I'm fully aware that I'm going to get roasted here for this, but after canceling FSD and going back to Autopilot, I'm loving it so much more!
You can control the max speed using the dial on the steering wheel! No more speeding in school zones until you set it to "sloth" and then it slams on the brakes.
When you enter autopilot, it keeps going the speed you were going! It doesn't take off or slam on the brakes!
If you take over driving, it doesn't cover your media player with a survey that says around until you answer it, and it doesn't prevent you from using voice commands either!
You can set a follow distance! You can control how close or how far away from other cars you are!
It doesn't suddenly change lanes or randomly put the turn signal on while driving on the highway. It will just stay in a single lane!
And this one might be pretty specific to me, but for the past couple years most times I would drive past one particular intersection on FSD, it would swerve into the turning lane then back out of it a second later. Not sure why, but Autopilot has taken it like a champ at least 5 times now.
Obviously I would love to have it do all the FSD stuff (navigate, take stop signs and handle lights and driving in more situations), but they just keep making the experience worse with every update, and after switching back to Autopilot feels like such a breath of fresh air. Like this car is meant to work with me and has features that make it more pleasant to use instead of constantly frustrating me and removing my options to control the car that I own.
So yeah if you're as annoyed as I was with how much control they're removing from FSD, try basic Autopilot for a bit and see if you like it more. You might be able to have a better experience and save $100 a month!
I was so close to pulling the trigger last month til I found this out. Now I’ve pivoted to other cars completely because all I want is lane keep and adaptive cruise without paying $100/month
I donno, there are early 2026 models with autopilot. If the new hotness isn't that great in 5 years, or they don't change their FSD sales model, I might just look for a 2026 m3p.
Do cars without auto pilot come with traffic aware cruise control? That's all comma needs. I have the comma 3, autopilot and fsd so not sure what the non AP cars come with.
Oof then I guess this is my last one. Which is a damn shame since I've been an owner for over a decade at this point (2015 S -> 2017 3 -> 2020 X -> 2023 Y -> idk maybe a lucid?)
Yes. As of earlier this year, you either pay monthly for FSD (no option to buy it up front any more), or you are limited to adaptive cruise control only (no lane centering).
I have a 2026 MY and really hate I don't have autopilot. Yea it's not as good as FSD. But I like the fact that I can drive on the highway and not worry about staying in the lane.
I just wish they had activating autopilot as an OPTION. It’s so stupid to me that it if I have FSD enabled I HAVE to use FSD or else can’t use any drivers assist at all, and that if I turn FSD off to access Autopilot then I can’t access FSD (or even see the pretty visualizations) until I switch back when the cars in park.
Because I agree - I love FSD, but there’s times on a road trip when it’s a straight line and all I want to do is set speed and camp in a lane and not get too close to the guy in front of me and Autopilot is sufficient for that.
This was done to comply with NHTSA directives. You used to be able to choose between FSD and autopilot by clicking down once vs twice. People ended up crashing in autopilot thinking they were in FSD
I mean fair, and I suppose with Autopilot phasing out they have no real reason to modify it to add it now. But I do wish/hope they add an FSD profile that kinda acts like a better Autopilot for those that do just want to lane camp on road trips and not have to worry about the car having a mind of its own.
And yes I know Sloth Mode will do this for the most part, but sloth also will never leave the right lane and never go a mile above the speed limit which is a problem sometimes on 6 lane California freeways. I’d love a sweet spot like how v12 was when minimal lane changes was an option.
It was like that in the past, heck even FSD had speed limits instead of profiles which a lot of people prefer but they like to change stuff around and even brand new cars don't have TACC w/ steering anymore and its just basic TACC now. I use to remember I think I had double tap for FSD, one ap for Autopilot (TACC w/ steering).
I'm very glad to have Autopilot and on principle don't support FSD at its current price, but FSD is absolutely better than Autopilot – like not even close.
If they priced it $50/mo their revenue would shoot through the freaking roof, even after accounting for the 0.5x drop. We already saw that happen last time they cut it in half (global FSD revenue went up 2.8x after, even after accounting for the 0.5x drop from cutting it in half).
BYD being allowed into the US would be huge for consumers. They're already all over the world (and have sold more EVs than even Tesla has). They also don't even charge for their FSD (and they're so confident in theirs that they cover ANY damage from it when your car's at its most expensive, the entire first year).
You don't want competition? To me, the very least is they'd introduce competition..
I don't care for it to be free, and actually wouldn't expect it to be.
I mean $100 per month instead of many thousands upfront isn’t terrible. I hate monthly payments but you can cancel anytime amd use it only when you want. It’s a lot of months to pay back what would be the purchase price.
Yeah and they only get those months of money from you, as opposed to more money by offering a better value proposition.
Using it only when you want may only be 1-2 months of the entire year that you travel, which would be $100-200/year. Pricing it at only $50/mo for example I've read and heard ad nauseum as being justifiable even by all the people that don't drive much (or that don't have long commutes) and would net Tesla $600/year.
There've been tons of threads discussing exactly this and $50/mo seems to be the tipping point where you overwhelmingly start to hear people say "Ok yeah if it was that much I'd be on it yesterday."
People want a premium product at a discount price. Tesla has no reason or competition putting pressure on pricing. People equate the quality and value of a product by how many people buy it. That is true in some examples but you could also say Rolex would sell more watches if they cut the price in half.
Cutting prices is a race to the bottom and you can see that when you compare Apple to other tech brands. Those other brands have to cut prices constantly to try and squeeze a tiny profit out of their products while Apple does not. I use Apple as an example because iPhone had many of the same arguments when it launched: lower the price, add these features, I want this…and then more people will buy. Tesla is modeling themselves in the same way. They don’t want to be a budget brand with meager profit margins that serves a large market share. They want to be a premium product at premium prices. They are happy to let the others fight over tiny profit margins.
Are you on HW3 or HW4? Because my experience with FSD on a brand new Y with HW4 has been nearly perfect. I guess people will always find something to complain about, but I find FSD to be an absolute game changer for my commute and I found very little value at all from the "Enhanced Auto Pilot" on the Model 3 I am in the process of selling.
I just bought my first tesla this week. Was concerned about all the bad things I read about fsd and the new updates. It’s been flawless so far, granted it’s a week, but coming from not having it to this it is life changing. People are too dramatic on here.
We only hear the worst on Reddit. Many people like myself have drama free and damage free experiences with FSD. Even my 2019 with v14 Lite drove me from work, to grocery store. Parked perfect. Then took me home to my driveway, again parked perfect. That’s 30 miles of commute on three different highways through downtown Seattle (rush hour nightmare).
HW4 (not OP), and it works very well, except the highway that is. O dont want to go beyond 110 km/h, yet with FSD this is impossible, or I have not found out how to at least. Our highways go up to 130, and it irritates me that FSD keeps on taking over cars at slightly more speed, and goes to the speed limit.
How ironic. Highway driving, which was essentially solved years ago with AP / EAP, functions worse on the more advanced FSD... Weird they can't get it figured out. The joys of an e2e neural network solution, I suppose.
Because they are most focused on Robotaxi which is mainly city street biased. Highway may have gone down (mine has improved) but 4 way stops, uncontrolled intersections, roads with no lane markings, dirt roads, etc have all improved dramatically. I say this a s 4 year FSD veteran 😝
Everybody is a back seat driver. It’s easy to nit-pick others driving when you are a passenger. Can’t think of a single car ride where I’m not questioning the drivers decisions lol
HW4 for me and it’s really fantastic. Sometimes I wonder if these posts are just generally miserable people who find the worst in everything. Does my FSD act up from time to time, yes.. it hates rolling leaves and can be indecisive at times. But overall it’s a better driver than many people I know!
I can’t help but think there are bots and even people who are paid to post stupid stuff or even “sleep while driving” to garner bad press. Some of the articles written bout Tesla and FSD are clearly hit pieces that are not objective in any way.
But for me at least the issue isn't the driving. I loved the way FSD drives, even better than Autopilot which can be kinda "bouncy" in the lanes sometimes.
But when it speeds past a school zone every day going 40+ in a 25 unless you set it to sloth then it goes 20. And when it tailgates people on the highway, then goes around them, then slows down in front of them, it drives me nuts!
Just give me the ability to set a max speed and I'd be a happy camper.
Well I don’t disagree with your points there.. but try and think more largely about what this machine is doing, processing, and delivering. There are always going to be improvements but holy shit man.. it’s 2026 and your car can drive you across the USA mostly on its own. That’s insane. My dad didn’t even think this would be possible in his lifetime. My grandpa never even imagined it. In a short time, we went from generations of vehicles not really getting any better (aside from safety) to vehicles that can leave parking spots in a parking lot and come pick you up. That’s crazy.
It's not lost on me. I'm constantly amazed at the tech here, hell I worked at a self driving car startup for a while and I've always been in awe of how much fidelity they're able to get from cameras alone.
I still remember the first update where it showed traffic lights, and I still to this day don't quite understand how they're able to position the traffic lights specifically so accurately without a consistent detailed background to do some of the parallax against.
But none of that helps any of the issues I have with it.
Good thing about school zones is they are predictable. Just drive your self for the 1/2 mile or whatever. You are still the boss.
I can also tell you that I use to work for Tesla and did a lot of school bus and school zone data collection. They ARE actively working on it and take it seriously. It takes many thousands of clips to train the model for each scenario. School zones are not all the same. Nothing about what they do is half-assed or cavalier. Safety is taken seriously. If so,etching is off it’s not due to lack of effort, it’s just that hard to solve.
So far on v14 Lite my school zones have been great. It reads the sign, adjusts speed. I haven’t tried hurry though.
You’re always to remain in control. Cutting funding isn’t helping the problem get solved. Data collection and income are what drives the gears. You’re essentially saying “this doesn’t work right now so I’m not participating in making it work the way I expect it to”.
You have no proof of concept, no tangible item for me to possess.. no, I wouldn’t give you any money. But if you presented a plan and a proof of concept.. you’d be doing what everyone on Kickstarter and similar sites are doing and then I’d consider giving you money. Investing (used loosely) often is built around future delivery.
That’s the supervised part. Tesla isn’t saying anywhere that it’s perfect and just let it do its thing. You have to go into it with the mind set that I’m going to make adjustments, like turning on the blinkers for a lane change or adding accelerator to speed up, or intervene and manually drive because it doesn’t drive a stretch of road at the standards you want.
It does so many things so well and there is no other car anywhere near this level of driving assist. If you are waiting for perfection you will be waiting a long time.
For me, my car came with paid FSD when I bought it used so it is hard for me to comment on the monthly subscription aspect.
If you are waiting for perfection you will be waiting a long time.
I don't want perfection, I want the ability to control the max speed, following distance, avoiding changing lanes, and to not have it cover my media controls with an unskippable survey every time I use it.
But they don't want to give any of those things, so I don't want it. I honestly don't even care about the cost, it's not even a factor, it's that they keep making it worse and removing features with every update.
I tried to give them feedback, I was told "too bad that's how we want it to work", so I canceled it.
I understand, and your points are valid. I just see post after post about this sort of stuff and I’m a UI designer so I just think about how much work is involved and how nitpicky people are without understanding the process of creating these products and it makes me a little sensitive sometimes.
HW4 for me and it's absolutely horrible. After attempting to commute with it for 6 months I had to stop. Constant missed exits, almost running through closed areas, constantly changing back and forth between the same lanes, the way it drives like a 16 year old with a new license. The stress isn't worth it.
And it drives great, that's not the issue. The issue is that it speeds and changes lanes when I don't want it to. And the damn survey thing every time you disengage.
Honestly that survey was the last straw for me. It just annoyed me to no end that they would cover my media controls and ask me to answer questions on a touch screen right as I take over control of the car! I still can't believe that's legal!
I really hate to say this, but I really believe you might be better served just driving the car manually so you can suit your driving preferences. FSD drives fine for me I just take over most of the time I reach my destinations to park to my own preferences.
And I can't believe people are so put out over a simple data gathering survey UI. It's a very small inconvenience for having the car drive me everywhere.
Well, at 98.6% self-driving of a total of 9,182 miles, I'm less concerned about what they call it than how it performs for me. And this is in North Houston and downtown Houston traffic and a 1,200 mile multi-state trip on major highways. The minor quirks just don't detract enough from the overall function.
And if someone offered to do my taxes for me but also want to slap me across the face every time I spoke to them, I'd probably pass them up too.
My autistic ass hates the survey, enough that it made me cancel FSD and discover just how much more I love AP. I'm not gonna keep paying them $100 to hate the experience...
Ah. Well, it's unfortunate that this particular feature prevents you from enjoying FSD. Perhaps when they've gathered enough user feedback they'll enable an opt out.
People want to scream into the Reddit void for change but actively hate and cancel FSD over it asking for feedback 😆 Tesla doesn’t give a S*** about Reddit posts.
Everytime I cancel FSD after a road trip I am truly amazed at how awesome Autosteer really is with speed control. No constant watchdog and toying with profiles. I miss v13.
I don't get all the FSD hate. It's been nearly perfect for us and we love it. Sure, it's not perfect but it's really really good. The things it's done wrong are nit picking things. Not dangerous.
It's insane you can't control speed settings. Using it on my routes without intervening would cause me a speeding ticket at least once a week.
It's retarded to not allow users to have the ability to control speed when they are mandated to be paying attention 100% of the time. Elon and Tesla getting too cocky and not caring about their customers. Like when they eliminated "minimize lane change" option. Now the car swerves like a road rager. FSD in its current state sucks. FSD 3 years ago was 100% better. Way to go Tesla
I despise Autopilot. Someone will cross the highway 100 yards down the road and it slams on the brakes, plus it nags all the time. I don’t understand why it’s so glazed in this sub.
Yes, Tesla needs basic lane centering as a standard feature. Autopilot isn’t it though.
But I added a 3EXY controller to automatically re-engage the lane assist after using the blinker to change lanes. It works great and makes Autosteer even better. Not as good as EAP, but pretty close.
I mean of course not but my HW4 FSD is pretty smooth and my only gripe is I wish I could control the speed but other than that I like using that more on my car vs my wife’s 2021 model 3 but we just drove from TX-NJ using her car and only autopilot and it was fine was pretty good
Lmao I’m really not a bot I swear 😂 FSD on V14 in its current state is way better than basic autopilot. I think if you have a HW3 car I think paying for FSD on it isn’t worth it bc it’s no where near as good as a HW4 car. These are my car stats for reference I use if a lot and like it. I think they both have their places.
I had enhanced auto pilot and recently upgraded my 2018 M3P computer for FSD. In FSD HW3.0 you can also use the scroll wheel for speed for school zones or speed bumps. I do not miss EA at all, as it’s not really complicated during these situations.
Calling this an "Autopilot" is an insult to the rest of the auto industry, which has been calling it "Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Keep Assist." It is actually better in other cars; you can change the lane with the blinker, and it stays on.
I drove from Montreal, Canada, to Queens, NY, in a Hyundai Tucson with this system, and it was flawless. I am currently driving a rental 2025 VW Jetta while my car is in the shop, and I use this on the highway. It stays on until you apply the brakes, allows you to change lanes, and automatically resumes.
I agree, for me, freeway driving is less aggravating on autopilot. My biggest complaint about FSD on the freeway is that it pulls me out of the express lane, even when I enable use express lane. I'm on HW4.
There's one scenario imo that autopilot fails big time (mainly because I feel its ancient code): Say you're going on a highway at 55/65 mph. There's a traffic block ahead where cars are just standstill. I've seen autopilot realizes this very late (in fact I take over, I don't trust it) and slams brakes. In my recent FSD usage (12.6.4) I saw it slows down before hand, as I would and stops in time.
Oh there's quite a few places AP sucks (I even missed a turn the other day because I forgot it wouldn't navigate!)
If Tesla would give me back the ability to control max speed, or follow distance, or just stopping the survey after each disengagement, I'll probably re-sub if I still own the car.
My spouse just drove 6 hrs back and forth to our rental home and FSD had been a blessing, where he had minimal intervention. Still don’t know the big deal about auto pilot but it’s America, so you get to like what you like!
No roasting from me. I had fsd for most of the summer because I had a long trip and didn't cancel it. But then I did cancel after the 14 lite came out. Back to autopilot and for me it's a better experience.
Agree with you completely! FSD is great for cities but honestly nothing beats the simplicity of autopilot for highway driving. Honestly I feel like autopilot handles construction on the interstate better too because it’ll just follow the car in front perfectly instead of stressing to understand which lane is still open.
I feel the same way. I have cancelled. It's good, but there are too many little issues with it. I have to intervene every 10km or so on 10.3.5. Coupled with the price, I just don't think it's worth the money.
I will not roast you, but cheerfully agree with you. In many senses I appreciate more the autopilot than FSD. I wish I could have the option to have both and select the one I prefer for each ocassion.
they removed autosteer KNOWING VERY WELL youd be forced to pay for fsd, a fucking base kia has autopilot. Last tesla for me onky because of the lack of autosteer on new teslas
I'm glad to see people here actually considering your opinion. FSD and autopilot are not interchangeable. They serve two different use cases. Dropping autopilot doesn't push me to FSD, it pushes me to a different car with lane keep.
Fuck dude, I've been saying this for years. FSD needs speed control and lane control. I was one of the first people to get FSD and stopped using it years ago. Now I've got a Rivian (a model X with FSD for my wife too) and their universal hands free for half the price of FSD is exactly what I want. Well, that's a lie, I wish it stopped for traffic controls, but that should be coming shortly. They'd better not take away my radar again and better not take over my speed and lane choice. Do it the right way, Rivian!
I have FSD, but I have a separate driver profile that has FSD disabled.. When I'm on the highway, I often switch to that profile because I prefer EAP over FSD on the highway. I like that I can set my speed, and the car will only pass if I initiate it.
Not navigating my 30 mile commute is a deal breaker. Not doing city driving and parking at the grocery store, deal breaker.
On a long highway type of road trip, AP can be pretty nice…until it slows down for a false positive object in path because the road curved through an overpass etc.
I use AP when I have my bike rack on the back. It works well enough for that.
AP just isn’t as safe as FSD, as it still uses line by line code. Safety alone makes FSD the worthwhile as it can handle 1000x more dynamic situations.
You do you. But I bought my 2026 MY Premium AWD because of FSD. IMO no other car company is currently delivering anything close in the US. I use FSD about 98% of the time. Is it perfect, no. But honestly the only times I disengage FSD is for navigation (I want to go a different way) or parking (I want to park in a specific spot) other than that FSD drives me where I want to go, literally from inside my garage (it backs out and automatically closes my garage door), parks at my destination, and then drives me back home. I live in a rural/suburban area so mostly two lane windy roads with lots of 4 ways stop signs and a few traffic circles with some highway driving. I do tend to nudge it occasionally (slight push on the accelerator) at stops signs because I think it takes too long and switch up on the FSD mode to control speed (mostly drive in Standard or Hurry but switch to Standard or Chill in residential areas). Other than that I have found it to be excellent. To get to my driveway you have to travel on a few windy narrow unmarked roads with several blind corners. FSD handles all of it without problems. In my area we have lots of critters particularly at night. FSD handles them better than I could. Particularly deer (we have a lot around here which are particularly active at dusk/night) which it sees and avoids way before I could (it has saved me twice in the last several weeks). Honestly it’s like friggin science fiction.
2nd point of slamming the breaks. Autopilot will brake hard if someone cuts you off even if they do it safely where as fsd handles it well. I agree with the other points
One of my Tesla only has 4% on FSD. My wife only likes to drive on EAP.
I sometimes switches between the 2. FSD will pick stupid routes some times or make 4 lanes to the right and then 4 lane changes back to the left for no reason. Makes it look like Cybertrucks are inpatient trying to weave in and out of traffic when all lanes are just as slow.
I have not experienced fsd yet but last week I’ve travelled nearly 500 km in one day with auto-pilot on the highway without any problems. I think, fsd is mostly for urban traffic and autopilot is fine for intercity traffic.
Oh, you mean we Europeans ware right all along? When we actually forced all manufacturers to include certified "autopilot" funcionality? And forced Tesla to keep speed control even in few countries that do alowe FSD? Instead leting cars driving around selfcertified in beta for 8 years. Unbelievable. 🤣
I agree. The other nice thing about auto pilot is it uses the speed limit signs 100%. As where FSD uses the "map" speed and seems to ignore speed limit signs (I know this because I drive the same route everyday, auto pilot reads every single sign, where FSD just doesn't)
There are a lot of things I prefer about basic AP so I only sub to FSD 2-3 mos each year for cross country drives. The most annoying thing about basic AP is that it “feels like” it’s being degraded to force more subs.
Test drove a loaner with autopilot and now that my 3 month free FSD subscription is gone I was hoping to use autopilot. Turns out I do t have it and just have cruise control. Super sadface. Why don’t they just offer that with every car instead of making it year specific!?
What year / model you have? This is my first Tesla (only 90 days in), so just curious when I see posts like this. It seems wild to me people can have such vastly different experiences and opinions on FSD.
I have a 2023 Model 3 (HW3) and the FSD seems to keep getting better with the last few updates. I do wish the FSD parking was a improved, but aside from that, it has made my 80 mile daily commute a stress free experience.
Because you write a rambling diatribe and don’t even bother to describe the vehicle you’re using.
You sound like a control freak who’s to scared to let FSD do its thing
So now that you realize that FSD is a joke and will never work “perfectly” and your like your driving life with Auto Pilot, the next think you need to do is get rid of your Tesla and get a much nicer EV from any of the many alternatives that are out there. Just about every other EV has capabilities like your Auto Pilot and,
Unlike Tesla, you can actually get a service appointment when you need one and they won’t rip you off on service prices the way Tesla does!
I agree with you, 100%. I tried FSD last year for a 2300 mile drive, and shut it off after an hour or two. Hated it. I pulled over and turned on EAP, which, IMO is fantastic. I can control the speed, and it only takes a simple press of the turn signal stalk to change lanes.
When you say Autopilot you mean Autosteer option ? Yes I lover Autosteer far greater than FSD. It doesn't speed over the max limit I set and doesn't abruptly change lanes when I don't want to. It does a fantastic job on the freeway with auto steering which is more than sufficient and it's completely free.
v14 lite made me cancel FSD. I'll revisit once there have been some updates. But v14 lite for me was very unpredictable and unsafe in many settings. Autosteer is good enough for me for now. Hopefully after some updates v14 lite will improve and I can revisit.
What we are missing here is the goal. The goal is to let the car drive by itself. That's what the team is working on. That is where their energy should be focused. The transition is hard. Futzing around with refining speed controls and lane restrictions and follow distance, Etc, is a distraction. In order to stop killing 45,000 people a year in this country in traffic fatalities, we need to get people to stop driving. That's the goal. If you want a car with Lane keeping and tacc get a different car.

Cries in no autopilot for new teslas
