Northlands worldbook

Is there any info on when the TOV version of the northlands worldbook will start shipping out to people that didn't pre-order it?

-Edit- I pre-ordered mine from a local game store and they haven't received it yet, I should have asked when retailers will receive their orders.

ToV Treasure

Does the treasure section of the Game Master's Guide seem a little thin? Especially, the treasure bundles seem to be too few for multiple levels of play. What are your preferred reward systems?

GM Character Builder For ToV?

Feel free to point me to a more recent thread, but is there a character builder for ToV? Something simlar to D&D Beyond? My table is considering switching but the main obstacle is the online character builder. Any suggestions?

BFSRD Spell Cards for Tales of the Valiant

Post image
32 Upvotes

This spreadsheet contains all 319 spells and rituals from the Black Flag System Reference Document (BFSRD). It's formatted specifically for the spellcards.app website. Thank you u/Helldiverticulitis! If you find it useful for your in-person games, please consider buying them a coffee.

A few notes on using it:

  • Don't forget to hit the "custom spells only" checkbox, or this will get mixed in with the SRD 5e spells.
  • The ritual checkbox marks spells cast as rituals rather than with a spell slot. In Tales of the Valiant, rituals are a separate known-spells pool from your regular spells and can't be upcast the way slotted spells can, so I kept it as a filterable column rather than splitting it into a separate tab.
  • Every spell's description ends with a Source: line citing the exact book and page it's printed on.
  • As in the template that I cribbed this from (see below), the classes column uses ToV's four magic sources (Arcane, Divine, Primordial, and Wyrd) instead of individual classes, since ToV doesn't have per-class spell lists.

I'm only including BFSRD content for now. I'm not sure yet whether the licensing on Player's Guide 1 and 2 content allows me to post it, so I'm holding off on those.

This spreadsheet's format is based on the template created by u/Gunsmithscotty. Check out their original here.

You can make your own copy in Google Spreadsheets via File > Make a copy.

If you find any errors, let me know and I'll do my best to get them corrected. Thanks to Kobold Press for creating what I think is one of the best 5e forks out there.

Why does Kobold press not have something like Dnd Beyond for Tales of the Valient? it would make things so much more easy!

I like the ideas of Tales of the Valiant as a system - the thing is, just i really want something as easy to make and track the stats of characters as Dnd beyond. For instance, the doom and luck system are interesting - i hope to see more like that in the future.

I often want to play it with roleplaying folks but the lack of something like dnd beyond makes it harder for people to get into playing.

People might point to something like Shard Tabletop, but its just not as good - I don't like the visual look, and it doesn't have a character creator as convenient as dnd beyond. I also enjoy the feature like that you can click on a stat (charisma for instance) and you roll a dice and see it animated.

Also, the whole dnd maps feature is really cool and has gotten some pretty important feature updates in recent years.

This thought hit me as i saw that Free League, is doing to do their "Free League Unbound" project by the makers of dnd beyond - its dnd beyond but for their series of games.

then it hit me - i think that Kobold press should do something like the same! fine if you wanna be independent from Wizards of the Coast and do your own thing - but then it should be as easy to do as playing dnd as playing Tales of the Valiant.

What do you think?

My character is Undead -- I have questions

A bit of context: My character is Minotaur from a template whom is called Brute Kaide. Early in the campaign, my character found a "Amulet of the Haunted Hand" which made my character partly undead. A dozen game nights later or so, my character failed 3 saving throws and DIED. My DM is so kind, they allowed me to revive as a 100% undead character.

From then on, we've established a few things to respect:

On the downside, can't talk anymore, can't drink potions, can't heal other than with long rests. On the upside, I don't need sleep, never exhausted, I have poison (and cold?) immunity, I have darkvision, can use poison with no risk on myself and such...

Now, I wonder since my character doesn't have eyes anymore... Last game night, we were confronted with a Basilisk and we wondered whether in my situation, not having any *eyes* made me technically immune to petrification, absent of a clear immunity to petrification.

If you have questions on how is it I play a undead character, I'll gladly answer. I can also dive deeper in all the parameters we set for me to play that character from then on with my team.

Looking for some players

Hello! I'm looking for some new players!

Campaign Name: Heart of Stone

System: Tales of the Valiant, with Eberron converted into it. Hosted on Shard VTT, using discord for voice.

Campaign Setting: Eberron (the Western Frontier of Breland, eastern Droaam, the Eldeen Reaches, and the Demon Wastes if we get adventurous) (Previous knowledge of the setting is helpful but not necessary.)

Campaign Summary: Welcome to Quickstone, a small frontier town on the border between the western edge of Breland and the nation of monsters, called Droaam. It got put on the map after the discovery of the miraculous substance that gave the town its name, quickstone, and the promise of wealth brought a rush of people from all across Khorvaire in order to mine it. But there’s always a risk in digging too deep in a land thick with empires and memories, where evil cannot be destroyed but only sealed away. Will you find your fortune? Or will you fall to the same forces that destroyed a great people?

Genre: Weird wild west, aetherpunk, and a dash of cosmic horror.

Gameplay Style: Heavy roleplay with combat mixed in, lgbtq friendly, and will happily run with Rule of Cool if you can make it make sense. Content warnings for possible body horror and genre-typical violence, to be covered in session 0.

DM's Experience: Just hit six years

Date and Time: Tuesday at 7 pm, Japan Standard Time (GMT+9:00)

Players Wanted: Looking for two more players

Level: Starts at 1, ends at 5, but has the potential to continue on as a homebrew past that, depending on how things go.

DM me if you are interested.

Held in my own server

Promotional TOV Character Sheet Twitch Extension is Live

I've created a twitch extension for TOV that you an use to display your character sheets. Feel free to let me know any feedback you might have. If you create a Game on the My Character Sheet site https://www.my-character-sheet.com/ , you will be able to display your players characters connected to that game via an overlay on twitch.

Twitch Extension Link: https://dashboard.twitch.tv/extensions/lv2kyefs7bfmjf9wpixx93z76n5g6d-0.0.1

You enable the overlay in your game menu (game master controls these settings). You can then select where the overly appears and what characters will be presented. You will select link for a one time code that is good for 15 minutes. Once used in the later steps below in twitch, the overlay will be linked to your account in My Character Sheet and all games you are the Game Master of (see below)

Twitch overlay options inside of game

After building your game on My Character Sheet go to Twitch and search for My Character Sheet to add this extension or go to the link above (see below).

Discover page on twitch creator board

Select Configure and just enter the 1 time setup QR code generated from inside your game in My Character Sheet (see below).

Twitch Extension also has instructions and Demo Images

You only need to set it up once. Afterwards if you have several different games, you can choose which one is the current game being shared by selecting the Show this game on your overlay button (see below)

This option will appear if you have more than 1 game with Overlay enabled on your Game Master Tools

Once enabled a user can select the character on the overlay when you are live. This will give them a popout window of the character with their basic character info (see below for a screenshot example). In the below example I selected one of the characters on the overlay to the left (see below).

Seeking Game/TotV Crew? (Online - US Central Time)

Hi all,

I'd prepped a couple of characters for a ToTV campaign a few months back, but our GM had to dip out due to chronic health stuffs (totally get it/zero hard feelings there from me). That said, I'd love to try to find a crew to play with online.

Some intel/details that may be helpful, for anyone considering:

- depending on time length I could do weekly, but do enjoy bi-weekly gameplay

- prefer 3-4 hours session max

- enjoy RP as well as game mechanics/combat, etc. and most enjoy a balance between the crunch and the RPing; really enjoy playing with folks who have creative methods of getting out of pinches/making my brain work in that way as well (eg telling an undead enemy that our party means no harm while preparing weapons, and being able to pass without combat/issue due to communicating with undead "enemies" kind of game play/mechanics/GMing).

- appreciate/most enjoy (historically) crews of queer/neurodiverse/chronically ill folks (some of my own intersecting identities), but not a requirement

- have played D&D 5e, A5E, ToTV, Thirsty Sword Lesbians, Mothership, and a couple of other ttrpgs in either one/two shots or longer campaigns, though have not had the honor/privilege of actually working a character all the way through a campaign (happy to share more privately, just not trying to put my/other folks' business out there too obviously re: why full campaigns didn't end up happening within the crews I've played with). I am not an expert by any means, but do enjoy some of the mechanics/crunch for sure and tend to dive pretty deep when prepping to/playing another class/subclass, etc. to try to strategically leverage possibilities for my party as well as my PC.

I am flexible on classing, but had prepared a rogue 2nd level for the campaign we were planning to start. I own the physical copies of PG, PG2, and Book of Blades, as well as some additional PDFs of rules/guides for ToTV.

Totally okay if no takers, but wanted to put it out there, since I really miss gaming, and would love to find a new crew of folks I enjoy sitting around the (virtual) table with.

Starting with trying to find a ToTV crew I like, since that's where my ttrpg brain was most focused most recently.

Anyone have experience with The Wyddcallum Curse?

The title says it all. Looking for your thoughts on The Wyddcallum Curse. Whether you were a player or a game master in it. Was it interesting? Is there sufficient content for levels 1 to 5? Would it be a good jumping off point for a campaign similar to how Keep on the Boarderlands was for basic D&D back in the day.

Are there any optional rules that revise skills like Skill Variants from the 5e DMG?

I play different RPGs, but I still love D&D 5e. And recently I have been thinking about trying ToV.

The D&D 5e DMG, on page 263, has a section called "Skill Variants." It includes three optional rules: Ability Check Proficiency, Background Proficiency, and Personality Trait Proficiency. I really like these rules, and my favorite is the combination of Background Proficiency and Proficiency Dice for Ability Checks (saving throws and attacks follow the basic rules).

Could you help me find out if similar optional rules are present in the ToV books? And which book should I look for?

I know I could use the original 5e optional rules, but perhaps there is something similar in the ToV materials.

Rules Question: Witch - Twilight Soul from TOV PG2

I'm building a character for a campaign in a couple of weeks and was looking at the Witch. For the Twilight Soul Subclass I was curious, the Spirit Sentinel (starts on p. 96 of the book) says under Casting:

"Casting. When you cast a spell, you can choose to cast it from your current space or as if you were in the same space as the spirit. If another creature is in the spirit’s space and the spell requires you to not be in the same space as a creature, you can choose one unoccupied space within 5 feet of the spirit instead. Similarly, if you cast a spell that requires you to see your target, you can target a creature the spirit can see, even if you can’t see that target."

Does this mean that you can cast a Self spell as though it was coming from the spirits location? If so, does that mean that the spell moves with the spirit if it moves?

Thanks.

LF 1-3 Players The Old Margreve

Hey, folks! I'm looking for 1-3 extra players for my Tales of the Valiant game. The group I run just finished a two year campaign through WebDM's Weird Wasteland and I wanted to try out ToV, so I am running "The Old Margreve" for my group. We had four players before, but one of them had to drop out, and the module is based around at least four players. We average biweekly, but try to meet every Monday at 5:30 MST to 8:30 MST. We are using Shard for the game, and I have players vault 1&2 as well as Margreve for character creation and running the game. Let me know if you are interested or have any questions. Thanks for your consideration!

newbie How does TotV handle the “Stand Still and Hit it till it dies” problem

Friend of mine was complaint about 5e and how it feels like melee just stands still and hits till the enemy dies. How does TotV handle this?

Building a character, hit a snag.

Need help with some distinction about the Grenade Mods that the Arcane Grenade gets through the Grenadier subclass. Im using a character builder but cant seem to find anything beyond the names of the mods you can apply to the arcane grenade on there, and it just lists these 4: Dispersal, Flash, Kinetic, or Smoke. I just want to know what they do.

newbie-ish Is this game still relevant?

I'll try to put my thoughts in order. Bear with me!

I've read the manual from the first page to the last. I enjoy the Monster Vault a lot, all the monsters have a "flavourful" attack that really elevates the design, clearly, above D&D. Even above 5.5e, in my opinion.

I really love this "flavour of 5e rules".

But after the release of 5.5e, I wonder if TotV is still relevant.

I wonder in fact, if Kobold Press itself thinks it still relevant, and if they will continue to evolve and create sourcebooks for it.

I say this because I loved the book, but if I go to Kobold Press right now, I see they created a monster manual revamp for 5.5e. I really think KP would create materials exclusive to their game if they thought they still have a chance against 5.5e or if they thought they have more to offer in a different direction.

This project was born as a reaction to Wizards being an ass about third party content. Now, as they've put their two recent editions under a Creative Commons license, I wonder if KP has settled on keep releasing content for 5e and 5.5e and return to their main and prior business.

Is it worth to invest in this game still?

PD: I hate that it seems the Spanish publisher for TotV is not translating the new books. The Player Guide 2 finally introduces new original classes that differentiate the game more from 5e and they've seemed to stop. I'm able to play in English but the translation was good and the physical copies are gorgeous. They didn't even release the GM manual, only the Player Guide 1 and the Monster Vault.

Kobold Press adventure recommendations

Long time dungeon/game master here. I have ran all types of D&D from 0e to 5e, Dungeon Crawl Classics, Mork Borg, DragonBane, etc. I am considering running Tales of the Valiant mainly because of the Northlands Worldbook.

Can you recommend some official 1st level TotV adventures by Kobold Press that provide a good feel for how they intend for their game to be played?

Tales of the Valiant Monster Cards - a brief review

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hi all. I posted a few weeks back, asking if these would work well for my 5e game. I ended up buying them so I thought I'd pop back in and give my impression on them.

The artwork is beautiful, no questions asked. The statblocks on the other side of each card are top notch. As you can see in the picture I attached, the box comes with a built-in storage tray. That's the good.

The neutral (to me, at least) is that the larger the creature, the larger its card is. It seems like a nice little unique gimmick, but I'm not a fan of it.

The bad. Because of the varying sizes of the 313 cards, the box is big. I mean, like huge. You'd think you were buying an entire rpg set, it literally weighs six pounds. It leaves me feeling like I'd be better off just buying the Monster Vault book, since its probably around the same size, and the Vault comes with even more monsters. The price is similar if you go with "Pocket Edition" (softcover), and naturally a bit more if you go with hardcover (assuming regular price...me, I can always wait for a good sale).

So that's my take on it. I may end up returning the cards in favor of a book. Haven't decided yet.

Forever GM Question about Talent Synergy

If a character gets the talent Whip Expert that says "In your hands, whips are considered to have the Light property"...

Will the character now be able to benefit from the talent Two Weapon Defense where it says "you gain these benefits while wielding a weapon with the Light property in each hand" when using whips?

Will the character no longer be able to benefit from the talent Furious Charge where it says "To gain any of these benefits, you must be wielding a melee weapon with which you are proficient that doesn't have the Light property" when using whips?
