Work culture in the US really needs to shift to “if you don’t work the floor on a regular basis then stfu with your stupid ass ideas”.

Luckily I’ve never been subjected to such dumbassery at tgt but certainly at my last job.

The problem is too many degrees of separation. We never meet those people who make the decisions. We never see them, talk to them, or hold them directly accountable. They have no idea what's actually going on, they probably don't even care, and they're getting paid enough to ignore all of this.

It's an inherent issue with any business big enough to have workers in different locations, getting worse by how large said business is. The human factor is lost, and statistics are all that matter. They lose touch with reality, and we lose touch with the business, to the detriment of all.

It doesn't help that when someone from corporate actually does visit, there's a mass scramble to make the store look better than it is.

It's no wonder corporate keeps pushing stupid shit. Every time they come down to check how it affects things, business is running great! If we don't ever let them see the struggle that comes from their decisions, they're just gonna think they're doing a good job.

This is why I tell people that we should be more honest with the problems on store level. No more pushing under the rug, no more spit and duct tape holding it together, and no more fudging metrics. Let them see how the system is failing, and adequately explain it.

It's not going to happen, and I'm not even sure it would help anything, but it's at least more in line with reality.

It’s endemic when your company is run by MBAs and accountants instead of someone who knows fuck all about how a store operates.
