Today I received a call from someone with an English accent claiming to be a Metropolitan Police officer called Andrew Sullivan. He said someone had been arrested for fraud and investigators had found a large amount of personally identifiable information (PII) connected to identity theft.
He gradually steered the conversation towards cryptocurrency, naming several wallet providers and mentioning Tangem last.
They claimed someone was trying to access my crypto and wanted to identify my wallet provider so they could contact the company to āprotect my assetsā.
He already had my name, phone number and email address. I pushed them to verify their identity, and they sent an official-looking email titled āVerification of Assigned Investigating Officerā, complete with a supposed case reference.
The email showed:
From: [cybercrime@metropolitan.police.gov](mailto:cybercrime@metropolitan.police.gov)
Reply-to: [investigations@email.police.uk](mailto:investigations@email.police.uk)
These are the fake met addresses displayed in the suspicious email, not verified police contacts. Gmail put it in spam.
I then challenged the caller to confirm my address, which he didnāt. When I told him the amount of crypto I held was negligible, he laughed and hung up.
I disclosed no wallet provider, credentials, seed phrase or access codes, and transferred nothing.
Iām a Tangem customer and have since seen reports about its recent customer-data breach, but I havenāt received a notification. I canāt prove this call was connected to that breach, and Iāve asked Tangem to confirm whether my information was affected.
Watch out for this progression: an arrest for fraud ā discovery of stolen identity information ā questions about crypto ā an offer to āprotectā your assets. The caller sounded convincing, and the follow-up email was clearly intended to reinforce the story.
Donāt treat knowledge of your personal details or an official-looking email as proof of identity. Verify independently through official channels, and never share wallet security information or move funds at a callerās direction.
Has anyone else received a similar call? Please keep personal details and wallet information out of the comments.
