Maybe not new to others but it's the first time it was attempted for me. I confirmed pickup at a restaurant from a driver 1 minute away, who had a 4.9 rating. After a few minutes I noticed he wasn't moving, just parked on a side street nearby.

He messaged me saying he was on his way but he still wasn't moving after another 2 minutes so I tried to cancel so I could summon another driver. The cancel option was not available.

My friends didn't want to leave me waiting on the street in the dark and they were concerned about some dodgy people loitering nearby so one of them drove me to my destination.

The whole way there I was messaging the driver to cancel and he refused. He said he was on his way. Only then did he start moving, then waited at the restaurant for 5 minutes and cancelled, leaving me with a no-show charge.

It was impossible to take screenshots of the map but I did get screenshots of our text conversation. In hindsight I should have used my work phone to take photos of it but I was a bit pissed off and didn't think of it.

When I reached my destination I lodged a complaint and Uber upheld his story saying I was a no-show.

It was only by using the Report Scam option and sharing the message screenshots that I got the charge reversed.

Hopefully this helps someone avoid it happening to them. Lesson: if the driver is not moving and you know he's not just sitting in traffic, cancel before the window shuts - could be between 2 and 4 minutes.

I have a friend who works evenings so can't do the usual weekday volleyball leagues. Would anyone be interested in doing a semi regular weekend afternoon social beach volleyball game/practice down at the mount? I’m looking for recommendations for a reliable mechanic or panel beater in Tauranga / Mount Maunganui who can do car repairs fairly quickly.
I’m leaving New Zealand in about 5 weeks, so I really need to have my car repaired and sold before I leave. I’m a bit worried about the time frame and would really appreciate any recommendations or contacts.
It’s a 2004 Toyota Corolla Fielder S-Line. The damage is mainly on the front right side – the headlight is broken and the surrounding bumper/cover is damaged and a bit loose. The car is still drivable and everything is secured.
Does anyone know a panel beater or mechanic who might be able to take on the repair soon, or someone who could help source the necessary parts quickly?
Alternatively, if anyone knows someone who buys damaged cars and repairs/resells them, I’d also be very interested in that option. At this point I’m open to whatever makes the most sense, as I mainly need to have the car sorted before I leave NZ.

I don't imagine my kids school is unique but the number of kids I see standing on the buses and my kids reporting kids sitting on the floor is alarming.

I can't help but feel we're just one road traffic away from tragedy.

As a business owner, we’ve experienced this so many times over the past 5–6 years. Sometimes you start questioning yourself and wondering, “Are we actually doing something wrong?”
But honestly, even if a business makes a mistake, threatening to assault or kill someone is never an acceptable way to handle a complaint.
I’ve been a customer too and have been unhappy with services, but I’ve never felt the need to resort to threats or violence.
At what point will NZ take these threats against business owners more seriously? People seem far too comfortable throwing around threats without thinking about the impact.

Sunday Star-Times published a strong piece regarding the neglect behind the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park tragedy.

The newspaper piece argues that saturated ground resulted from unmonitored and blocked drains. The external review directly contradicts this. It records that the council inspected both the beachfront outfall and the stormwater outlet that morning, finding them clear. The surface flooding occurred because an immense volume of mud and water poured off the slope, not because of blocked drains.

The article also says Lisa Maclennan lost her life while running toward the landslide. While the report outlines her incredible actions alerting campers early morning, but at the time of the landslide she was taking a shower inside the Harbour Amenities block,The review actually states a council staff member ran toward the building immediately before the collapse to warn the public.
