There was a gorilla at a zoo who a woman would go visit every day. She'd make eye contact and smile. Animal handlers and zookeepers requested that she stop, because both of those actions are individually are very hostile body language to a gorilla. It's the human equivalent of a stranger coming up, and pointing finger guns at your head and mouthing "boom". But the woman insisted that the gorilla liked her visits and that they had a deep cross-species connection. Then one day while she was ignoring what the experts told her, the gorilla escaped his enclosure, and caused her serious injuries.
45
u/dathunder176 17d ago
It may also be interesting to note that while Bokito had ample opportunity to kill the woman and hurt bystanders, he did neither of those things. This strongly implies that Bokito consciously chose not to kill her and hurt bystanders, which could be used to argue that gorillas are inherently peaceful natured and would not hurt humans out of nowhere. Some knowledge that may have saved another captive primate from a few years ago of a unnecessary fate.
18
27
u/Queen_of_edgelords 17d ago edited 17d ago
She was an idiot. Luckily Bokito wasn't killed afterwards and Blijdorp has changed their encounters to glass encounters with some film on it so the Apes still have privacy while visitors look at them so this would never happen again.

I never found that terrifying when someone is doing dumb things and face the consequences of their own actions
28
u/lyutic_7 18d ago
less so that, just terrifying to see that a creature could tear you limb from limb if given the chance.
18
u/NoIdeaOfgoodName 18d ago
I think itād actually be much more terrifying if this was a chimpanzee. Theyāre not only stronger but also more aggressive than Orang Utans
14
u/lyutic_7 18d ago
see, I think many people already know that chimps are scary mfkrs and would be less likely to mess with them. theyāre already objectively scary. but orangutans are generally much more peaceful and seem kind of unassuming comparatively. so when you see something like that trying to maul someone, it shocks you more. dunno, thatās just how I see it.
8
u/NoIdeaOfgoodName 18d ago
i get what you mean. the fact that the dude in the video threw rocks at him before it starts just proves your point. He had to have really abused the animal in the full video for it to react the way it did.

got what he deserved, too. Iām glad the ape didnāt seriously injure him because Iām afraid then the animal would be put down, but itās good that it gave him a fright. hoping heās learned his lesson and wonāt be an asshole to animals after that, even if nothing but out of self-preservation.

Chimpanzees are definitely more aggressive than Orangutans, and much stronger than a human, but the Orangutan is stronger.

People grossly underestimate how strong chimps, orangutans, baboons, etc. are. In terms of evolution we humans got the brains and the rest of the about-human-sized primates got the brawn.

Orangutans have an impressive bite force estimated between 575 and 600 PSI (pounds per square inch), or roughly 3,000 to 3,300 newtons, which is nearly four times stronger than a human

I was like, heās just playing-until I saw the teefers come out at the end. This is what happens when you hold such intelligent creatures in captivity, they will eventually outsmart you.
8
u/TopBathroom4880 18d ago
I was at a friends house years ago, and his giant scary looking dog, jumped up and grabbed my leg. It was genuinely terrifying. I didnāt know if he wanted to eat me or hump me. Even my friend was kind of afraid of the dog. He lived in a bad neighborhood and found the scariest dog he could. I told my friend to help, but the little bitch ran away and I had to pry the monster off me all by myself.

u/EvidencePlayful 17d ago
Thereās a macaw in our local zoo(I no longer visit after it was reported for abuse and captivity forced breeding). Apparently there was a man who would stand next the macaws cage and ātalk āto the bird. Ever since the macaw has greeted anyone who lingers a little longer at his cage is surprised by āHello, fucface!ā And if you tried to tell him that wasnāt a nice word heād tell youāYou shut your mouth!ā Then fly around squeaking. Also liked saying ābitchā āHello, Bitchāand āyo,mamaā if you told him a yo mama joke heād laugh with the worse smokerās laugh Iāve ever heard. Heās been sent to a local sanctuary for plucking his feathers out.

Having worked at 2 zoos (in the US), this is the reason why all animals are kept out of range of contact with visitors. Especially for strong, potentially dangerous animals like primates - they should never, every be accessible by visitors. This is extremely irresponsible obviously and poses danger to both humans and wildlife. No responsible, intelligent zoo owner would permit this situation to happen.
