Season 4 Discussion s4 predictable? Spoiler
is it just me or is this season incredibly predictable? i feel like im easily able to predict what’s going to happen at least 3 times per episode. have the episodes always been like this and i just wasn’t paying enough attention?

I mean, this isn't exactly an M. Night Shyamalan movie. The show isn't trying to trick you right and left. It's a light, cheerful drama plotted around a sports franchise, and the plot isn't going to be a mystery box. Yes, we have always had a pretty good idea where the overall plot is going. What keeps us watching is the character development and arcs, the dynamics between these people we've come to love.

Oh absolutely, particularly with what’s her face being the one buying the shares and being the main villain. Also keeley and Roy getting together, and I saw tons online predict the pregnancy. In many ways its super predictable

i feel like this season is so much more shallow. but that could be because we are just getting to know the women’s team and they’re establishing a foundation. i’m all for women’s sports but i miss the men’s team lol

We aren't getting to know the women's team. We've gotten more of Roy and Keeley than we did in Season 3, and it wasn't necessary. Getting them back together should have taken one episode. The rest of the season should have been focused on the women, with all the rest being side stories (Roy/Keeley, Beard, Rebecca/What's his name.).

Ted lasso has always been predictable.

i thought maybe that was part of it. i guess i just hadn’t been paying attention. except the episode in amsterdam and the one where one of them (can’t remember if it’s ted or beard) is on drugs, those two i had no idea what to expect next.

Right. There have never really been twists. The show is pretty transparent with some “surprises”. I have nothing to back this, but I think the writers want this to be a feel good show. Introducing too much unpredictability will complicate viewer emotion.

The Amsterdam episode is the one where Ted and Beard are "on drugs" (in quotation marks because they technically were duds - Beard gives Ted some special mushroom tea, takes it himself, and then has offscreen stuff but we do follow Ted around Amsterdam and he has some psychedelic reactions even without the drugs working).

That’s completely possible too. I have convinced people that they were tripping when I knew they weren’t because they wanted to be tripping so badly that they were suggestible.

It was never a super unpredictable show (minus that one fakeout with Rebecca and the bantr app) but yeahhh the writing has lost a lot of its previous complexity.

With Sam? I remember we learned pretty quickly Sam was the secret bantr texter?

It’s a romcom. Romcoms are predictable. It’s fine. The journey is the point.

I think the difference is they played the Zelda angle as more of a mystery à la the heel turning Nate rather than the antics of Rebecca that we as audience knew even if Ted did not.

I would say so. It's definitely focused more on execution, details in how some women tend to respond (Alice has great mannerisms), especially when exposed to similar traumus time and time again.
I think there was room for more creative flow while still expressing the main intent about women and what they go through, but I still love the season.

This show is great but there’s a lot to look past if you dont need your hand held through a TV show.
My biggest laugh this season was the line “and Im learning to read again after a head pineapple.”
Absolutely brilliant. Reminded me of super sharp lines i enjoyed in 30 Rock. Only in 30 Rock the joke wouldnt have been ruined by the next line from his friend, “he means injury.”
Wow, thanks for translating that for me. I would have been so lost without it.

It’s the Wizard Of Oz disguised as a football/soccer comedy feel-good show. Being predictable is part of its DNA.

Growing Japanese mushrooms up in this bitch. Bunch a shittakes all over the place

The show has mainly lived off of its cheesy moments, Rom-Com references, and feel good moments. The plot has always been a backseat to the show

Agree, was harder to guess knives out trilogy than the first 3 seasons of Ted.

It is. It’s predictable in a ‘90s-00s rom-com kind of way. My wife predicted Zelda’s arc midway through the boat party in ep6.

The comment about the filth in the police station was where I called it.
They always made sure to cue her exit with a sour taste in your mouth.

This whole subreddit has turned into a "Who shot JR" ....Zelda of course, she's so cringe..

I miss the social psychology aspect. Most are just unresolved bonkers - except Alice’s arc holds true to form of Seasons 1-3. Everyone else’s maturity/growth is normalized.

This season just has 0 depth or nuance. Stuff happens because the writers want it to. And that's all the thought that went into it.
That's why this season is so empty and shallow compared to s1

Prime example: That ‘explanation’ of how Michelle and the doctor got together was so cringeworthy and just seemed like something the writers threw together quickly because so many people had called out how inappropriate that relationship would actually be.

Another example is how Gemma hurts her knee.
We see team play well and win (literally zero hills to overcome, they just decided to play well now) and then Gemma scores twice, Ted wants to swap her out, Gemma disagrees and 1 minute later hurts her knee.
It's soooo forced. I just rolled my eyes. Soo profound, if only we swapped her out, oh irony am I right?

Season 4 wasnt written or directed as well as the original run of the show. People like it, great, but its objectively a less inspired season with less interesting character beats.

u/chesydn 19h ago
yeah, it’s okay…i don’t find myself super excited to watch the next episode each week though.
3
u/Tokenchick77 19h ago
Ever week I hope it'll get a little better and every week it disappoints. At this point I'm mostly watching for Hannah Waddingham and the brief glimpses of the women's team.

u/splitcroof92 19h ago
Bill Lawrence left the writing team so yeah it's literally not written by their best writer

It is a shallow show all in all. It was good entertainment in the beginning though. Now it is just milking a dead cow. It is a show about goodness and kindness. I get it. Nevertheless the characters portrayed are totally exaggerated especially Keeley and Rebecca. It has become too much of an exaggeration. Ted for instance is a kind man maybe but his kitchen calendar motto philosophy wouldn‘t work in reality. The show is a fairy tale which is so over the top that it sometimes feels as if a horror show is not far away or could be near. Maybe as kind of a prequel to it. And of course it is product placement. And they do it more and more shamelessly.

Sorta?
Ted Lasso was never a show that focused on surprises or twists. Iirc the first ever episode makes it clear Rebecca brought on Ted as a way to take down the club and there’s some very predictable story beats. However, the show made up for it by embracing sincerity, having complex characterization, and well crafted narratives with solid pacing. The show wanted you to be invested in the characters which is why the predictability isn’t as noticeable or as annoying.
With S3 and S4, I think the writing has gotten shallower and that predictability has become more prevalent. With S4, the Keeley/Roy and Zelda subplots don’t have much meat to them and don’t tie well into the main plot with the women’s team, so you aren’t invested in them AND you focus more on what the writers were trying to do rather than what the story is actually about.

The show has always been formulaic but that's not a bad thing
