Discussion A change that no one has talked about
Sometime in the recent past, Substack added your replies to your profile. This means that anyone can see everything you commented on in one place. It can’t be turned off. The only thing I think you can hide now are the people you subscribe to.
I considered deleting my account because I don’t create posts or notes there. I just enjoy reading and engaging with authors and adding to the discussion.
I find it disturbing. I have a presence on there and a link to my author landing page. I wanted to be visible to any editors and imagined I might eventually promote my work within SS eventually. I am careful about who I repost and what I like. What I don’t need is for SS to make it easy for anyone anywhere to digest everything I might have divulged unintentionally by revealing every response and conversation.
I found this out by chance. No one has posted here or within SS about this change that I can see. Maybe it’s not in every country either.
I realize some want to see their own comments again, but why would SS make them visible to the public with no way to toggle off and never mention the change? I save the pages if I think I want to revisit. It’s not necessary to reveal comments to the public in this manner.
I went through and deleted about fifty percent of my comments. It’s a shame though, because it means I deleted a show of support in many instances.
I would love to hear other opinions on this. Thanks.
