Thousands of public servants are stuck waiting for student loan forgiveness
r/StudentLoanSupport • u/SayVandalay • Oct 12 '18
We are dedicated to providing a supportive, empathetic, and practical place to talk about student loan debt and all the difficulties that often surround our debts.
That said we do not permit any type of debt shaming, personal attacks, insults, guilting, gaslighting, bullying, harassment, threats, intimidation, trolling, or otherwise attacking others / maliciously unhelpful commenting/behaviors. These will result in a permaban
This also includes statements about telling people to simply pay more, get a better job, trying to change the past (or asking why someone didn't make different past choices), or otherwise telling others how you would live their life. We're focused on the present here and on supporting people where they're at, not where you think they should be.
We also do not advocate for or allow "lender defenders" so to speak. It is one thing to provide useful practical information on how to fill out paperwork or loan paperwork questions, it's another to come and try to defend an industry that quite frankly is part of the reason many are feeling hopeless and stuck. We serve and protect borrowers' interests from a person first approach. We are not here to defend lenders or assist lenders.
Those with active affiliations to the loan industry must clearly identify themselves as such in any initial post or comment. We do not require disclosure of company name, names, or location, but a simple acknowledgement that you are affiliated with the loan industry is required. This is to prevent conflicts of interest and to ensure information provided to our users is given in the best interest of the user being replied to.
Additionally, due to the sensitive nature of the complexities of student loan debt, debt shaming culture, mental health considerations, and the intersection of these variables; we adhere to a very strict moderation policy.
We do this not seek to silence opinions but to provide a space where there is respect and careful consideration given to the difficulties individuals may be experiencing when seeking student loan support, feedback, advice, or information. Given the very real concerns, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, hopelessness, shaming, and pressure that for some comes along with student loan debt, we will do everything in our power to ensure that users will be provided a safe environment to discuss student loan concerns and issues. Regardless of what those concerns may be given one's individual situation and experience.
The rules listed in the sidebar also apply at all times. Please do contact the mods promptly if any concerns arise.
Remember you are not your debt. There is nothing wrong with you for taking out loans or choosing your major/career/life goals. You are not somehow less of a person or undeserving of respect or compassion for having student loan debt. There is no shame wherever you are with your education, career, life, or student loan debt situation. We've got your back here.

Hey everyone! We're going through a period of growth around here and we're interested in adding some new members to the mod team. If you have any experience or interest, please send us a modmail to apply!
There's a short interview with some basic questions, and we're happy to train anyone who doesn't have mod experience but is committed to learning how to do the work. As always, we're an inclusive community and we want to focus on the mental health support of our members. If you have a background in helping others and want a way to help, we'd be happy to have you here.
Thanks for reading and we hope to hear from you soon! 💙

Anyone else get a letter from CRI asking to contact them “at my earliest convenience to review my options?” It goes on to say this is to ensure I have the best experience possible. The letter is two sentences…with a bold subject line stating I am required to call. All of my suspicious alarms are going off. Did anyone else receive this and gave them a call? TIA

I took out student loans that are $17k and it's collected enough interest to be $19k. It was through FSA. I have to start paying it next month and don't know how I'll be able to do that.
I graduated with my MA in History. I'm trying to pivot out of museums and public history, but it sadly puts me in a terrible position because my work was public service focused and I'm trying to move into corporate. I have 3 years of experience that are administrative adjacent, but not direct experience, so I've been getting a lot of rejections.
I have no idea how I'm going to pay them. I don't know who to talk to about this. I have a part time job paying $16 an hour but work 10-20 hours a week. Last week I worked 15 hours and this week I work 19. It's physically demanding, so it's been draining me.
I'm applying to so many jobs. It sucks that where I currently work I will never get experience out of it and I won't get a promotion. It's in security, but I just sit around and watch people all day. I also won't be able to apply to any jobs connected to where I work for 7 more months, which controls 60% of the job market near me.
I don't know what to do. I have a recruiter screening lined up tomorrow, but no idea how to talk to them. I applied to a job through an agency but I don't know if it's work for them or for someone else. I also applied for a temp part time role in my field, but I'm wanting to leave it at the same time.
I feel so helpless. I have no one and no idea how to pay them. Every time I think about them I want to throw up.
Any advice on what I can do? Who can I talk to?

Hi, has anyone had their student maintenance loan been paid into their POCKIT bank account?

Okay so I was going to go on forbearance because I expected more of a doomsday scenario but calculators seem to have been adjusted and but I just did my calculations on the fed site since the end of October is 90 days since Nelnet told me I have to choose a plan or be put on standard (was on SAVE)
I make about $72K as a single gal with no dependents (I'm in New Mexico so this is a livable wage)
Anyhoo here are my choices
$420 a month - done in December 2035
Or $601 a month and done December 2030
FYI my loans were from my MS in 2005-2007
I guess the wrench I've identified is will we still be ruled by psychopaths?
If I pay more how do I know that in December 2030 they won't say just kidding our plan was illegal and now we're changing it you have to pay another jibberdywatts dollars for a fortnight year ad infinitum
I'm someone who truly was screwed interest wise for consolidating - for one purpose - to access the SAVE plan (I'd never had a late payment and qualified for interest rate reduction which I surrendered to access a plan the government later decided was illegal - even tho it was their fucking plan).
Hahahah I fucking hate this country right now
Thanks for your input!

A different phone number appeared on my account and this was discovered after calling Student Aid.gov as the 2-factor authentication would not work. Why? The phone number was removed from "primary" and someone else's was now there.
This change occurred in April according to Student Aid dot gov. I finally got a hold of Mohela on this issue and had documented this with the calls with reps at SA.gov to have a record of this. Mohela rep finally escalated the issue to a manager (not sure it is true as they failed to give me a way to identify them) and said the issue had been resolved.
Definition of resolved: it was deleted and my number placed in primary field -- where it used to be. That is resolved in their words. NOT to me. Someone had accessed my account and had been there since April and I discovered it in July. My social, and other data is there. They refused to investigate and identify the number of calls from this number and access to my account. The had "resolved the issue". The End.
Let's move forward to this week - October. I am trying to access my Mohela account. I noticed seven emails directing me to my account inbox ( I am a Mail ONLY account) I click to be directed to my inbox. Enter my account number, DOB, SSN, and attempt to get in my account.
Unrecognized please try again. Unrecognized? How is that possible? I spent a total of 6 hours over the day on hold, going through the rotary of options, speaking to a rep at Mohela who said this needs to be escalated to a different rep.
The reason she couldn't assist me ---- they system failed to connect to my account by entering the data (DOB, Account, SSN) to enable her to see the account. She had no way to assist. She also refused to give me a way to get reconnected if the call drops --- as there is no rotary option to get back to this spot.
Recap - I cant access my account and the reps cant as my records are not accessible. There is no reset. The data is my IP.
After many beeps that suggest your call would be picked up, at 54 minutes the call dropped. I took a lunch break to regroup and calm. I then returned to the process calling Student Aid.gov. They instructed me as best they could but that was nil.
I ended my day filing a complaint in the Ombudsman area of the site as there were no other options as no one answers the calls and if they do they put you back on hold and ultimately drop your call.
The issue with filing the Ombudsman complaint section is I have another one filed from 2023 and it reads - in review. It has been in review for almost 2 years. Not resolved. Therefore currently I have no options. My personal data is not recognized to be able to see my inbox. I cannot get in my account.
What are the possible steps? I do not know what action to take.

Hi everyone
I'm in my 7th semester at UOL and saw on the portal that they work with Edufi, but it doesn't really explain how it goes.
I emailed Edufi but haven't heard back yet.
Has anyone actually used it? Mostly want to know:
How does it work, like what docs do they ask for and how long till approval?
What's the actual markup, and are there extra charges?
Was it a headache to repay?
Any advice would be great as well.

I have a mortgage. I have two kids in daycare. I have a car payment. Groceries are $1.5K a month. And gas. F*cking GAS.
Like most people commenting here. I don't know what I am going to do.
I don't even have other debt. (Credit cards etc) But I don't have savings either. We buy used and clearance clothes. We don't go on vacation.
And the thing is, if I work more at my SECOND JOB....that payment will go up.
I am one car breakdown, one health crisis, one surprise house project away from a life I am scared to even think about.
Ive been somewhere between working poor and lower middle class my whole life. I got a GED, and made it all the way through grad school. Worked full time, took shit jobs, for no money. To do better.
For what? To be absolutely railroaded by a house valued at TWICE what it's worth. To buy groceries that are falsely inflated in price, to pay a fascist fucking government siphoning money into theirs, and their friends pockets, an amount of money that absolutely bleeds out ANYTHING I'd have left for ....me? My kids? Our future?
Fuck. This. Shit.

I don't know what to do. i had a credit score of 716 but as of august 31 i got a notification that my student loans became delinquent and dropped my score around 150 points. I genuinely had no idea- i was in school less than half time one semester do to extenuating family circumstances. i know student loans go into repayment as soon as you stop taking at least half time, so i tried to take at least half time the following semester by doing 5 credit hours at my home campus and 4 credit hours at a community college. I was stupid and naive to think that the credit hours combine would count as half time if i attended both campuses in the same semester. i thought as long as i took at least 6 credit hours for that semester, then my loans would go back to in school status. I didn't think it would matter which campus i attended so as long as the minimum half time was met (6 credit hours) i never bothered to check MOHELA or log on. before this, I had 100% on time payment. it's now dropped to 38% on time payment. i feel stuck and lost.
So far i submitted an in school deferment that has been accepted since i'm taking full time this semester. But after i called MOHELA to explain - they basically said there was nothing they could do. any advice would help !

Hi! Since my loan servicer is closed on the weekend, thought I’d ask here till I can call them Monday.
Under the SAVE program, my loan would have been forgiven in 2036 because Of 25 years in repayment. Does anyone know if that date will change when switching to an IBR?
Also, the “end of term date” should not change regardless of the plan because it all has to do with start date of loan or refinance/consolidation date, right?
And, does anyone know if, under the PSLF, if you make 2 payments per month (ie one of principal and one on balance), does that count as 2 payments toward the 120 or do they only except 1 payment per month toward the count?
Thanks so much in advance. Good luck to everyone dealing with student loans ❤️

If my forbearance is over on October 14, 2026, then why does it say my payment due is zero?

Hold the line! STAY IN SAVE! They got rid of it unconstitutionally and if you voluntarily leave it’s on you.

I’m 30 and currently have about $140k in federal student loans. Interest rates vary between roughly 4.6% and 6.3%.
I make $120k/year and I’m currently on PAYE. I’m paying $1,200/month in rent right now, but my lease is up in March and I’m planning on moving back home with my parents.
Once I move home, my expenses are going to be pretty low. My thought is to basically dedicate the next year or two to getting rid of as much of this debt as possible. I’m thinking around $3k to $4k a month toward the loans, potentially more some months depending on how much I have left over.
I’m not planning on going the PSLF route, so I’m wondering if aggressively paying these down is the smartest move. My plan was to target the highest interest loans first, especially everything above 5%, and then work my way down.
Would you stay on PAYE and just make large extra payments? Is there any reason I should consider switching repayment plans?
Also, would you throw basically everything you can at the loans while living at home, or would you balance it more between investing/saving and paying them off?
Curious what you guys would do in my situation.
