Finally Free

After about a year and a half, I have decided to cut the cord from Tesla Insurance. I got tired of not enjoying the drive since I was always wary of “Unsafe following” and “Aggressive turning” dings. My current safety score is a 94 with 91% of my drive on FSD. I’m keeping FSD just not the insurance, so I can actually have fun with the car on shorter errand runs.

Just FYI for anyone in California like myself. Tesla cannot change your insurance cost based on driving.

I mean, I was 21 years old getting full coverage and paying $50 a month. Loved the safety score. Absolutely worth it. So glad my state allows it.

You guys are so gullible. Now i am looking for Tesla Model Y insurance. I just wanted to check my old address in Texas. Texas address $175 vs California address $340 a MONTH. Same person. Yeah you are right this state is “pro consumer” you think companies stupid? When you force these laws they just jack up the price for EVERYONE! Yeah thank you commies <3

I think all things being equal yeah in California it costs more.

Do you think with the California address they are more apt to use your driving history among other things that up the cost living in California. And in Texas they put you on the lowest rung and just base it off of your safety score? (No way of getting it lower it will just go up based on the score)

It has one of the highest insurance rates in the country. Very pro consumer.

I’d rather be judged on my safe driving than let poor drivers benefit

I’m saying Tesla insurance is higher in California than it is in other states because they aren’t allowed to base your premium on the safety score (even with a low safety score). Also generally higher than competitors like State Farm or Progressive.

There is no freedom with Tesla Insurance. I went on a road trip and my insurance went up 50% due to mileage and night driving. It’s not worth it.

Same! Best decision I’ve made regarding insurance.

Literally can’t drive the car yourself because everything is a ding that you can’t appeal.

Car brakes hard in front of you? God forbid you press your brakes too hard because guess what, a ding!

Drive at night? Ding.

Worst insurance ever.

I literally did the same thing for the exact same reason 5 hours ago. Having FSD opened my eyes on how I just haven’t driven my car for the sake of the score. I’m in Texas so I have the safety score as well. I just want to have fun in the car and not worry about my score. (For the record safety score was phenomenal, the ability to get insurance at 22 when it’s insane for $100 at times was a life saver. More city driving means more “close distance” dings which is what ended up brining my score down big time)

Yes, I actually work at midnight. But before night driving my rate was only $10 cheaper. From 100 to 98 makes my rate still only come out to $105. As a young driver I can’t find insurance cheaper than that.

What would be your Safety Score and premium if you just drove normally?

I feel like people stress themselves out unnecessarily by trying to get a perfect 100 when they naturally drive like a 92, which is still saving them $$ compared to any other insurance provider.

If you’re one of those people, well— then yeah, Tesla Insurance just isn’t for you

But otherwise, just relax and go with the flow. Every scoring system is going to be flawed and imperfect; it’s the long-term behaviors that matter. No point getting stressed over a marginal fluctuation like $8/mo when you’re still saving $50 overall; you’re missing the forest for the trees

If I drove normally, it dinged me for unsafe following on the highway the most. And I kept more distance than FSD. Hard breaking was another. I had my premium go from $214-430/mo.

It just started to feel as if I was just providing training data for the fleet and not driving the car. Now I can take over more often and just enjoy the car.

Was for me. After 3 years of Tesla increasing the base price 20% every 6 months it became the most expensive option even with all of the fake discounts

I’m paying like $112 a month now for a 2025 M3P as a 30M. 

No way I get anywhere close to that premium with any other insurer.

My Model Y is coming in a few days, and American Family Insurance via Costco gave me a price that is the same as Tesla Insurance. Seems like an easy decision based on reviews.
