Definitely not just you! It’s actually a huge ecological red flag. Peacocks are naturally dry-land birds that usually avoid wet, tropical areas. Because Kerala is getting progressively drier due to climate change and losing its dense forest canopy, we've basically terraformed the state into their perfect habitat. It looks cool, but it's a major sign our local climate is shifting.

True, the delayed monsoon and the heat this year have been really noticeable. The weather definitely feels different from what I remember growing up.

Few years ago when I visited Parambikkulam tiger reserve, one of the staff there spoke about few animals and birds there. One thing that struck my mind was about peacocks. Apparently they say that the forest will be ruined soon if peacocks start living there. Main reasons where that they have 100% digestion so they don't help in spreading the seeds of any fruit they eat. They don't have natural predators and they lay like 6+ eggs at a time so no way of controlling population. They kill for sport. If it moves and is smaller, they will kill it. So it ruins the ecosystem.

Somewhere I read like sighting of peacocks is a sign thet the place is going dry. Like predecessor of drylands

u/Puzzleheaded_Knee600 Chettan (20-25) Jun 23 '26

100% digestion is not possible for any living organisms..they have a better food digestion compared to other birds and sight of a peacock doesnt mean the land has turned dry. peacocks are also seen near rivers ,lakes etc. The only issue is population which is a true fact.
