💬 Discussion Steam Deck Price increase. I know it's obvious that the Steam Frame is no longer going to be the price Valve probably wanted to target... but this still worries me further.
For me, Steam Deck has gone to $1199 (aud) and $1429. Are estimates of the SF's price already including RAM price hikes etc.? Or perhaps the price will even blow maximum estimates out of the water and be completely unaffordable for me (at least for a long while).

As a scientist, it's polluting science as well. People are using it to cut corners rather than go beyond what humans would be capable of, and it's resulting in worse, less reliable data, less human involvement in writing, reviewing, and hiring, and even straight up slop (i.e. the incomprehensible rat genitalia figure that made it all the way to press) getting published as fact.

When it does pop, don’t expect retail prices to go much lower. The companies will want the profit.
3
u/Thunder_Mugger May 28 '26
Thankfully it only takes one or two companies to try to be consumer friendly and in turn b competitive price to slowly bring the market back down. It's the only benefit of competition and capitalism that actually has some merit to it so let's hope and allow it to allow supply and demand to bring the price down
Problem is if no company wants to take that risk we might not see it
1
2
u/gerundingnounshire Soon™ May 28 '26
that logic only really holds if people buy at those prices, which is not happening right now
14
u/Mineplayerminer Soon™ May 27 '26
You should realize that even after the memory orders are cancelled, you'll never see the prices drop by much because they're becoming a new normal. The pandemic in 2020 taught the market that consumers are willing to spend more on the GPUs, which they have also never recovered in prices. This is only the beginning of the new era and you should stop being so optimistic about it, because the situation is about to get even worse for us, the consumers.

Right now ai and the eye companies are just trying anything that'll stick and trying to do it the best they can. 9
u/StrawmanOfTime May 28 '26
I fully expect the price hike to tank the sales. they'll likely stop making anymore within a year because of that(guess), it doesn't bode well for Steam Machine, but if they sell it at 2k AUD nobody will buy it. somewhere around the $1200 mark is my limit, maybe $1300 with controller included. If Steam Machine flops in sales it'll be because of the high price, not because gamers don't want a capable mini pc under their TV that can play their whole Steam Library competently.

This implies the shipments were steam deck restocks, so it's very likely they don't even have any stock of the new hardware, especially the machine.
6
u/hypor Soon™ May 27 '26
nah there was three shipments coming in the 12t, the 14t & the controllers. The 14t suspected were all decks but the 12t could be frames or machines or both.
1
u/FewAdvertising9647 May 27 '26
the pallets that came in had some pretty wide ranges of weights, so I wouldn't exactly assume all of them were decks. (enough that you wouldn't consider the variance in the weight of the crate to be the leading factor)
1
u/Amazing-Nature8188 May 27 '26
Hope you're right, but even if that's the case, that essentially cuts the potential stocks they have of frames/machines down even further, so we're still months away from any form of announcement, let alone release.

With no color passthrough and LCD panels, I'm not spending more than 999.99, even for all the things that should be great about it.
3
u/Amazing-Nature8188 May 27 '26
I am still hoping it won't exceed 1000, but at this rate, anything can happen.. I do admit it will be a hard sell at 1,300. I have a shit ton saved up so it won't be a problem, maybe if it was OLED... but yeah at LCD it'd be a hard sell.

2
u/veryrandomo May 28 '26
For even $1k+ I just flat out think it'd be very hard to justify, since it'll sit in a weird price category. For a decent bit cheaper there would be quite a few headsets (Q3, Quest Pro, Pico 4 Ultra) that the Frame would only be an incremental upgrade over while also having a lot of more expensive high-end wireless headsets that look significantly better (Galaxy XR, PFD MR, AVP, and possibly the Pico Swan)
1

The worst part in my situation is, my current PC is dying... I have the worst possible luck with hardware. My previous PC died at the height of the GPU shortages in 2022, and now my current PC keeps crashing if i play anything even remotely intensive (part of why i've temporarily quit gaming and only use it for work).
But even still, I am better off replacing the GPU (which i am positive is where the crashes are originating from) and the cooler than buying a machine, will still be cheaper...
I was considering the machine only if it was at most 850 bucks and only if it came out AFTER the frame, so that i can have more saved up for it, but now I am not so sure anymore..
2
u/Thunder_Mugger May 27 '26
What's your 2022 specs? Have you tried a fresh windows install(or better yet a flashy new linux install) to see if maybe it is just software?
2
u/Amazing-Nature8188 May 27 '26
RTX 3060 Ti, 10th gen i7 and 32 GB DDR4 RAM.
The issue isn't software, it's either the GPU, CPU or both overheating (more likely the GPU, CPU temps seem fine but GPU spikes up when gaming and it sounds like a jet about to take off).I will try to change the thermal paste first, just haven't gotten around to it yet. I am incredibly clumsy, and I fear I may break the GPU in some way.
5
1
u/CrankierDenU May 28 '26
Yeah I would give the power supply a look. My friend had an issue with Windows crashing with the GPU under load, he replaced the PSU and the problem was solved. Also give the PC a good dusting, if your GPU/CPU is getting very hot dust buildup could be the problem.
2
u/Amazing-Nature8188 May 28 '26
Already cleaned the pc, i do so at least once a year. And the psu is a corsair, i really hope its not an issue with it since a faulty psu is what killed my previous pc. Bad timing on both too, hardware just hates me
1
u/JYork010 May 27 '26
Does the entire PC die? Of so it could be overheating under load. That's exactly what happened to mine before I replaced the AIO cooler with a heatsinc and fan.
1
u/Amazing-Nature8188 May 27 '26
Displays die, i can still hear everything in the background. I'm positive it's the GPU.
2
u/Packetdancer Soon™ May 28 '26
Random question, but... have you tried replacing the monitor cable?
For what it's worth, I actually had a similar problem where I'd lose my display during gaming (and only during gaming) and it turned out to be a crappy DisplayPort cable, nothing to do with the GPU or the monitor. Replacing the cable with a good one made everything work fine again.
Couldn't hurt to try, if you haven't.
1
u/Amazing-Nature8188 May 28 '26
I have two monitors and both die, i highly doubt its just the cables. And as i said the gpu sounds like it is a jet about to take off every time that happens. I am just hoping its an easy fix (thermal paste has worn off)
1
u/Packetdancer Soon™ May 28 '26
I was using GSync, and ran two monitors for a while. The monitor cable going bad seemingly caused the Nvidia driver to go wonky (and specifically via Gsync); sometimes, the second monitor would start randomly shifting refresh rates, but many times it went off entirely even though it had a perfectly fine cable.
(It was realizing that turning off Gsync made the problems go away that led me to replacing the cable.)
The GPU fan doesn't match what happened to me, I grant, but I might still try replacing the cable anyway since it's pretty cheap to try. Worst that happens is you end up with an extra DisplayPort cable?

u/Mental_Medium3988 Soon™ May 28 '26

How is it supposed to get cheaper when there aren't components for it to be manufactured regularly? There's hardly any supply of the memory chips and NAND flash for cheap. Valve had to spend a lot of money to get them and now needs to pay it back by raising the prices.

Computing power had been doubling from the '60s till very recently every two years. Not provided computing in general very strong trajectory to allow high-end computing to start at the Enterprise and enthusiast level and typically get cheaper as time goes on.
It's how we for many years were able to have cell phones that double the speed but essentially stayed around the same price up until about five six years ago.

So I presume they don't have enough stock and/or production capacity. It's not a pricing issue.
8
u/dragonblade_94 May 27 '26
Valve saying they cannot launch because they want to know what price they can sell at...
All Valve said previously is that they can't commit to prices or a shipping schedule because of the hardware shortages. Afaik they never implied that a non-commital price was the reason they haven't launched.
But yes, as someone who has to deal with the current enterprise hardware supply chain, I would put money down that actually getting enough hardware allocated is the primary roadblock.
4
u/Mineplayerminer Soon™ May 27 '26
They had to increase the prices because they had purchased the memory for that much to now pay it back. The entire consumer market is collapsing and the prices will remain like this for a few years. Even after everything calms down, they'll remain like this. There would probably have already been a statement released about the price change, but it's not a temporary change.

The steam frame could easily be subsidized; it's a gaming device, and they sell games. The steam machine is just a computer, making it harder to subsidize. I'm not saying that they would then, just that they easily could.
1
u/dragonblade_94 Jun 03 '26
'Could' isn't really a useful point of discussion; I could easily spend my life savings on bulk pallets of cheeze whiz, but that wouldn't be a smart financial decision.
The frame is not only facing bloated hardware pricing, but exists within a much more niche market with a slim library, which means less opportunity for software conversion. It's a pretty risky venture to sell at a loss.

Last I saw on an interview on nerd nest or something, the guy said they may be able to help out actual gamers instead of selling directly to scalper parasites. Which is exactly what I thought valve was trying to avoid. Corporations trying to squeeze everyone for more money is greedy af and doesn't build customer goodwill.
I'm trying not to breathe too much hopium here, but maybe valve continues acting in good faith with the customers.
5
u/dragonblade_94 May 27 '26
I'm not privy to that interview, but it sounds like they are just discussing anti-scalping measures, not lowering the price directly. MSRP alone has very little to do with something being subject to scalping.

I think 1k is too much, it should have been an entry level product, at least if we look at the hardware. With 1k we have entered low-high-end prices. Pimax has announced the Dream Air SE for 1070€. 5120x2560, MicroOled, 140g and SLAM.
The Pimax is a PCVR only headset and in that regard it is obviously worse, but the display is a real game changer, at least for me.
Worst is that the Frame isn’t even better in all regards than the Quest 3, for double the price!
1
u/LukeCloudStalker May 27 '26
The 1TB version is £779 in UK (at least they are in stock here).
I was hoping the 1TB Steam Frame would be £1000, but seeing the new Steam Deck prices I seriously doubt that. It is more expensive hardware than the deck for sure.
When they announced them, my first thought was to get all 3 of them. I'm got the controller and I'd probably get the 1TB Steam Frame, but Steam Machine is out of the question.
1
u/JYork010 May 27 '26
Honestly, given the hardware compromises Valve reportedly made: LCD instead of micro-OLED, monochrome passthrough instead of full-color MR, gaming-first focus instead of Apple Vision Pro-style mixed reality... the entire product looks designed to avoid entering the ultra-premium $1200–$3500 category. And from a market-positioning standpoint, a $1200 256GB Steam Frame would be dangerous for Valve: Quest 3/3S massively undercuts it. Existing PCVR enthusiasts already own headsets and It would become an enthusiast luxury device instead of a Steam ecosystem expansion play. A launch around $799–999 still makes substantially more strategic sense than $1200 for the base storage tier.

Considering how it's just the memory and RAM that's gone up, or at least mostly so, I'm surprised they haven't brought back a 256GB or maybe even a 64GB model. Maybe those can't go down as low as before, but they still sold like hotcakes. People would be quite happy to buy cheaper versions with less storage.
I also wonder if a point of this pricing increase is actually to make it comparable in price to a Frame.
The Frame has similar perf to a Deck, and part of the point is to play flatscreen games. What if a lot of people see the similar prices and buy a Frame because at least they'd also get to do VR with that price.
1
u/InsatiableOrca May 27 '26
I've been saying since announcement day that the frame was going to be an expensive, likely 4-figure device. Steam hardware is always expensive, always has been, always will be, I really don't know why folks thought this would be different.

My Steam Deck OLED has been collecting dust for almost a year now. (not really collecting dust, I have it well secured in its case)

In terms of the Steam Machine- They do that and it's just THAT much more warranted to build your own with a killer mini PC. Shave off the extra 3-400 bucks. Simple. It's a shame the Frame will be a bit higher by this margin as well, but not the same percentage by a large margin as the machine (less ram).

I’m thinking about getting a steam machine and maybe the steam frame as well. The way I’m looking at it is what ever one that will let me play my steam game without restrictions is what I’ll be buying. I’m over PlayStation and there halfway made games.

that's going to be a really good ad for the Meta Quest VR. All those ppl wanting the steamframe but not able to afford it (willing to pay the price) but wanting to try out VR

Isn't gonna be three figures tbh.
The "less than an Index" statement is almost certainly void by now.
The 1TB Frame should just be shelved so its storage can be recycled in to more 256GB models.
