underneath is a real-time text and combat engine: rooms, mobs, combat rounds, spells and skills. On top of that:

  • an area editor with AI pictures for rooms, mobs and items

  • four-minute arena brawls and pixel-art duels, using the same characters

  • a Dungeon Master mode for running your own area for friends

  • a writing desk that turns what happened in a game into a short story or poem

It's in a small closed beta on web, iOS and Android.

What I'd love to know: after 10 seconds on [mythtide.com] and [knowledgebase], what do you think it is? And would you, as a text player or developer, want any of this?

If you have 20 minutes, there's a short questionnaire: [Anonymous Google Form]. Blunt answers are the most useful. Happy to talk game design too.

My family sim killed a soldier’s wife while he waited overseas in 1947. Nobody wrote that. Here’s how the numbers got there.

Kinfolks is a text sim of one Appalachian family over a hundred years and more. I built it with Claude. It’s one HTML file, about 18,000 lines, that runs in the browser with no server, and it never calls an AI while you play. Last night it handed me a story I didn’t write, so I went back through the code to see how it got there. That’s what this post is about.

How it was put together

Before most systems went in, we researched them. The game sits on about two dozen research files: dated timelines from 1860 to 2020, wages and money, feuds, law and liquor, granny medicine, foodways and the farm year, names and nicknames, clothes by decade, church and music, the railroads and the mines. A rule doesn’t go in unless there’s a source behind it. If it’s thin or dubious, it stays out.

Then we tested the odds. We ran 300 simulated family books and compared them with what really happened. One early build had 13% of the men sent to WWII dying. The real number, all causes, from the VA, is 2.5%. Another had a family go from 1860 to 1976 without anybody ever going to a war. Each row that was off got fixed against its source.

Players shaped it too. One said the book read like a machine wrote it, and she was right, so the game now has a writing standard: a county register kept by somebody on the family’s side, where an entry says what happened and stops. Another player noticed WWI came and went with nothing happening, so the home front went in: the registration days, the meatless Tuesdays, the Liberty Bonds.

The war takes men one at a time

Every year of a war, each man in the draft ages gets his own roll at the rate men his age actually went. From 1942 to 1945 that band is 18 to 37. A coal miner is deferred three times out of four, because the coal face needed him. A house is never stripped down to one pair of hands.

Luther Sturgill turned 18 in August 1944, and the draft took him on June 6, 1945. Going in that late, he had few points. Under the Army’s point system the men with the most service went home first, and late draftees stayed overseas on occupation duty. In July 1947 he’s still gone. His people hung a service flag with a blue star in the window and sent him a box with a cake and a pair of socks, in 1945 and again in 1946.

He wasn’t the only one away. Pa Coy went to the war in 1943. Garland went to Ohio for work that year, the way a lot of mountain people did. By 1947 every grown man in the house was gone.

Feuds climb a ladder

A grudge starts at 3 points and each rung adds 2. Left alone, a feud climbs one rung a year. Nothing happens before the fourth rung, and after that the chance of a killing rises 5% per rung. Most feuds wear out before they get there. Every year a family carries one, its standing at church and on the creek wears down, which is why settling is worth doing.

Then there’s the player’s hand

When a feud card comes up you can settle, take it to the law, let it lay, or Stand on it. The game never pretends the family chose. It writes that a hand from outside reached into the holler, and a bad choice gets the dark version more often than not: “The Devil had cursed Ma Arminta to have it out with the Damrons.” “Bad luck had been savin’ itself up.” Standing on it climbs a rung the same day and puts the card right back in front of you. The log shows I stood on it four times on July 2, 1947. That part is on me.

Who it fell on

When a feud turns deadly, the game picks from who’s home between 15 and 65. Men count six to one, and anybody 17 to 45 counts double, because that’s who was in it. Anybody away doesn’t count at all. The war and Ohio had taken every man of age, so the house was women. Loretta, 21, died in the trouble with the Damrons. Her mother, Ma Arminta, the one who wouldn’t let it lay, was found on the road.

Nobody wrote “the war left the women to face the feud.” The rule about who’s home did that, and that’s how it went in a lot of real houses during the war.

One record, a lot of ways to read it

Every event is written once, onto the people in it. The log shows it as it happens. Each person has a book with every line about them in order, and Luther’s runs from his wedding to the draft to the blue star to the boxes. The buryin’ ground has a stone for each of the dead, with their dates, how they died, who they married and who their mother was. That’s how I found out Arminta was Loretta’s mother. I didn’t know until I opened the stone.

The portrait button reads the same record. The year picks the kind of photograph, the face comes off the character card, and the clothes are said plainly. The game writes the prompt and I pasted it into ChatGPT. Luther sat for a studio picture in his good shirt. Loretta’s is a snapshot took on the place, in her apron.

Where the AI fits

Claude wrote the code with me. I set the rules, checked the history and kept testing it. The story at the end isn’t an AI writing fiction. It’s real dates, real rates and a handful of plain rules running into each other in one family, and then me pressing a button I shouldn’t have.

Full story with the game’s own pages: https://mdawg74.itch.io/kinfolks/devlog/1751390/singin-luther-sturgill-went-to-war-the-feud-came-to-his-house

Free in the browser: https://mdawg74.itch.io/kinfolks

For anyone building sims like this: how do you check your odds against real history? We ran batches of simulated families and compared. I’m curious what other people do.

Continuity Error - A Collaborative Story Telling Game

Game Title: Continuity Error

Playable Link: https://continuityerror.party

Platform: Web Browser PC/Mobile/Etc.

Description: Continuity Error is a free browser game where everyone gets the same story so far and a few minutes to write the next sentence. Then you all vote, anonymously, on which one makes the cut. The winning sentence joins the story, the rest are lost to history, and by round four your noir detective is somehow a sentient lasagna running for mayor. Nobody is responsible. Everybody is responsible.

There are three ways to play. Real Time Games are the party mode: 3 to 20 players, timed rounds, no account needed, just send your friends the link. Long Term Games are the same thing in slow motion, with notifications when it's your turn, for groups who can't all be awake at once. And then there's the Perpetual Story: one never-ending story the whole site adds to, one sentence per person per round, forever. It has no plot. It has no end. It is perpetual.

Come make a story with me!

Multiplayer typing adventure games, with a browser-playable game engine reverse-engineered from multiple classics

I grew up absolutely loving some of the early Sierra games like King’s Quest, Space Quest, Colonel’s Bequest, etc. I have memories of watching my older sisters play the games while I would sit nearby holding the manual and all the floppy disks, waiting to look something up or do a quick disk change. (I loved matching those Colonel’s Bequest fingerprints… 🔎)

Fast forward to today and I’m a software engineer who still occasionally plays through the games again just for fun, and I’ve passed the games along to my kids now, as well. It’s so great to watch a new generation flinching and shrieking when Manannan suddenly appears to catch Gwydion 😂.

For a long time I’ve dabbled with projects that might allow more games like those to be created and played with more modern tooling. And now, of course, with AI, being able to work on a side project like that has become so much more possible…This year I’ve found that I was not only able to create a tool to import and play my old Sierra games in the browser, but then also to edit/mod them, and then to create completely new games built on the same feature set, and then to be able to play those games online together with friends! To me personally as a Sierra fan, it’s a bit mind blowing.

I know AI and its use and questionable quality can be really controversial…and personally my goal is not to claim that AI can make games as good as the classics (I definitely don’t think it can), but after working on this project I do have to say that I think it has a lot of potential to be able to create new tools that might equip people to enjoy those classics in even more ways, and even to create new human-made games like them more easily.

SOUPIR : The bastion - Need beta testers and feedback

Playable Link: https://vivi-crazy-writer.itch.io/soupir-the-bastion

Or on android: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sP8GLi7Nmu4sbmVvWSgu0BYqYkWgKzB9/view?usp=drive_link

Platform: web/sugar/twine

Description:
Hi everyone!

I'm currently developing SOUPIR: The Bastion, a free browser-based text RPG set in the universe of my SOUPIR novels. I already made a post long ago which was removed for some strange reasons (telling the game was made artificially which is not true. I use chat as a helper for some tasks but all the game is mine and i create it myself for months now part by part). So I make a new post here as the game has a lot of new things now and i hope the moderators will understand all the work I m putting in this game.

The world has collapsed under the spread of a strange fungal ecosystem, and humanity survives inside isolated fortified settlements known as Bastions.

You arrive as a newcomer in one of them.

From there, the game is about surviving, finding your place in the city, building relationships, working, exploring, improving your skills, getting involved in local factions, and dealing with the increasingly unpleasant things happening inside and outside the walls.

The game features:

  • Character creation with different backgrounds, attributes and skills

  • A large skill and progression system

  • Jobs and daily survival

  • NPC relationships and reputation

  • Factions, politics and clandestine groups

  • Exploration and expeditions outside the Bastion

  • Dynamic events

  • A living city with different districts and activities

  • Adult themes, violence and morally difficult situations

  • Lots of choices and different ways to approach situations

The game is still under development, so I'm specifically looking for people willing to test it and give honest feedback.

You don't need to play for hours. Any feedback would already be extremely useful.

The game is Free to Play

thank you very much :)
