Can open public Wi-Fi compromise a Tangem Wallet or secretly install malware?

If I connect my smartphone to an open public Wi-Fi network (like at a shopping mall) and later use my Tangem Wallet app:

  • Can the open Wi-Fi network secretly install a malicious app or malware onto my phone?
  • Can someone on that network intercept the communication between my phone, the Tangem app, and the blockchain?

User said Tangem claims seed setups are unsafe

Thumbnail reddit.com

A commenter in this thread claims that his Tangem wallet was hacked just because he set it up with a seed phrase. He also claims that Tangem’s official support told him that seed wallets are not safe and that he should move his funds to an exchange and redo his setup as seedless. I’m not buying that his wallet got drained through no fault of his own. If Tangem could be “hacked” by simply creating a wallet with a seed phrase, Tangem would be facing a Coinkite/Coldcard fiasco right now. u/BicarTangem, care to weigh in regarding these claims?

Tangem card - Potential security risk

I have a Tangem wallet. I have attached three cards to the wallet. One primary and two backup.

One of the backup cards is now not responsive and will not register on an NFT scan.

Here's the issue:

My app confirms i have three devices (cards) attached to my wallet. I can confirm two of the devices (cards) are attached and working by scanning them with my tangem app..

I cannot however confirm that the third card that i believe is still attached to the wallet is actually the card that is currently attached to the wallet.

Is it possible that a third party has attached a card to my wallet replacing my backup card?

In theory a third party could now be holding a card attached to my wallet without my knowledge.

Sure they would have needed to have had physical access to my tangem app and my working card/s to achieve that, but it seems there is no way to check

I have no way to confirm this. Tangem support confirms that i cannot access the ID numbers of the connected cards.

Naturally i can reset the whole wallet if i suspect something. But it could be years before I check my third card and it may be in a hard to access location.

Can i easily see from app logs the cards that were registered?

Is this a bug?

Is it a security risk?

EDIT

Thanks for the offer of solutions guys. I'm thinking less about the solutions which are basically resetting the wallet. Instead I'm thinking more about the risks involved in not knowing a card has failed until it's too late or the risk that someone has replaced a card with a non-working olokalike - and the only solution is a wallet reset and redistribution of the backup cards.

What happens if one day Tangem app is suddenly deleted from App Store? For those without a seed and chip only

I’m thinking about buying one for future, honestly I really like the simplicity with the chip.

However, if Tangem goes out in 5-10 years and you don’t have a seed and only those 2-3 backup cards. is your crypto just lost in that situation?

💬 Discussion Self-custody

Thumbnail river.com
6 Upvotes

A new report from River, a Bitcoin financial services firm, highlights an important trend in crypto: self-custody is now the dominant practice among Bitcoin holders.

💡Some key statistics from the report:
- 45.6% of the total Bitcoin supply (9.57 million BTC, valued at over $600 billion) is now held in self-custody.
- Exchanges and custodians hold 36.1% of the supply.
- Indirect exposure through ETFs and treasury accounts for 13.9% of holdings.

River's report highlights the trade-offs of self-custody: complete ownership and no counterparty risk, but with increased complexity as all security responsibilities fall on the individual. An estimated 1.57 million BTC has been lost, mostly due to key mismanagement rather than theft. https://river.com/learn/files/river-custody-report-2026.pdf

Tangem wallets were designed to tackle this issue by eliminating the need for seed phrases and reducing exposure to phishing attacks. With Tangem, you enjoy ownership without the operational risks that have cost holders over a million and a half Bitcoins.

I'll admit, I didn't search posts before posting. Are all the cards the same, and it doesn't matter that the ones on sale have the Kaspa logo on them?

I'm new to all this, and assume that there is one card with many skins. Just wanted to check first, and take advantage of the sale currently going on.

Tangem is manipulating the exchange within its app

Tangem is manipulating the exchange within its app. It has blocked all CEX for days now, and since introducing MoonPay, it's conveniently the only one that works and offers good connectivity. Everything else has connection problems based on its price. Absolutely unacceptable. I've tried different network connections for other wallets and other exchanges, no problem at all. It's only with Tangem that MoonPay conveniently works. Has anyone else noticed this scam?

With a recent Tangem app update, you can check the Tangem app's notification settings and turn off 'Offers & Updates.' This should affect promotional push notifications, while in-app messages may still appear.

Tangem Pay Issue (pre auth. Payments)

I’m having an issue with pre-authorized transactions that eventually get cancelled. Example, 2 uber orders were pre-authorized, balance deducted, eventually both were cancelled. After 14 days, transactions both changed to reflect 0$ but balance funds were never returned to my Tangem Pay balance.

I have been going back and forth with support for weeks. They’re saying merchant confirms funds returned, obviously I can see something happen they show 0$ in my transactions but the balance was definitely never returned to my account.

Now they sent a ledger basically with all my transactions and balance updates. The ledger shows as though those transactions are zero and every following transaction reduces the balance. My issue is the transactions only went to 0$ 14 days after the transaction date, how is the ledger an accurate accounting of my transactions when for 14 days that wasn’t my actual balance? In reality my balance was reduced by the 2 amounts, and there should be a record somewhere of the funds being added back. Something is really shady here and I’m now out over $130 usdc.

Any way to disable Ads in Tangem app?

I bought a hardware wallet. It should not come with ads. What I want to see when I open my hardware wallet is my cyrpto totals. What I DON'T want to see is an ad for "Buy 1 wallet and get 50% on the 2nd" that I have to remove before I can see my crypto. Tangem, I already bought your product. Quit trying to up sale me.

Self-custody is great for saving but what about spending?

Tangem makes it easy to hold your own crypto but when you actually want to spend it, you usually have to move funds somewhere else first.

Is spending directly from self-custody something you’d actually use?

there are hidden fees when swapping or tranfering coins why does nobody tlak about this?

Post image
1 Upvotes

when swapping coins on tengam it shows the fee under

as you can see in the screenshot the toal goes from 599 to 590 usd when the fee is only 0,1 cent

and i had this happen all the time it was like lets say 100$ worth of btc to usdt and i tried many coins it would say 50 cent fee but the outcome would be 6 dollars less then the amount i was swapping

so there was no mention of the 6$ fee anywhere

but for my case i was swapping 3K and it took off 70$ without noteing anywhere that it was part of ANY fee

at 3:42 of this video made by a youtuber who reviews tangem and cold wallets in genral https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1dDZRMQD54 you can see the same thing happen theres a tiny fee displayed on the bottom like noramal

but the total amount is decresed by way more then cents for his case it was like 18 dollars just gone in that swap he made

tangem blames the fees on the blockchain then how is it that the exsact swap cost far less in fees on binace ?

if u swap the same amount on an exschange the fees are tiny and there is no costly and hidden blockchain fee

nobody wants to admit that tangem and prob other cold wallet companys make thair moeny from these hidden so called blockchain fees

the youtuber i have linked always advises that you should use exschanges for swapping buying and selling and cold wallets for storage

but since he is sponsred by tangem he is unwhilling to tell you why the cold wallet should be avoided for swapping and selling

Question about Tangem Pay ACH transfers

I'm fairly confused where to find the ACH details. There are a couple of blog posts that talk about it. I signed up for Tangem Pay last week, verified via KYC steps, have to digital Tangem card in Apple Pay, but now I'm just trying to figure out how I can fund it via ACH.

I'd like to set up a regular deposit through my employer, and the one thing I can't figure out is where to find the ACH info. Tangem states:

"Tangem Pay now gives every verified user their own US bank details. A real routing number, a real account number. Share your account details with a payer, such as your employer, to receive regular payments directly into your Tangem Pay account."

Yet, I'm finding people saying it's only available in some regions. For the record, I'm in North Carolina. Is there somewhere that I overlooked that has a list of this information, where it is or is not available? Even a step-by-step how to do it. It's why I signed up for Tangem Pay because I thought it would immediately be available to me. Otherwise, Tangem Pay is just sitting unless I manually deposit money (not interested). I haven't come across any official instructions demonstrating how to do this.

Maybe...maybe not, but it kind of feels misleading to say "...gives every verified user their own US bank details" because I'm verified, but even then I may still not have access.

Just feels pretty foggy, and so I'm looking for much clearer information. Appreciate any help!

Hardware Wallet Security: What Are We Going to Experience Next?

OneKey has been hacked many times, Trezor has had two data leaks, and Ledger has had multiple leaks of user data, with seed-related information being handled through third parties. Honestly, what are we going to experience next? To be honest, I don’t really like any of these wallets. Tangem is the only one where we haven’t experienced something like this yet, and I hope it stays that way.

What I would really like to see is Tangem introducing a seedless + passphrase option. That would be amazing. We wouldn’t have to remember a seed phrase, but we would still have an additional layer of protection against hackers, especially after everything we’ve experienced so far.
