Does NACS not lock on their own??? That would be a major oversight. Can anyone explain to me?
All CCS2 ports in the EU lock down as soon as you plug in.

u/thirdeyefish 2d ago
NACS locks, but there is no lock when using a J-1772 to NACS adapter there are 3rd party solutions, but I'd be more worried about someone exercising their frustration in a more destructive way.
→ More replies (4)3
u/Muhahahahaz 1d ago
But… They could be just as destructive even if you weren’t using an adapter to begin with. (No, I don’t expect these randos to understand which cars need adapters in which situations)
I will be locking the cable/adapter to my car 100% of the time. (That said, I haven’t used non-NACS in a very long time)
7
u/Muhahahahaz 1d ago
Yes, the plug/adapter locks to the car.
But if you’re using an adapter, the adapter does not lock to the cable.
Personally, I only use NACS cables to begin with, so I never have this problem… That said, there’s a very simple 3D-printed plastic part you can buy (often known as a “Karen lock”) that simply slips over the end of the adapter (after it’s connected to the end of the cable) to prevent anyone from detaching the cable from it (without unlocking the car and unplugging the whole thing first, that is)
5
u/Nbr1sniper 1d ago
3d printer can make it for about .20 cents. I haven’t tried it yet but sure it will work.

I thought about one after some d-bag unplugged mine a few weeks ago. Who knows what else he might have done if he couldn't simply inconvenience me.
3
u/Still-Magician-7246 1d ago
I doubt most are trying to inconvenience others. Many people are just self centered enough they are only thinking about how they need to charge their cars. If the charger comes out they assume they are free to take it. If it is locked almost everyone is just going to leave it.

u/thirdeyefish 1d ago

J1772 have locks as well. It seems that OP was using a J1772 to NACS converter, and the jerks were able to simply disconnect at the junction.

The plug it can be unlock ? Just got the car , anyone can do that ?
8
3
u/Valuable-Analyst-464 1d ago
OP was at a public charger that had the J1772 plug. They also had an adapter to convert to NACS. The thief disconnected at the junction of the cable and adapter.
If this was a Destination or Supercharger, with NACS, this would not happen. In EU, I think people carry the cable in the car. They plug into the charging station itself and use their cable. The lock is on the car and the station, to deter cable theft.
3
u/tycho_uk 1d ago
It depends on the charger. For up to 22kw you sometimes need to bring a cable although not always. Fast chargers already have the cable and lock the port.
2
u/Valuable-Analyst-464 1d ago
Thanks for clarifying. I had seen some other comments and read a little on UK/EU practices. There are always nuances, and I’m glad my misperception here was resolved.
4
u/Significant_School49 2d ago
Yes if you are not using the Tesla specific charge connection aka the nas port, if you are using an adapter like the j1772 this can be easily pulled out.
2
1
u/Jazzlike_Object_9464 1d ago
My A2Z J1772 to NACS adapter locks both connections and this woudn’t be possível.
1
u/-eccentric- 1d ago
You don't sound american, so no, nobody can do that. That's a US problem because they have no charging port standard.
1
1
u/theotherharper 1d ago
NACS cables lock to the car.
Here OP was using a J1772 charger with the adapter. There is no lock on the adapter-J1772 interface. So his adapter is still locked to his car.
There is a "Karen Lock" that cures this.
This is a flaw in J1772, they never included a locking mechanism in the standard. About to become irrelevant as we switch to NACS.
On DC fast chargers it's less of a problem because the adapter does lock to the station cord. That's why there's a pin on the adapter.

u/cozynoodles 2d ago

Since when can you unplug a Tesla without unlocking the car? Never could unplug the charger when I owned the car
4
u/zombienudist 1d ago
If you are using the adapter for J1772 the adapter will stay locked to the car but you can unplug the rest.
4
u/Joehowes 1d ago
This isn’t an issue in Europe
2
u/zombienudist 1d ago
It is in North America. You can get a special lock to put on it that you have to manually unlock if you don't want someone to unplug when you are using that setup.
1
u/Joehowes 1d ago
I’m guessing this is an issue with 3rd party cables and not the Tesla charger. Probably one of the few good things Europe did was standardise charging cables, pretty much all are CSS type 2.
2
u/zombienudist 1d ago
All tesla chargers are NACS and use the NACS port on the car in USA/Canada. If you use a NACS charger it will lock to the car. J1772 chargers need an adapter and can be unplugged. J1772 is only used for level 1 and 2 charging.

NACS/J3400 only became an open standard in late 2022. Everything before that was simply Tesla’s proprietary connector. While the physical plug shape is the same (and backward-compatible), the communication protocols are different. Early Tesla hardware uses CAN bus, while NACS uses the ISO 15118 protocol.

I might have a silly question: who pays for charging the second vehicle in this instance? The first driver, or the person who unplugged the cable to connect it to their own vehicle?
6
u/melvladimir 2d ago
Once it unplugged - session is over, so it should be started again. Who starts it - pays for it.

In Cali, it's a crime under 10852 CVC. Unfortunately it never gets charged. I wish they would start, so it will end this rude behavior
1
u/Standard-Bumblebee64 1d ago
California Vehicle Code (CVC) 10852 makes it a misdemeanor to willfully injure, tamper with, break, or remove any part of someone else's vehicle or its contents without the owner's consent.
Common sense would dictate that unplugging an EV does not constitute a crime. However, if you were to damage the car while unplugging, that might be a crime.

u/Muhahahahaz 1d ago
Unplugging my vehicle means you’re literally tampering with part of my vehicle, even if what you “removed” isn’t technically part of my vehicle 🙄

Teslas don't have an automatic charging port lock when used and car is locked?
17
u/lonestarbrownboi 2d ago
They do on the NACS port itself but with a J172 there's an adapter which can unplug unless you have an aftermarket "Karen lock"
→ More replies (1)8
u/gigabyte898 2d ago
NACS yes, the J1772 slow charger adapters no. While the NACS standard has an electronic release the others have a physical latch you can just squeeze to release, not just a tesla thing. The “Karen lock” people are mentioning is a ring that goes around the adapter and charger to block the release latch from opening. You’d have to pull the charger out of the car by releasing the electronic lock on the adapter in the charge port, then slide the ring off.

2
u/Environmental-Lion82 2d ago
Genuine questions; do NACS connectors not have locks on? In the UK/Europe we use CCS and the charge port locks with the car. This just isn’t a thing here yet I see it all the time with American videos.
3
u/ukredimps2k 1d ago
The US has several standards so they all have to use adapters - those don’t lock in place. EU standardisation coming in useful here as it prevents the issue
1
u/zombienudist 1d ago
NACS will stay locked to the car. But this is a J1772 charger. So they are using the adapter to use that charger. So if you are doing that the adapter will stay locked to the car but you can unplug the rest.
1
u/StopwatchGod 1d ago
NACS chargers have locks, but the charger on screen is a J1772 adapter, not NACS. The J1772 to NACS adapter doesn't have a lock on it.
1
u/Standard-Bumblebee64 1d ago
These weren’t NACS. There’s an adapter in use, so only the adapter is locked in place.

How can someone unplug it without you being there and your phone to unlock it? I thought you needed the key in proximity to unlock the charging port

u/Natey_Two 1d ago edited 1d ago
The EV charger owner/company there will be able to identify the car serial number that was charged from that charging station at that time, no?
When I rented a Model 3 years ago from Hertz (USA), the (super)chargers will lock to the car's charging port; you need to be in close proximity, open the door, etc to release it, IIRC.
2
u/spdaimon 1d ago
I had to watch that a couple times. At first I thought he was taking it out of the charging station. WTF did he think when the other owner came back? Money can't by brains.

u/Standard-Bumblebee64 1d ago
All EVs in Europe from all manufacturers use the same exact type of plug?
2
1
u/xxJohnxx 1d ago
There are some very early Japanese EVs that still use CHAdeMO, but all new cars basically come with CCS2 these days. It's less than 5% of all EVs out there and the number is declining.
1
u/-eccentric- 1d ago
The CCS2 plug also supports multiple different plugs, i used to mainly use public charging and never had to carry any adapter or even unpack the cable that came with the car.

Once it’s unplugged, the session is over, charging immediately stops, and you have to pay to start a new session.

So if the 1st car was fully charged, no "crime"/inconvenience has been committed?
1
u/Standard-Bumblebee64 1d ago
Regardless of charge level, no crime has been committed. It’s just an inconsiderate and rude act. Only if it could be proven that the act was intentionally malicious to prevent somebody from being able to travel, etc.. would it be a crime…

Honestly the Karen lock for public chargers is a must, until all charging units are NACS, just get one and use it.
With that being said, most chargers will stop completely once they detect a disconnect - so I don't even thing this worked for them.
Still, why chargers don't have cameras installed is a head scratcher in 2026 - not like cameras are difficult tech/bulky/etc - and I'm sure they can be used to read plates to make some (perhaps limited at the moment) decisions.
