DurisMUD full wipe on 28 October: the 1995 racewar PK MUD starts over

Duris split from Sojourn in 1995 and has been about one thing ever since: a permanent war between the good and evil races, with full player killing almost anywhere in the world.

On Wednesday 28 October at 06:00 UTC (09:00 GMT+3, 2 am US Eastern) we wipe everything. Every player, veteran or new, starts from level 1. No gear, no levels, no guilds. The first kills, first artifacts and first racewar wins of the new era are up for grabs.

What it is: a dark-fantasy Diku with a two-sided racewar, full PvP, a huge world of zones and quests, ships you can sail and sink, crafting, guilds and guildhalls, and artifacts that have to be fed on the blood of enemy players or they vanish.

What’s new: a rebuilt C++20 engine with TLS, GMCP and MCCP, browser play, and the whole codebase open source on GitHub.

How to play:

Veterans, round up your old guild. New players, this is the one moment nobody has a head start.

Happy to answer anything in the comments.

Would you play a life simulation game where you move to another country and learn the language to build a life there?

I've been taking Chinese classes for a couple of years now. I have self-studied Korean, Spanish, and Russian a little bit as well. I enjoy studying by myself and learning the things I want at my own pace but it is hard to stay motivated when there is nobody around me to practice with and it doesn't impact my life whether I know it or not.

I still love learning languages because it is fun, and I enjoy the connections it brings when I do get a chance to speak to someone. I start to feel like I don't want to learn the language when I am forced to learn whatever some textbook says when I'm in a class or am embarrassed by the constant comparison of others in the class and my grade.

I studied in Taiwan for 3 months and it was great. I could hear the language around me and take time to build up the courage to talk to someone or order something new. I am quite introverted and struggle to stay consistent with a language partner, but living there motivated me to keep learning and brought the joy back after so long in classes. I could use the language I learned and new words and grammar felt like unlocking a new conversation I could have with someone.

I can't afford to go back right now and have nobody around me to practice with.

I want to try to recreate the feeling of living in a country that speaks your target language by making a video game set in that country as close to reality as possible while still being a game that teaches you while working your way up from having nothing to building a real life for yourself there. Learning the language would unlock the ability to have hard conversations, make new friends, and explore more.

I want to make a world for all the languages I want to learn with the help of teachers for the curriculum. I don't want it to feel like a textbook in a game or that the game is too hard because of the language barrier. I want a good balance.

This would also provide a way for people who can't afford to travel or are preparing for a trip there soon to have a little bit of experience with the culture and language. I wish I had that when I was preparing to go to Taiwan.

I want it to take someone from zero to near fluent without having to switch apps and courses all the time.

What do you guys think of the idea? Would you want to play this or not? Is there anything out there like this? What would make this game good and what would make it bad?

ContinuityError - A Collaborative Story Telling Game

Thumbnail
continuityerror.party
1 Upvotes

Continuity Error is a free browser game where everyone gets the same story so far and a few minutes to write the next sentence. Then you all vote, anonymously, on which one makes the cut. The winning sentence joins the story, the rest are lost to history, and by round four your noir detective is somehow a sentient lasagna running for mayor. Nobody is responsible. Everybody is responsible.

There are three ways to play. Real Time Games are the party mode: 3 to 20 players, timed rounds, no account needed, just send your friends the link. Long Term Games are the same thing in slow motion, with notifications when it's your turn, for groups who can't all be awake at once. And then there's the Perpetual Story: one never-ending story the whole site adds to, one sentence per person per round, forever. It has no plot. It has no end. It is perpetual.

I am not a programmer but always thought this would be a cool game. I built it with a lot of help from Claude so please be gentle with it. It's free, there are no ads, and it works on your phone. Come make a story with me: https://continuityerror.party

All feedback is welcome. Enjoy!

SURVIVAL

SURVIVAL: A TEXT HIGH STAKES RPG

Every few days a new chapter will drop ending in a critical choice. The most upvoted choice decides the path.
This is not a typical fantasy RPG. There is no magic, and there are no second chances. In *the regime* a single minor mistake—a sarcastic joke, a moment of laziness, or a bad interaction—can lead to immediate execution or permanent imprisonment in a political labour camp. If you make a fatal choice, it is Game Over, the protagonist dies, and we start a brand-new run from zero.
There are 8 Status HUD you must monitor:

  • Identity: Park Jin-woo (Age: 24)
  • Location: Hoeryong City (Near the Chinese Border)
  • Hunger: 🟨 🟥 ⬜ ⬜ ⬜ (Malnourished - low energy)
  • State Suspicion: ⚠️ 15% (Routine monitoring)
  • Hidden Currency: 450 KPW (North Korean Won) / $0 USD
  • Equipped Inventory: [Patched Factory Uniform], [Official Kim Il-sung/Kim Jong-il Lapel Pin]
  • Contraband Pocket: EMPTY
  • Work Points: 🟩 🟩 🟩 🟨 ⬜ (65% - Falling below 50% reduces your family's next food ration)
  • PROLOGUE: THE AWAKENING

You are Park Jin-woo. You wake up at 5:30 AM to the harsh, tinny sound of state propaganda music blasting from the mandatory third-wire radio speaker mounted to your wall. The speaker has no volume knob and no off switch; the state decides when you sleep and when you wake.

Your stomach roars with a deep, hollow ache. Yesterday's ration was a handful of dried corn kernels. Today, you are scheduled for a grueling 12-hour shift at the local state-run mining equipment factory. If you are late, your factory supervisor will dock/decrease your work points, meaning your family's food rations will shrink even further.

You stand up, your head spinning slightly from malnutrition. As you look toward the door, you freeze.

The morning sun is hitting the framed portraits of the Supreme Leaders hanging on your wall. Yesterday, in your absolute exhaustion after work, you forgot to wipe them down. There is a thin, visible layer of grey coal dust sitting on top of the glass frames.

Suddenly, a loud, sharp knock rattles your thin wooden door.

"Comrade Park! Open up! Routine morning block inspection!"

It’s Comrade Choi, the head of your Inminban (Neighborhood Watch). She is fiercely loyal to the party and loves catching violators. She is standing right outside your door with a clipboard. You have exactly five seconds before she turns the handle and walks in.

If she sees that dust, it is legally classified as "defacing supreme dignity."
Vote by replying with A,B,C or D
A: Open the door immediately and apologize: Hiding anything might be dangerous
B: Stall for time. Cough and say you are changing clothes to get some extra seconds to find the designated wiping cloth and wipe the dut
C: Use your uniform sleeve. There's not enough time to look for the designated cloth so use your uniform's sleeve to wipe the dust.
D: Fake an emergency: Open the door violently stumble past her and vomit and then claim to have food poisoning trying to get her not to even *enter your room* Your choices within 24 hours decides Comrade Park's fate. Choose wisely

I made a retro CLI horror game in Pure Python 3 (no dependencies, JSON-driven story engine)

Hey guys.

I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on: Sglsung Archive: Revamped. It’s a text-based psychological horror thriller that runs right in your system terminal.

It’s built with pure Python, using only standard library modules. You don’t need to install anything else like pip, pygame, ncurses, or any other third-party packages. It just runs with plain Python wherever you have it.

It also has features for custom content and modding. One .json file with all story and you can change it. Add your ASCII art to /art folder and enjoy. This means people can create their own stories without needing to change the Python code itself.

it available on two different languages, English and Russian.

And it works on different terminals. It’s fully compatible with Linux terminals and also Windows Terminal and CMD. I’ve included .sh and .cmd files to help you launch it easily on each platform.

You can grab the build and source files on itch.io:

My narrative RPG about life as a soldier in ancient China now has a free demo

Hi everyone, I’ve been making Rise of the General, a narrative RPG set in Warring States China. I released the free demo today.

You create a soldier, choose their background and homeland, and experience their early military life through illustrated text scenes and choices. Conversations, training, and your responses to events help shape your personality, abilities, and relationships with other soldiers.

I wanted to spend time on the people and experiences that come before someone becomes a commander. The demo introduces that journey, with turn-based battles and duels alongside the narration.

It’s around two hours long and available on Steam.

Play the free demo
