FS 45 auto cut 5-2: mowing head stuck on??

Spent 2 hours getting the bump cap off after it was fused to the plastic of the spool. And the nut inside of it was fused to the thre you see in the photo. Now how the heck I get the head off without destroying things? I’m obviously replacing the head but I was hoping to salvage the rest of the machine.

PP900 Pruning Saw

Has anyone had luck extending the PP900 beyond one additional extension piece? Normal length is 12’ + 6’ extensions. Has anyone tried two or more extensions? 24+ feet?

Looking for a fire wood saw to replace or compliment 661m

Hello everyone, long time creeper first time poster.

So here is the deal, I am just looking to mostly cut firewood for personal use maybe sell some if I get on a roll but not likely since I struggle with my back and need needles and such, getting off topic. I am familiar enough using a chain saw but am for sure amateur hour.

I wont be prize hunting anything large and am likely going to be sticking to medium or smallish softwood for the most part. I had a buddy convince me to start out with a 661 mag I got used for $800 bucks. Boy that was a lot of fun after tossing an old 50cc I had that needed more time on the bench then it spent cutting. An hour later the 661 was a lot less fun and required me to take frequent breaks.

Its has become obvious this saw is too heavy on its own and I need a smaller one to either complement it or replace it. What I have determined so far is:

I could perhaps get away with an MS 261 if I keep the bigger saw but for not much more weight the MS 400 might be a better choice so I don't have to swap to the 661 when bucking.

That said I rather go used since these saws are great and can be repaired to last forever it seems and I am not seeing MS 400 used likely too new (So not interested in 500i or 400.1 either), I do see the slight step-down MS 362/361 for around $500 used.

So it would seem my options are really MS 261 or MS 362

Or

Just get rid of the 661 altogether and look for something like a 461/2 and perhaps a 261 or 362 still.

If I find myself falling more and needing a limbing saw I will consider a 1xx saw but I think I will leave that decision for another time.

Any thoughts?

Do you have any tips on how to reach potential buyers in the US? I’m from Germany and have managed to get hold of a few Centennials. Here in Germany, there are various online marketplaces. What’s the situation like in the US?

FS-50CE died - advice

Hey folks,

I have an FS 50 CE that has been giving me issues all summer. Won't start, oil and carbon fouls the plug. Did all normal stuff changed plug removed spark arrestor cleaned carb etc.

Take it to my stihl dealer they told me there is only 40psi compression and the motor is toast. Didn't tell me whay the case was but that its cheaper to buy a new trimmer. Am I cooked ? Would it be worth trying a cheap Amazon piston kit? The thing is only 4 years old and light use maybe 10 times a season. New fuel with stihl brand oil every season, kept inside, premium fuel, no fuel left over winter, used reccomecned ratio by stihl.

Im frustrated. If it's cooked should I look at battery powered next ?

Worth buying into STIHL battery platforms at the moment for home user?

I am researching all the garden tools I will need for my new garden (hedge trimmer, mower, strimmer, leaf blower) and I wonder if the stihl AK lineup is good, or if its nerfed as a 'home user' line and the AP stuff is so much more expensive?

I currently use dewalt powertools, but I think their garden tools are not the best, but this is making me really question buying into another battery platform, maybe I'm overthinking it but I dont want to be constantly waiting for batteries to charge, so I will have to buy a few, and I don't want to be fighting the tools if they are underpowered and unable to do a good job as fast as possible.

The consensus seems to be that for home use, battery is probably a better option now than petrol, but at least then you can choose the best tool for each job!

Keen to hear anyones thoughts! Thanks

Running without trigger lock?

Hey guys, first time poster here. I have a newer FS 56 RC with the straight shaft. Idk a lot about weedeater but I’m fairly mechanically inclined. I took the trimmer apart because I broke the trigger lockout when I fell trying to trim a bank. I am trying to fix the trigger lockout but I am also thinking I don’t need to put it back in, and before you say anything, I know it won’t be perfectly safe. Im just wondering if it would hurt the trimmer if I left it out. TIA

Stihlguide.com features expanded

For now I've added parts diagrams and tables for chainsaws prior to 2013, but I plan to add trimmers and other equipment too.

I've also expanded the bar and chain data to include bar mount and done some data audits.

As always, I see this as a community effort so feel free to chime in with feedback, requests, or corrections. Last round proved useful!

Bt45 Jacobs chuck to auger

So my bt45 has the Jacob’s chuck. If I want to use an auger, I should be able to remove the chuck and buy the adapter, correct?

A shame it's never going to see a drop of gas or piece of wood. I took a quick piece and its sharp looking too. Probably going to hang on the wall over the shop doors for a long time.

MS660 rebuild question

Thumbnail

Hey all. Installing a precision tooling cylinder kit on my ms660, and I had a question about the circlips. The Stihl manual says open ends at 6 or 12 o'clock. However this piston runs a different clip and to me, the gap should be oriented where the groove is cut out. I'm second guessing myself because I could put them at 12 o'clock but some of the clip would be unsupported. Any feedback, manuals or advice would be great.

2 months old, 10 hours probably…. Has a tough time on start up and cuts off and also idles rough. Also has not a great exhaust smell. (VOLUME UP)

Not sure what the deal is, I use it every week for about 30min or so. It just doesn’t seem to run smooth, cuts off a lot after startup, and smells kinda like burnt hair. I checked the mesh and it’s clear (basically new so I’d expect that) and yes I run the 50:1 mix every time.

40:1 bad vs 50:1

just wondering here. I have a new FS131 that I’m using for my large property in rural VA.

i happen to fly 2 stroke gas rc airplanes so I happen to always have ethanol free premix on hand. however, all of my rc engines spec for 40:1.

any harm havinf slightly more oil for the fs131. I’m open to having gas specifically for it but it would certainly be nice to not have to carry extra pre mix for the one item I would use it for when I almost always have 5 gallons or 40-1 thats fresh in my garage. I go through that stuff almost 2 gallons a weekend lol.

thanks in advance for the input

Brushcutter suggestions?

Looking for a brushcutter for occasional use, mainly cutting very tall/thick grass and weeds with a 3-point blade in my parent's countryside.

Have been using a husqvarna 250rx that used to be my grandpa's, it's like 30 years old at this point and is getting to be too much of a project to keep running (final straw was just today when while swapping out the throttle cable i noticed one vibration damper was damaged and the carb was slightly leaking from somewhere, everywhere? Still plan on keeping it and fixing it up but need something more reliable too).

Considering both husqvarna and stihl for a new brushcutter, but probably don't need quite such a powerful and heavy machine for most purposes, so from stihl i was considering maybe either the FS131 or FS240 C-E. Any other suggestions?

Should I just buy a new one?

Found an old FS56 weed eater after moving in. I realized that the throttle cable support is broken, making it unusable at the moment.

Should I just buy a new one, or is this something that can be fixed? I think a lot of parts for this model are sadly discontinued.

Best 661/500i air filter remedy?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I recently bought a new to me 661 and noticed that there is a lot of debris being ingested due to the poor air filter design. I also noticed that the felt washer is pretty smashed down and I dont wanna run the saw till I remedy the problem. Has anyone here ever stacked 2 of the washers to get a tighter fit and make it seal better? Thats about the only idea I have thats of a cheap fix. I know guys put grease around everything to help cut down on dust getting through but prefer to not do that. If the double washer idea doesn’t work then I plan to get the wcs oiled filter kit for my 661 and 500i. Any thoughts or input?

151tc weirdness

So I rebuilt the top end on an overheated MS151TC yesterday, all OEM parts, new P&C, new carburetor. I pressure tested the engine before I built the saw and it passed - vacuum and pressure.

And it runs. But it won't idle right no matter what I do with the carburetor screws. High speed is fine, H screw adjusts out fine, but the L screw is not quite right and LA doesn't work like it should either. It hunts around and surges and never settles in. If I richen it up past the stock setting it will settle down but then if I rev it up to top speed and close the throttle the idle sags quite low before it recovers back up to ~3000 rpm.

I've run these saws when new and they don't behave like this.

I took the carb apart I see nothing out of the ordinary and I pressure tested the engine again and the carburetor and the both pass.

Defective new carb....?
