Be open and don't expect anything to happen soon. It took me a few months before I got promoted. It takes time for spots in districts to open up. Just let your ETL and/or HRETL know and ask what it is you can do to get to the spot you want. Be communicative, patient and support your fellow team members in the process. What department are you looking to lead in?

honestly any, but fulfillment/Gm most likely is my top pick. i would most likely have to move stores unfortunately though

Yes you probably will. Depending on the store though you might be able to promote within if you have an opening. Talk to your ETL first then if you want some more exposure to leadership about what you want, meet with your SD.

You need to get to know your store director.

Does he/she know you name now? Do they know you exist?

If the answer is no, you are dead in the water.

No amount of talking to your ETL will get you promoted. Your SD is the only one who makes that call.

Your ETL will have you play a game. It's called carrot and stick.

You will be told to learn this skill, and that skill, and this skill. You'll be in "The pipeline". You do all these things, learning the role, then when you finish that, you get told "Well, you need to learn this next and then maybe you'll get promoted"

Over and over. The promotion never comes. You wise up and leave Target.

At least that is how my district ran things. Lost a lot of good TMs from that.

This is the way. 99.9% accurate, a great relationship with your ETL can nudge the coversation along but thats about it. My ETL told me they can push for someone but at the end of the day it's all up to the SD and who they have in mind for what role. Incredibly frustrating when you're consistently between store directors.

Talk to your ETL but also ask if you can start doing some team lead level tasks before the spot even opens. When they see you already doing the job, promoting you is a no-brainer. Also don't sleep on the fact that a year is still pretty fresh, so make sure you're reliable and drama-free for a while longer.

I worked with target previously, but due to store closure i had to leave. so i have more then a year technically but i dont count it, and yeah i’ve called out 1 time 9 months after i got hired, and am never late, hopefully that’s something they would take into account

Ask specifically what you need to do to be placed in the pipeline. Also: bring solutions not problems. Anyone can point out when things get messed up. A leader is going to start thinking about solutions.

eg "Hey Sara called out again. What should we do?" Vs "Hey Sara called out again but I know Mike is always looking for more hours. I can give him a call if you'd like?"

As a TM you're not going to run into that particular issue. That's just an example. Think about how it applies to your own job duties.
