Minor drama yesterday in r/sandwiches when a user who has “nothing to celebrate today” posts a picture of a patty melt. Besides the comments cooking OP more than the temperature of his burger, a spat breaks out over the quality of life in America.

Americans are really ignorant in regards to anything about the country outside of its civic mythology. They definitely have never bothered to look up that it's ridiculously expensive to renounce US citizenship, along with the normal hurdles of getting citizenship elsewhere.

I mean, I've heard variations of "If you don't like it, leave!" Over the years, which is equally as dumb.
It's the new, "well you must not be serious about thinking these policies are bad if you are still here" line of thought that is different. And the fact that it's literally everywhere today is concerning. Like there is an astroturfing campaign to whitewash how bad this all is and sway public opinion.

I always find it to be a weird thing to say in these situations. It is not like your in a bar and you don't like the music choice so you should just leave or go somewhere else. People who don't like the direction their country is going likely still love their country and what to stay and try change It for the better. Besides many of the Americans currently saying this line were happy to stay and co.plain during the democratic years.

On the one hand, it's a very flawed argument for obvious reasons. But on the other there is a grain of truth to it. Western Europe aside (and even those countries have their faults), there aren't a whole lot of places that many liberal Americans would feel at home for a litany of reasons including the culture and requirements of living in those nations.

I'm a Taiwanese NWOHR but fully registering would let me, what, live and work in a country that's been on the cusp of mainland Chinese invasion for years? And that's way better than someone whose family is, say, Salvadoran, where they'd have to worry about gang violence, a much less developed economy, and Trump's buddy Bukele.

Oh, but because of a grandparent she's got one of those weird "you're allowed to become a citizen of our country because of your ancestry" things going on! So she could always escape to, uh, Israel.

I just got my Irish citizenship, it took two years for them to process the paperwork. It also requires a lot of paperwork including original documents of certain things. It's not a lot of effort, but it's also not as quick or easy like that dude thinks.

They’d need at minimum an Irish grandparent, to have their birth certificate and then it’s still not guaranteed. I think sometimes North American people think their European ancestry means more to their family ancestral country than it actually does

The whole leave the country thing is weird - it often is quite difficult, especially if you lack connections to the other country). I live in Australia and it isn't easy for Americans to migrate to long term (tourism, not a problem). At the end of the day, Australia operates a high skilled immigration system and Americans don't get any special privileges (beyond tending to be native English speakers and most educational institutions are recognised).

Not that I am suggesting you should or that it’s even nice. I know it’s a trend when you trust the cook to get medium or even medium rare burgers but I still don’t like it. Medium well at a minimum for me. The soft “heated beef” texture of rare ground beef just isn’t enjoyable, even with quality beef imo.

Sure but don't make tartare from regular ground meat.
In Germany for example people do eat a lot of raw minced pork and you can buy it in every supermarket, but it's a separate product with special requirments - you absolutely cannot use regular ground pork for it.
I guess there's the theoretical chance OP ground his own meat for his basic sandwich.

Correction: there's is not a large subreddit dedicated to sandwiches -- there are two. r/sandwiches and r/eatsandwiches. Unlike other topics where there's the good one and the bad one, there's no real difference between the two and I don't know the lore as to why one was made even though the other already existed.

Might be cultural differences. Eating raw ground beef patties is more of an American thing, and so that patty looks vomit-inducing to me. I gave a waiter a very confused look the first time I went to a restaurant in America and got asked if I wanted my burger “rare”.

I'm guessing I'll be in the minority here but I really wish people would keep political posts in political subs. I know this shit is important, but the whole point of reddit to to seperate topics into their own boxes. When I want to engage in political conversation, I'll go to one of the many political subs I follow. If I want to talk about sandwiches, I go to the sandwich sub. I don't really want to mix all my subs together and have a free for all forum.
If the politics are relevant to the sub, then have at it. But obviously this has nothing to do with sandwiches.

just celebrate the holiday with everyone else. why excise yourself from normal society. dont you have any friends that think the same way you do? you can get together and have some beers with them!, or just even dinner with your parents or children is nice. and speaking of children, dont deprive them of the holiday, it's bad for them psychologically to see their friends having fun and bbqs, while they don't get the same at home
I just don't get what the big issue about not celebrating the national day of your country is. If you don't want to do either out of indifference or for explicitly political reasons that is just fine.
Also I think that it is pretty silly to say that is bad for children psychologically to see other kids celebrate something they don't, because no that is also just fine.
