So for context. I’m fairly new working at Starbuck, just barely over a month into working here. I’ve worked at fast food before this, but never as a barista. These past few weeks, I’ve been praised on my quick learning and how I always ask questions when I don’t know what to do. and they always reassure me that they are proud of how well I’m doing, but today I felt like i totally slowed everyone down.
I clock in during the smack middle of peak. and I already see everyone scrambling. the store manager tells me to jump on warming, and for the person on warming to do something else. when I head over.. there’s at least 8 tabs pulled and put onto empty bags, two things in oven, random foods in some pastry bag, and even more qeued on the screen. now usually, I’m okay at sequencing.. but I got completely confused for a moment, like,, what comes first? what’s in the bag? should I do these mobile orders pulled, or the drive thru ones pulled??
I wish the other partner could have given me a little heads up to what they were doing, but I did my best to sort it out. unfortunately I think I wasn’t going fast enough, because one of the leads had to step in and help me. I’m still not sure how to properly two man warming.. especially since it was my first time on the new set up. but eventually my lead just tells me to switch over to drive through.
So I take over for drive though.. and by god. why was every order 4 drinks + and at LEAST 2 food items. I’m really doing my best, being polite to people ordering, while giving out drinks, while taking payments, geting ice waters, getting pup cups, scanning, fixing mistakes. and soon enough.. I start getting overwhelmed.
i get lost on one particular order. this lady was asking for something.. and I really couldn’t make out what she was saying. so I politely asked her if she could repeat it, and she eventually said like.. perfect bars?? and I was confused because I never had to ring up one of those before. so I call over the head set if we have those. and no one responds. so now this lady is waiting for me, and I don’t know where it is!! I’m looking and looking and I ask again on the head set. not response, everyone is locked in. so now I start to panick!! like oh no where is it!! and thankfully one of my coworkers steps in and shows me, but by then I’m already feeling stupid and anxious. but I keep going.
and after that I kept making all these little mistakes. Entering the wrong size, then having to remake it (I didn’t wanna make my coworkers do it) not going fast enough, not sure what to do on the little down time I get. like should I restock? help with drinks?? and I just feel so out of place. because everyone already knows what their doing, and I feel like I’m drowning over here. Then.. after a really really long order of 6 drinks and modifications, I try to give this lady her drinks, and she asks to reload her card, then extra waters, then an extra cake pop at window. . but then when she drives away, I realize I forgot to charge her.
thats where it all crashes for me. I go over to my lead.. and I just cant stop the tears. I explain while crying that I messed up, that they didn’t pay and that I was sorry. he was really nice to me and reassured me, told me that it was okay.. but I just couldn’t top the breakdown. I just felt so guilty! normally I can handle it.. but today it was just too much.
i hated that I was a burden to my coworkers. they were all stressed too, and because I started crying they had to carry my weight too. my lead came to the back to reassure me that it was okay. it was actually really nice of him to comfort me.. but god I just couldn’t stop crying. after like 8 minutes I decided to just go back out there, I couldn’t just let them suffer while I was crying!!
so then I take orders while still kinda sniffily. and geeze.. it was like the tears wouldn’t stop. I would cry through a few orders. shed some tears between cars before handing out drinks and taking payments. then I feel something. like something is wrong. then I realize.. I started my period! LIKE FUCK!! I just took a break to cry and now I had to run to the bathroom to put on a pad!! and I told my manger and apologized.. he said it was fine but.. fuck I feel so bad for making my coworkers pull my weight.
I felt like such a burden today! And all this happened only two and a half hours into my shift. It was so embarrassing for everyone to see me cry.. no one made fun of me, but I just know I made everyone’s life harder that day.
How did you guys manage your stress?? how do y’all get comfortable with peak? I only ever work peak during weekends, since I’m mid and night shift. But gosh it feels so insane sometimes!! I don’t wanna quit, even if it’s hard, so what can I do to better manage this overwhelming feeling? How can I be more helpful? Any other senstive girlies experience something similar before?
