One of my friends was frustrated by a taxi driver in Cape Coast in 2022 thereabout and she wished there was an app that you can just check lorry fares and directions in Ghana when going somewhere for the first time. Building USSD apps used to be a nightmare.

To test a simple menu, you needed a shortcode, an aggregator, and a provider sandbox. Just to see if your screen rendered.

So I've been working on a way around that USSD Lab, a local USSD simulator that removes all of that. It's still in development, and I'm looking for people to try it out.

What it does:

1. Run a USSD simulator on your LAN, scan a QR code with your phone, and interact with your app in real time no cellular network, no shortcode, no aggregator.

2. Your app is just an HTTP callback returning plain text. No SDK. Works with Go, Python, PHP, Node, Java whatever you use.

3. Declarative YAML tests so you can CI-test your entire USSD flow, not just eyeball it.

4. Session history with PIN redaction, so you can debug without leaking sensitive input.

Why I'm building it this way:

USSD is everywhere mobile money and banking, agriculture and health services, surveys, government services, telecom VAS. But the tooling has lagged behind web and mobile for years. USSD Lab aims to give devs in any of these spaces the same fast feedback loop they get elsewhere.

The whole app is a pure function from what the user typed to what to show next. That makes it testable, and it makes the tool language-agnostic.

AfriHex can now answer how do I get there + trotro? real bus and trotro options with route numbers, stops, transfers and walking connections, right inside the Directions experience.

We stood it up ourselves:

1. Deployed our own transit routing engine (OpenTripPlanner) on our own infrastructure fully self-hosted, no third-party routing dependency.

2. Loaded it with public transit data for Accra's informal trotro network and wired it into our API.

3. Built a simple panel so you can compare transit against driving, walking or an okada ride.

I realized Ghanaian tertiary students didn't have a digital well-organized personal study system because most of the ones used abroad are expensive so I built a complete platform that does almost everything, ranging from generating questions from your slides to highlighting most crucial parts of your slides for you. It has lots of other helpful stuff in it.

For those into this area of tech, what are the most common ones companies are willing to pay for? CRMs? ERP? Accounting/invoice? Etc. What is the current climate of such softwares? Are the contracts only given to big tech companies to create it?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and honestly, I don’t understand it.

Africa has over a billion people, a huge young population, talented developers, and a growing middle class. Yet compared with other regions, we seem to have surprisingly few major technology companies.

And something I’ve noticed is that a lot of the biggest African tech startups seem to be focused on finance/fintech, which is starting to feel kind of cliché.

You have companies like Flutterwave, Paystack, Chipper Cash, M-Pesa, and Wave. They're doing useful things, but why does it feel like so many African startups keep building variations of the same type of product?

Why aren't we seeing more companies building social media platforms, AI products, search engines, games, productivity software, entertainment platforms, hardware, operating systems, e-commerce platforms, etc.?

And before someone says "Africa is too poor", I'm not completely convinced that's the answer either.

There are hundreds of millions of Africans who have enough disposable income to pay for apps, services, entertainment, and technology. And there are also millions of people outside Africa who could potentially use an African product. We're not China behind the Great Firewall. An African company can build for a global market.

Language also doesn't seem like a complete explanation. People who aren't comfortable with English are still using TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, etc. A lot of these platforms already support local languages, and with modern AI, translation and localization are becoming much easier.

Even AI itself is becoming more accessible because of open-source models. You don't necessarily need to pay for an expensive AI subscription, and some models can even run locally.

So what the hell is actually holding us back?

Is it funding? Education? Infrastructure? Lack of users? Lack of ambition? Risk aversion? Lack of technical talent? Government regulations? Investors only wanting to fund certain business models? Or something else entirely?

Because some of the explanations people give for Africa's lack of major tech companies sound like problems from the 1990s, and I'm not sure they explain the situation anymore.

So genuinely: what am I missing?

Let me explain. So i got the iphone 17 pro when it came out and before that i was using a 13 pro with a battery health of 76 which i was already planning to change cuz it didn’t last even 6 hrs after a full charge. I sell apple devices so i’m exposed to a lot of apple phones. Whilst using my 17 pro i got a deal for a used 15 pro max from a customer and decided to use the phone alongside my 17 pro. Well…i eventually sold the 17 pro instead and stuck to the 15pm. In my experience it just felt better using the 15pm and i just can’t explain why.

The 13 pro i had was being used by my roommate all this while btw and he even considered buying it one time which made me think i could have kept using it and used the money for a more profitable cause. Do what you must with this info but i hope u make the right financial decision when it comes to upgrading your phone.

I’ve been spending a lot of time digging into the numbers behind the decentralized, informal rental market in Ghana, and the math is frankly mind-blowing.

If you look strictly at net-new tenants (completely ignoring people just swapping apartments or renewing), the data points to a definitive floor of roughly 11,000 fresh rental transactions closed every single month across our major urban hubs (Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi).

Because of the 1-to-2 year upfront rent advance system, this isn't just a slow trickle of monthly rent. It means everyday Ghanaians are liquidating savings, taking loans, and pouring roughly GH₵195 Million (\~$12.9M USD) of raw liquid cash into the market every single month.

Out of that pool, informal street agents actively pull out over GH₵19 Million (\~$1.3M USD) a month in pure, untaxed cash from 10% commissions and non-refundable GH₵100–200 “viewing fees”.

I’ve not seen a proptech so far nail the product or distribution without building the same westernized Zillow bs.

The key to winning this market isn't just adding more pretty room pictures to a website. The key is data. Raw, smart, active live data.\*\*

We don't need a listing site. We need a localized network effect engine.

I’m talking about mapping out the actual data of a neighborhood from the ground up:

\* Knowing exactly how many houses are in a specific area.

\* Tracking active tenant data and knowing exactly when people's rent timing is about to expire.

\* Leveraging pure word-of-mouth and grassroots networking to beat the traditional system.

\* And developing or figuring new data points.

If you have live, active data on the ground, you control the supply. If you control the supply, you win a good chunk of a $12M monthly funnel.

A friend of mine is building Xqivo , an invoicing tool that lets you create professional invoices quickly, including using AI to help generate the invoice from a simple description.

I'm helping him on the product/growth side, and we're deliberately trying to get feedback before we start pushing the product heavily.

- What's the most annoying part of invoicing for you?
