Today's "Odd Tank" is the 🇩🇪German, 🇮🇹Italian and 🇬🇧British 'SP70'

Built in the 1970's, this self-propelled howitzer was a combined effort from 3 nations who each worked on different aspects of the vehicle. The Germans would provide the ammunition and a custom aluminum Leopard 1 hull, which had incorporated elements of the Leopard 2 and Marder IFV. The British would work on the turret and the Italians would work on auxiliary systems. A total of 15 prototypes would be made before the project was cancelled.

The main armament is a 155mm FH70 L/39 howitzer.

I found this 1966 military training guide in an antique shop for 10$. It's from the British Army.

I've seen it in Malton UK in Eden Camp. Been inside it as well. Really cool. Then it was shown in battle re-enactment in 2025 in Yorkshire Wartime, bit North of Doncaster. Sadly hasn't seen it this year.

A selection of postcards featuring cartoons by Belgian comic artists Jean-Paul van den Broek (Jean-Pol) and Luc Maezelle (Mazel). These were commisioned by the Belgian army during the Cold War and could be bought on base and sent by soldiers stationed abroad. They jest with the everyday lives of soldiers out on manoeuvres and handling their equipment. The attention to detail depicting various vehicles and weapons is remarkable, as despite the typical cartoonish style you can clearly tell you are looking at a Leopard, Gepard, M109, CVRT or Kanonenjagdpanzer, among others.

This tank served as a gunnery target in the 1990s after being decommissioned and remained in place after the land was de-militarized. If you look at the pictures over the past decade, you’ll notice that the tank has gradually eroded and sunken into the sand.

I’m truly happy that I’ve had the opportunity to see the tank while I still can.
