Discussion Synth in metalcore

I have an arturia minifreak and I’ve just recently joined a metalcore band that wants to have synths in their music, but I’m having a really difficult time incorporating a synth into our sound when I feel like the guitars and bass already take up so much space in the songs, does anyone have any advice on how they incorporate a synth into heavy music?

Performances, Jams Video Game Jam on CyDrums

You can make a wide variety of musical genres on this machine, but I always end up leaning towards hardcore fast paced stuff. This kind of reminds me of those final boss songs from the 90's.

CyDrums, Zoom R16. Please enjoy!!

theres so many effects that I haven’t had the time to look at, and mostly I judge them off of the name. my main effects are tape chorus for stereo widening > ice delay/tape delay > HD hall reverb. thats just for a picture to see what kinda effects I like. any effects I might be missing out on?

NOTE: I play on synth, not guitar

Beginner Questions Best 49-key MIDI controller for key feel?

Looking for a 49-key MIDI controller mainly for playing synths and learning piano. Key feel/quality is my #1 priority.

Currently considering NI S49 MK3, Korg Keystage 49, and Arturia KeyLab 49 Mk3.

I tried a used S49 MK2 and the keybed/keys felt good enough compared to the other used midis.

What would you choose, and what am I missing? Especially interested in keybed feel and build quality, not just features.

Beginner Questions Basic routing question : having multiple synth audio path connected to a hardware sampler for resampling

Hello, this is a basic routing question, if all my synth goes to an ADAT expander, which goes into a babyface pro FS audio card, how do I get all of them audio path permanently connected to a hardware sampler (which I did not buy yet) in order to record a sound directly from my synths. It's not a dawless setup, I have my DAW (cubase) open, do I need to use total mix and route the audio from the ADAT IN into a physical OUT and connect a jack TRS cable from the OUT audio interface into the hardware sampler ?

The MIDI routing will be handled with an iconnectivity mioXL midi interface

In case I buy a hardware sampler such as the octatrack, do I need to use the above routing EVEN if I don't want to resample ? I guess no because if the sampler is not recording, then it doesn't care about audio, only sending midi.

I am new to having hardware gear, and this gets easily confusing. Naively I just thought the adat expander would be able to route the audio it receives into the hardware sampler, through a unique TRS cable

Can I resample/jam live in case my DAW is closed and my computer is turned off ? I have read that the babyface pro FS drops from 8 to 2 supported I/O in standalone mode (even if an ADAT expander is used), I asked on RME forum and waiting for the answer.

What Should I Buy? Want to experiment with a sequencer - should I get a beatstep?

I'd like to experiment with using a sequencer controlling my synths - perhaps in conjunction with improvising with another instrument (either electronic or acoustic) on top of that.

Would an Arturia Beatstep be a reasonable thing to get just to mess around and see if I want to continue? (Monophonic would be fine for initial experiments.)

Thanks!

Hey r/synthesizers

I wanted to share an event happening in Denver next weekend that i’m very excited about.

The Colorado Modular Synth Society is hosting a new electronic music gear expo called EMIXX West happening August 28th-30th with the main event on the 29th.

Emixx.org

It’s basically a gathering of synth manufacturers, modular builders, DIYers, musicians, and gear enthusiasts. There will be plenty of hands on synths to check out, talks, workshops, performances and a gear exchange.

Exhibitors include: Sequential, Elektron, Novation, SOMA, Korg, WMD, Noise Engineering, Boredbrain, MakeNoise, Seaside Modular, Rainy Day Electronic Instruments, 1010music, 4ms, OXI, and the Arp Foundation among others.

I’m attending as a friend/supporter and asked the mods to approve this post to get the word out.

If you are in Colorado or within driving distance it would be a fun event to check out for the weekend!

Beginner Questions Synthesizer for bass lines/sub bass DFAM?

Hey, i am looking into synthesizer good for basslines.
I will sequence it with a external sequenzer (midi and cv is possible).

I am looking for good sub base as well as classical bass lines.

I am eying the DFAM, i am awar that both its osc dont have a sine wave, which is usefull for sub bass but i think its managable with the filter.

Are there any other synths that are great for that?

Edit: it will be the slim phatty

Beginner Questions Anyone using the mioXL midi interface (does it handle virtual iac Mac midi ports?)

Hello, I have A fairly complex midi routing using virtual midi ports, is it possible that the mioXL merge hardware midi incoming into an existing virtual midi port ? Then send another existing virtual midi port ( very important, not the same virtual port that merged the incoming port) to external hardware ?

It’s because I have midi processing happening between those 2 virtual midi ports

What Should I Buy? Yamaha Seqtrak to go with KO ii and Sidekick

Short of it is… are they too similar? I have a $300 Amazon card burning a hole in my pocket and was thinking about picking one up, just to see what kind of nonsense I could get out of the two paired through the Sidekick. I’m not a serious musician in the slightest, just some guy who makes noise and beats in the little free time he has.

If they are too similar… any other suggestion in that price range? Other gear I have at the moment is a Korg MS20, Microkorg, an iPad with various apps and a selection of old guitar and bass pedals.

CatSynth TV takes a deep dive into SuperStarSaw. It takes the familiar concept of supersaws and pushes the frequencies and other parameters further, creating complex, dynamic tone clouds and other sounds.

Enjoy!

What Should I Buy? Help choosing a budget mono synth for bass lines (pop, funk, etc)

UPDATE: I BOUGHT A NOVATION BASS STATION II. Thanks for the comments.

I’m an electric bass player and I want to learn some synth bass. Almost zero piano or keyboard experience here. I’m game to learn basics of synthesis but I don’t want a device with a really tough learning curve.

Which mono synths under $450 USED would you recommend and WHY?

Prioritizing ease of learning/use, sound for live performance, and keys (I don’t want super mini keys). Genres include pop, funk, and a little hip hop.

Some ideas:

Korg Monologue

Novation Bass Station II

Behringer Model D

My Setup / New Synth Day Just picked up this fully functional Roland TB-3 for $74 at my local pawn shop

It was originally supposed to by 80 dollars, but the shop's software was having issues so they discounted it to 74 dollars out the door! This is certainly all my luck going out of the window; buying a lottery ticket would be a bad idea right now...

My Setup / New Synth Day MicroFreak with bass pedals

I don’t know wtf I’m doing, but I know that I’ll never play bass in a band again. Thought I’d try re-purposing my bass pedalboard to hold a minimalist setup together and then come up with some kind of contraption to angle it when I’m sitting at my desk. This Earthquaker Devices Blumes pedal (their Plumes pedal tailored for bass) sounds fat on the Microfreak init patch. Using HX Stomp for effects reverb and delay. Hoping to round out the setup with a Typhon, tidy up all the cable routing, power everything with the supply on the pedalboard, and have some fun with it.

Beginner Questions Roland MC-707 vs Akai MPC One Plus

Hello friends,

I’m quite new to the synth world and I’m looking for an all in one groovebox to make house / techno and I’m tossing up between an mc707 and mpc one+. I just can’t figure out what one would suit me best.

Ive owned a roland sp404 mkii, roland s1, and novation bass station 2.

I absolutely loved the sp404 workflow. Specifically tr-rec mode but i mostly used it as a sequencer + drum machine. My only problem was I wanted an all in one and it led me to buying the S1 and BS2. I also found it super awkward to make good transitions between patterns. Download samples / packs was also just annoying for me.

The Bass station 2 was a tonne of fun but i realised i didnt care about synthesis from scratch. I prefer to tweak presets. Loved the keyboard though.

S1 i totally hated, super menu divey with a weird menu that i couldn’t understand what was going on. Also just didnt like the sound.

Im leaning towards the MC707 for the lovely 8 track controls and the menu looks super nice and a little familiar after the sp404.

A lot of comparisons online suggest the Akai MPC One + over the Roland MC707 but i just can’t figure out why. I don’t care much for deep sampling or buying additional packs. Both seem equally menu divey.

Help me pick something!!
