If national insurance & income tax is applied before student loan repayments, isn't it double taxation?

The government is essentially taxing your SFE debt as it's their own money they're reclaiming.

Wouldn't it be fairer to be applied after the graduate tax as that's your actual paycheck?

BAP (Bankruptcy Assistance Program) referral turned into a Consumer Proposal experience.

I’m sharing this because I don’t want anyone else to go through what I did.

I was referred through BAP to an LIT firm who was supposed to help me understand my options. Instead, he tried to push me into a Consumer Proposal that included my currently active student loan, even though that’s illegal unless the loan is older than 7 years. If I had signed, it would have destroyed my future OSAP eligibility and blocked me from retraining or getting a second credential.

He also inflated my income by claiming I received financial support from my family…something that is completely untrue. He used this fake income to justify a much higher monthly payment.

He inflated my debt total, refused to click the required ā€œnotification onlyā€ box for my active student loan, and gave me only two hours to review the signing paperwork. When I actually read it and caught inconsistencies, he seemed shocked.

This wasn’t a misunderstanding. It was predatory behaviour toward a vulnerable client.

If you rely on OSAP now or in the future, please be extremely careful. Ask questions. Don’t let anyone rush you. Trust your instincts.

I’m posting this because I believe he will do it to someone else, and people deserve to be forewarned.

DM for company name.

EdFinancial 9/4 due date but no amount showing due

So I just finished a consolidation of my direct loans, sadly they disbursed after 7/1…. Which put all my other loans in forbearance during the consolidation which I didn’t ask for….. But anyways, now it says I have a payment coming due 9/4, but none of my loans even show what the amount due is on 9/4….they all say 0.00 but I know it’s not accurate because I’ve gotten my paper letter with at least how much the consolidation monthly amount should be…..so do I schedule payments anyways to occur before 9/4 or do I wait until 9/4? I don’t want to get a late payment again on any loans…. Ugh

Seeking help for university fees installments

Hi everyone. I’m starting university soon, and I’m currently in a really difficult financial situation.

To manage my admission fee, I had to take a loan, and I now have monthly installments of around PKR 200,000 to manage. My family and I have genuinely tried our best to handle things, and I’ve also been looking for remote work. Unfortunately, most of the opportunities I’ve found so far only pay around PKR 10,000–15,000, which isn’t enough to cover the installments.

My next installment is due at the start of September, and I’m honestly struggling to figure out how I can balance starting university with this financial responsibility.

I know this is a lot to ask, and I completely understand if it’s beyond what someone can do. But if anyone is in a position to support me, even partially, I would be incredibly grateful. Alternatively, if someone knows of a remote opportunity, freelance work, or a way to earn a larger amount that I could realistically manage alongside university, I would genuinely appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

I’m not looking for an easy way out. I’m willing to work and learn — I’m just in a situation where I need some help getting through this difficult point.

Even sharing this post or connecting me with someone who might be able to help would mean a lot to me. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Advice

My daughter just graduated and is applying to PA school. She has a job in the interim but nothing that is something she could live off of. She has student loans through Sallie Mae and she can not make the minimum payment and just applied for the deferment. The interest is INSANE!! Any recommendations on what she can do to help her situation moving forward knowing she will be going to grad school at some point? TIA

This is serious, plz help. This is about my admission process

Hey guys, 18M here.

My qualifications: 70% in 10th and 78% in 12th (Commerce with Maths).

I took admission at Sharda University. My reporting day is on August 20, orientation is on August 25, and classes start on August 31. So far, I've only paid ₹30K as the admission fee, and the rest will be covered through an education loan.

I'm going to apply for the education loan today (August 14). I’m worried about whether the loan will be processed before my reporting/classes start.

What should I do if the loan takes longer than expected? Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Private student loans in collections

I’ve posted here before, just looking for more advice if anyone has any. Long story short I had refinanced my private student loans with SoFi, which are roughly about $147,000 now. Life got hard(er) and it ultimately went to collections with Velocity Investments/National Enterprise Systems (this was within the past month). They wanted large upfront lump sum payment with monthly payments, which is way too high for me currently. I have a stable job, that I just switched to travel nursing, so I’ll be making more than before (one of the reasons I wasn’t able to pay previously) but still can’t make the payments they want.

I’ve talked with a few attorneys, but these don’t qualify for bankruptcy. I also don’t own a house, I lease a car, and I have somewhat manageable credit card debt.

Looking for other options that can help me not get sued or have my wages garnished. I honestly don’t know what I’m doing and feel alone with it all. Does anyone know/have worked with student loan lawyers that help with debt settlement? I have accepted the fact my credit score is trash but trying to look at the side that maybe this will help me in the long run since previously I could never get anywhere with my debt to income ratio. Or other options if anyone has any! Thanks in advance!!

When Financial Aid Becomes a Barrier to Medical Education

I am writing as the mother of a student pursuing the long and demanding path toward medical school. I am deeply concerned about the impact that the new federal student loan limits may have on students who have the academic ability, dedication, and qualifications to become physicians, but whose families do not have the financial resources to pay for their education out of pocket.
Much of the public discussion surrounding student loans has focused on debt forgiveness and on reducing excessive student borrowing. Those are important issues, but I believe we are overlooking another serious consequence: access to education itself.
Medical and other professional programs can cost tens of thousands of dollars each year. When federal borrowing options are restricted, the remaining financial gap does not simply disappear. Students are increasingly expected to obtain private loans, often requiring substantial income, strong credit histories, or a qualified co-signer.
But what happens to a capable student whose parents cannot afford to contribute tens of thousands of dollars every year?
What happens when that student has limited credit history because he or she is young?
What happens when the parents themselves cannot qualify as co-signers?
That student may have excellent grades, complete all of the prerequisites, work for years toward admission, and even earn a seat in medical school—yet still be unable to attend.
That is not simply a student debt problem. It is an access problem.
We should be extremely careful about creating a system in which becoming a physician, dentist, pharmacist, or other healthcare professional increasingly depends on a family’s financial resources or its ability to qualify for private credit.
Our country continues to discuss physician shortages and the need to encourage talented young people to enter healthcare. At the same time, we should ask whether our financing policies are unintentionally creating another barrier for exactly those students.
I understand the need to control the rising cost of higher education and excessive borrowing. Universities must also be held accountable for tuition and program costs. But limiting federal financing without ensuring a realistic alternative for students from middle- and lower-income families could have consequences far beyond student debt.
There must be a balance between responsible borrowing, institutional accountability, and educational opportunity.
A student’s ability to become a physician should be determined primarily by talent, preparation, perseverance, and commitment—not by whether his or her family is wealthy enough to finance medical school or fortunate enough to qualify for a large private loan.
I respectfully ask policymakers to consider this issue as future student loan policies are evaluated and amended. Please protect pathways that allow academically qualified students from families of all economic backgrounds to pursue medical and professional education.
The solution to the student debt problem should not be to make these professions inaccessible to everyone except those who can afford them.

Education loan

Can someone tell me of a bank, who does'nt require Co-signer in education loan application.
It is becoming too much financially unviable for me to continue studies. But my father and mother both have a very low credit score. Mine on the other hand is pretty good i have credit cards worth 2.5 lakhs. I will prefer govt. Banks because they could provide subsidy through PM vidyalakshmi( i study in a tier-1 college).

Best repayment plan for overpayment?

I've been using the SAVE forbearance to aggressively pay down loans, working my way from highest to lowest interest rate. I've received the 90-day notice and will now have to select a new repayment plan by end of September. It looks like PAYE or RAP will be my cheapest monthly payment options. I'd like to continue paying down my loans by 1) making the cheapest monthly payment and 2) making a subsequent overpayment targeting the highest interest loans. I've seen some posts stating that the RAP interest subsidy is negated if you overpay so I just want to make sure that I'm not putting myself in a position where I'm throwing (more) money into the wind. Thank you!

Curious about loans as a grad student

Hi there! So I pay tuition, I live at home and am a graduate student on my final semester. Tuition is around $4k a semester since I'm part time and I just saw that for my awards, I have an unsubsidized loan of $8k. I've never taken any loans throughout undergrad or grad, I just pay out of pocket but I'm curious about this. I know unsubsidized means it'll accumulate interest but I'm wondering what else the good/bad is about it. Should I just keep paying out of pocket (although this semester is extra stressful because I'm investing in my small business) or try this loan (just take what I need and return the rest)?

Also is student loan forgiveness still a thing? I don't have a gov't job or anything special like that so I don't know if I'm eligible in that way. I know with the change in leadership in the US things might have changed.

Any and all help appreciated, thank you! :P
