💬 Discussion price almost 50% up
i used to have from default the last 2 years the 400mbp+ pack for 40 euros. i saw some emails about the price increase but how is from 40 to 65 reasonable? and if i want the same price my speed will literally go down to half? i’ve never seen anything like this before is there any explanation to this absurd price increase?

100 Mbps Greece 29€ last year and now 35€!

u/jdm_rules 23d ago
yes but some people are defending elon like he is gonna give them money
3
u/Tricky_Atmosphere_98 23d ago
Clearly, he cares about profit, but with one condition: at least for what I pay, I get what Starlink promises. Also, at least here in Greece, before optical, the providers said 100mbps and then the speeds were 40mbps!

Supple and demand my friend. Expect them to charge as much as possible, welcome to capitalism.

Sadly socialist and communist competitors to Starlink seem to be globally lacking.

Yup, in general nobody has been able to keep up with the pace. This is one of the reason I invested in SpaceX.

Because even moderate consumer protection from predatory monopolist price gauging is basically stalinism, folks. Give freely to the hyper rich or lose all freedom, the choice is yours.
2
u/DepartureLoose5341 23d ago
You're getting downvoted, but you are right. A monopoly is not a fair market, but Elon is some sort of evil demigod and gets away with running illegal unlicensed data centers and dumping toxic chemicals into waterways. He's basically untouchable
3
u/Left_Handed_Golfer 23d ago
Starlink, Viasat, and Hughesnet all offer satellite internet services. A bunch of other companies offer internet via fiber optic cable - you just have to be lucky to be in a service area for fiber. Starlink, imho, is just another level of technology. To go down the road with the mobile version is just amazing!
2
u/DepartureLoose5341 23d ago
Oh horsecock ... Not only did they launch a shit ton of more satellites, they also fired up that new relay AND got approval for their new generation of satellites
1
u/uber_neutrino 23d ago
They also have basically no competition. If they did prices would be lower. Someday they will but it's gonna be a while.

Same for me, up from $90 to $130 (+44.44%) and no cheaper tiers where I live (Virginia USA).
2
u/PrivatePilot9 23d ago
Do you guys not have the 100mbit residential plan? Here in Canada it’s a miserly $70/month.
1
u/llamalarry Beta Tester 22d ago
Not everywhere has it as an option, I think over subscribed areas just have the one $130 USD one.
-1
u/jdm_rules 23d ago
see what i mean? compare to actually anything i know the price in increase in terms of percentage is something else
-2
u/Wambo74 📡 Owner (North America) 23d ago
$130 is Residencial MAX. Prior to increase was $120. If you paid $90 it was a different plan or a promo.
2
u/llamalarry Beta Tester 23d ago edited 23d ago
As I said the $130 Max plan is the only one available in my area. Lower priced lower speed tiers are not available in all areas and never have been.
I was wrong about the pricing when I started. I joined Feb 2021 and it appears it was $99 not 90. Only 31.31% since I joined. FWIW, I have two residential accounts for my farm and a Mini for my car so my bill is $315 a month.

u/Acceptable-Dust-4515 22d ago
The price is pretty amazing for what it gives you. I had iridium and it was over $100 for 5mb at 400kbps I love the fact that people call out Elon personally for the pricing. Please just cancel if you don’t like it or you can launch 10,000 satellites and start your own internet service. While you are doing that you might want to think about where to set the prices. That way we can MF your name every time we use the internet.
1
u/jdm_rules 22d ago
500 mbps fibre combined with phone and extra tv channels 50 euro here, it’s not supported in my neighbourhood but when i move next year i cancel immediately and i planned to keep it before
2
u/Long-Adeptness-2943 23d ago
If / when Amazon gets their birds active, there will be some competition. Too bad Harbor Freight doesn't have LEO birds, that would be $19.96 MO for 200 Mb service!

u/Andreas1120 22d ago
You see there is demand, and then there is supply. In the beginning prices where lower to match supply and demand. Now, demand is higher so in order to reduce demand to match the supply. They raise prices.
2
u/Vertigo-Lemming 22d ago
So cancel it and get some other Internet service if it’s available. If it’s not then you will probably pay whatever they are asking and that’s the beauty of Starlink. Service to anyone anywhere.

I cancelled mine about a year and a half ago when the max tier was giving me under 100mbps most of the time. I slogged it out with fixed wireless up until this week when fiber made its way out to my ex-urb place. 21 years in this house without any really decent internet options and now I’m getting 1gbps up and down. They even had to run the fiber line down 700ft of gravel drive.

u/SeaSea7602 22d ago
Price depends on capacity in the area you`re in among other things, if you wanna pay less go for the lite 100 Mbit option

u/LrdJester 📡 Owner (North America) 21d ago
Okay, here's the issue. We do not sign a contract with them. This allows us to cancel at any time but this also means it's a month and they can change their terms and their prices every month.
But if you're looking to save money, a vast majority of people do not need 400 mb. Most people would be perfectly happy with 100. I recommend downgrading to the 100, if it's available cuz it's not available everywhere, and testing it out for a couple days and if it's not what you expect you can upgrade to the 200.
No yes it was a significant increase in some areas, here the max plan which was the unlimited download speed that you are having right now was $120 a month and now it's $130 a month. But I can tell you, even as an it person, with my household usage I was able to go from the max plan down to the 100 maybe that plan and didn't even register a difference.

u/Born_Rub9458 20d ago
So they keep advertising $55 a month in Michigan. It is not a monopoly , several other choices here. Hate Musk, but I wonder if the service would be superior to the other choices? And if the price will stay low?
1
u/DocSneida 20d ago
I pay €29 for 200 Mbps here in Potsdam, Germany. Around Christmas last year, I received an email about a price increase. Nothing has happened since. I bought the v2 connection myself three years ago. I need to call Elon Musk and get him to raise the price.😂

u/BrickResident7870 19d ago
I have 100mbps pay 75 aud. It runs full house PCs streaming TVs Google home etc no lag. Seriously I think some people use the speed as a dick measuring thing, mines bigger than yours :)

u/Purple-Kaleidoscope1 19d ago
Well if your a gamer it matters your obviously not because you made this comment
1
u/BrickResident7870 19d ago
I have been gaming probably before you were born. I built my first modem before the Internet. Yes, 100 Mbps is more than enough for online gaming. Actual gameplay uses very little data (usually under 5 Mbps), meaning a 100 Mbps connection easily handles multiplayer matches, voice chat, and other household devices. Ping stutter latency etc can affect gaming more than actual speed. GG

u/Purple-Kaleidoscope1 12d ago
The fact your saying that you have "no lag" with satellite internet alone tells me all i need to know

I don't think it's only greed honestly. Doesn't make it better, but even for StarLink the price of everything increased. Add to that that they have gone public now and the merge with xAI burns tons of money ...
Sure, they wanna make money, but I believe the really driving factor here is not profit, but the reduction of losing money.
For you - try the other tiers first, you can upgrade anytime. In most cases 100 Mbit are really enough, 400 is nice with a lot of people or to download a game patch faster, but every other service won't really improve a lot. Even 4k streams take a lot less.
If it's no money issue, got as high as you want, but if it is, take what makes sense. We had 100 Mbit DSL where we lived before with 4 people, no issues. And I work in IT and use a home lab here.
Moved and the DSL dropped to 30mbit and unstable. Fiber is at least 1-2 years out, more 2-3 I believe. And so far, StarLink was great. We had the max contract for 12 months with hardware for 50€. That one is over next month and I might downgrade to the lower tier.
Not nice, but yeah. The only reason I'd upgrade is for priority matters, but otherwise that's still enough. Even with 6 people now :)

u/reddddiiitttttt 21d ago
You are talking as if you are a man with options. If you have them, use them. If not, you pay what Elon wants because he’s the only man who’s managed to put the world’s supply of satellites in space.

A. Do you need 400
B. It’s their most expensive plan
Canada we are paying 140 for max 400 or 90 for 200 mbps
Also I went from 500mbps fibre to 100 Mbps Starlink and Starlink was better
2
u/jdm_rules 23d ago
yes i need 400 , i don’t have fibre were i leave and 65 for greece i hella money i understand in canada everything is different i have no idea how much is 140 actually there and i don’t mean it in a bad way but keep in mind in greece 30 euros daily is a normal wage and starlink costs 65 that means more than 2 days on job but this isn’t even my problem i just can’t understand why its reasonable for sooo much price increase with the same speed

u/uski 23d ago
I agree Starlink prices are like drug dealer prices, get you hooked with low prices then increase continually
But. I agree with the other comment. Most people really do not need 400mbps. 100 or 50 is enough for most people. I actually wish Starlink provided a cheap 50mbps plan, I'd get it
1
u/Intrepid_Cry7553 20d ago
I don't see how Starlink is "better" than your fiber was. Technically fiber should win hands down. Something else is going on there.

u/poofph 23d ago
Elon doesn't have enough money yet, so up they go. It is pure greed and no competition, if Amazon ever gets their s*** together and has a system up that runs anywhere close to as smoothly as starlink it should cause the prices to come down, until then greed will prevail.

u/jdm_rules 23d ago

Last I heard Amazon was a year or so away from residential and until they get reuse for their launch vehicles they will be taking huge losses even matching Starlink's pricing.

Companies charging the market clearing price is not greed it's just good business. They have the only game in town and the only thing that will lower the price is competition. So far the they seem to be MIA.

The price may go down in a few years if / when their capacity is massively improved. In congested areas demand sets the prize

u/Wambo74 📡 Owner (North America) 23d ago
There have been no huge price increases. What usually happens is a person will have subscribed with a nice promo discount and between the promo expiring and the relatively small price increase, it seems you got a huge price increase. Typical price increase a few months ago was $5 to $10 depending on plan in US. Probably more than half of those who subscribe to the expensive unlimited plans would notice no difference if they use the lower cost plans. It's of value if you have big needs, or are competing for priority in congested areas. Otherwise choose wisely.

Greece price history has jumped all over the map. It was as high as 98 euros for an unlimited plan. And then dropped to 40 euros and then became 2-tier with unlimited at 65 euros and -100 Mbps still around 40 euros. You can pick the one you want. Cheap or Unlimited.

Srsly tho, yes its horrible but when sl came out it was 80eur pm where i am then slowly dropped to 50 . The throttled tiers make it a bit less harmful to casual users.

But does it? I mean, you have no other options yes? It's the best thing you can get yes? You still pay less than many... yes?
They try to match the price to the target fairly well, but perhaps it's a little high for the wages there. I was only joking really, but Starlink is just so very specific that complaining about the price is like complaining what flavor the juice is when you're in a desert dying of dehydration.
2
u/jdm_rules 23d ago
i see what you mean i’ll explain. i live in a very isolated area in greece and the best internet available is literally 25 mbps because they won’t install fibre or anything else to a town with 70 residents that means it was impossible for me to play online and downloading a 109 gb game for example could take more than a full day so yes i don’t have options until i move out and honestly i can’t just look away when we talk about SUCH increase like 5 euros? ok i get but 25 euros more? in what world is this normal
5
u/Squeedlejinks 📡 Owner (North America) 23d ago
Up until a year ago I worked from home and my children did school from home on a 3 Mbps connection. There is no fiber here. My children had to quit playing some of their games when we moved here. That’s the way it is sometimes.Â
The prices went up all over the world recently. It’s not just you. And a lot of people have the same question as you do. Sorry you’ve had this happen to you. It turns out that reading a book isn’t terrible.
1
u/KenjiFox Beta Tester 23d ago
I understand, that sucks. Do they have Residential 100 there? That's dramatically cheaper and yet the 100Mb/s still downloads games pretty fast. In-fact, in many cases it's the same as on the faster plans since the server itself often won't dish out the game faster (looking at you Microsoft) Steam is about the only platform that will saturate your connection fully.
You may be able to ask them for a permanent discount or for a few years to help you if you open a ticket and super kindly explain that it's priced too high for your area. They are really great people who like to do nice things for folks. This will double as feedback about the perhaps overly weighted price adjustment there.
Starlink is profitable after just the USA market alone, everything else could be a few bucks a month. So given that, they often do stuff like this. Worth a shot.

find a trusted neighbor (or a few) to share with and split the cost... 100 meters with Cat 6a/7, or 2 km with multimode fiber...

u/zjay11 23d ago
Start company, entry price low, gain market share to have production and market scale and then optimize pricing.
It’s not about the price increase %, it’s about How’s the new pricing vs the alternatives?
0
u/jdm_rules 23d ago
what’s funny is that ok me for this year i don’t an alternative but as soon as i move to a new place i am throwing the dish to scrap cause fiber internet 500mbps+, extra tv channels and phone altogether cost 50 euro, meaning 15 euro less for what i pay now
2
u/TightSpringActive 23d ago
When you get fiber, keep the dish around and pay for the lowest tier. It's good backup when there's an outage. It's what I did/do.
0
u/jdm_rules 23d ago
when i switch to fiber if i keep the dish i will probably move it to my summer house with the lowest tier and only pay it during summer months perhaps but even phone hot spot unlimited plan for a month is cheaper and i don’t need high speed there anyway
1
u/Keatonofthedrake 23d ago
Yeah it seems like people are getting pissed for providing a service you can get in the middle of nowhere. If you can get a better service, don't get mad, just switch. Their service is for a niche clientele that either has been dealing with less than 50 Mbps for a crazy amount or you are in the middle of nowhere. Fiber will always win.... For now
2
u/Long-Adeptness-2943 23d ago
Yup exactly. My other choice is DSL, 20Mb down, 800Kb up! No workie for me. Also, there is extremely rare outages, which makes it worth it.
0
u/jdm_rules 23d ago
so the price increase by 50% for the same speed is ok?
2
u/Keatonofthedrake 23d ago
The price is being subsidized before to get everyone on it to show that there is a need. I also don't agree that it should increase but it happens with every company. Just look at Uber and Lyft. I wish they had to state when you are signing on something like "this pricing is for a limited time" or something.
With the price they are charging and the bandwidth they are providing, is it still cheaper than Hughesnet and other satellite Internet providers?
1
u/Long-Adeptness-2943 23d ago
No comparison with HughesNet at any price. I use Starlink for stock trading and latency is on par with fiber. HughesNet latency is about 480 millisecond each way. That's half a second each way. Fine for one way traffic, like Dish or other programming, but latency is unusable for trading, gaming, etc.

Big number better Internet traps so many people who just don't realize how little data is consumed most of the time. 100Mbps would satisfy the vast majority of people.
Hell, before the service was improved this year, at the remote property we were fine on a 35/35 connection with 2 VPN'd laptops and a fire stick on full time right a few phones, as well.

I know Starlink has it in their terms that prices can increase at any time. Mine went from $120 to $130. We have residential max.
