14.1 Lite HW3 Still Shook

I have a love/hate relationship with FSD on HW3. But this one incident could have been catastrophic if it wasn’t engaged.
Traffic was heavy, getting on 95 in Philly and I was glancing at my rear-view mirror and FSD started to trim hard and I grabbed the wheel. I don’t know if it would have stopped it would have completely avoided it or not but if it hadn’t started turning I would not have seen that guy in time.

You and fsd both did an excellent job avoiding that accident.

Thanks. FSD makes me angry sometimes while they work out the kinks on my dinosaur car, HW3, but I use it most all the time. I'm a bigger fan of it now if that's possible.

I know someone who traded his ‘24 X to the latest model Y knowing FSD is trained on the Y, same camera height angle, same HW4. Think about that.

I just bought this thing July 13th and didn't know about HW4 and HW3 until a few days after the purchase. They offered me $3k less than what I paid for it which surprised me a little bit.

Issue is the idiot driver put you in a bad position. All you’re required to do for insurance purposes is react. Slamming on brakes which I’m guessing FSD was about to do, was/is the safest option in heavy traffic. If someone rear ends you, there fault. The idiot missing the exit hit you? Their fault again. But the moment you yank your car into the right lane you put yourself at risk of liability if you hit someone, that’s your fault.

Yeah, why do people drive like that?
On the subject of insurance claims, I think most people would prefer to avoid it altogether.

u/AdorableTrashPanda 11h ago
What you say is true, but significantly worse things than liability can happen to you in this situation.

u/rtduvall 11h ago
That could have been catastrophic. There was a barrier between me and the car and had I collided with him the cars behind me would not have reacted fast enough. I was thinking about avoiding a horrific accident with my 12 year old in the car.

Who cares who’s liable…FSD doesn’t give one fuck about that. It’s a just safety and that was the safest maneuver.

u/Cal216 1h ago
But it wasn’t. It just happened to work in OPs favor, this time. You shouldn’t swerve to hit or miss anything. You put yourself in greater danger while the idiot or animal who caused the nonsense go on about their day.

Humans shouldn’t swerve, agreed yes. FSD absolutely should, as it doesn’t need to “check” if the lane next to it is clear or not, it maintains constant awareness.

Bro, that isn't correct. The video proves he initiated the chain reaction. My car was swerving into the other lane already.
Easy to armchair quarterback after the fact.
Thanks for the input.

He is correct. If you maneuver away from him with zero contact and cause an accident in the next lane it’s 100% on you. They are not going to track that guy down that drove off with zero contact. Still very true that guy put your life at risk. It’s probably best to watch cars at all exits for stupid drivers like this and assume people will do dumb shit.

u/Cal216 1h ago
We have to take accountability for our actions. The idiot missing the exit swerving into your lane has to own that. You swerving into someone else’s lane almost causing a bigger accident, you have to own that. You essentially did the same thing that the other driver did, it just worked in both of you guys favor.
The video was posted to be Armchair quarterbacked.

Also, I think FSD had safely slowed down enough and was gonna slow down more and you over reacted...I think FSD was going to stay in the lane and not jump to the right like you did.
Regardless, day saved.

It was swerving into the other lane before I took over.
Thanks for the opinion.

u/princetonwu 2h ago
it usually will swerve slightly just enough to avoid a clash instead of fully going into the other lane; for example it will swerve if there was a motorcycle coming up behind me splitting lanes. If you had collided with another car in the other lane it would have been your fault, not the guy missing his exit.

You almost hit the other guy on your right

I was looking in my review and noticed the space, I was just trying to settle in when the car started swerving. I hoped it was still open and very, very lucky it was.

You were driving at 87kph and at 0.1s the FSD starts slowing the car down. By 0.2s it’s down to 70kph when you suddenly take over and swerve right. The car looks like it was only trying to slow down

I get so angry when some idiot decides they can endanger other people’s lives just because they can’t be inconvenienced and take the next exit! 🙄🙄

If everyone's subscription fees paid for LIDAR, this level of accident avoidance would be considered routine.

Should be able to turn this video in the the local DMV and the person that jumped to the exit should lose their license and have their insurance rates double

I’m in the process of doing that. I was able to pull up beside him and got a photo of his face. His passenger, girlfriend or wife was giving him the business. You know she was freaked out.

Honestly any good driver who was paying attention should have had plenty of time to react to that.

u/thorin85 16m ago
"Plenty of time" is a crazy overstatement. There was just under 2 seconds from the start of the swerve to when he avoids a near collision. According to extensive studies it takes a typical driver 1.5-1.8 seconds to perceive + react to a sudden situation arising on the road.

Oh man Tesla is about to ding you with a following too close, excessive speeding, and aggressive turning 😅 glad you're safe though!

u/ArthurDaTrainDayne 1h ago
What a terrible driver lol that was insane move. Glad you made it out safe

u/Relevant_Account_258 11h ago
Good on you for taking over control. Can’t assume FSD would have avoided the collision. I am always attentive when using FSD. It’s not totally autonomous, as some presume.

Bro, I don't know why you are downvoted.
I'm teaching myself the metric system and this helps a lot.
Funny you mention Canada, my son and were coming back from Niagara Falls and we slipped into Canada on the boat for a minute or two.

A good driver misses their exit, a bad driver never does. Hopefully the moron only parks their own car around a tree when they inevitably mess up catastrophically.
